Cutty Posted January 7, 2006 Posted January 7, 2006 Being a movie fan of sorts I would like to know what "unHollywood"-kind pictures you have seen and like the most. As "unHollywood" I would describe a film of low circulation, small publicity, or plain independence in the very premise of it. My favourite "unHollywood" movie at the time being would be "Politiki Kouzina - A Touch Of Spice" (or "Zimt und Koriander" for all german speaking EB'ers). A greek film which follows the life of a greek who was driven out of constantinople in the 60s before the backgorund of the greek culinary world. It's a film of love, drama, politics and unbeatable humour ^^. I recommend this film to anyone above the age of 12. Beware! This movie is a very european example of filmmaking! All you US residents beware of bare breasts and non-action focused storytelling on multiple levels! Quote
Zane Posted January 8, 2006 Posted January 8, 2006 The Holy Grail and Life of Brian were all cheaply made, but that's what makes them funny. The lowest publicitized film I've seen is probably Bionicle Mask of Light.... TT Quote
KimT Posted January 8, 2006 Posted January 8, 2006 I'll recommend Le Pacte Des Loups to everyone. It's a great semi-fantasy movie about the ever fatastic Loup Garou. I think it's kinda like "Sleepy Hollow" just in French and without all the HollyBabble KimT Quote
ApophisV Posted January 8, 2006 Posted January 8, 2006 Great movie that hasn't been made in Hollywood: Le Fabuleux destin d'Am Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted January 8, 2006 Governor Posted January 8, 2006 Hmmmmm... Let me see... Ummm... Star Wars? :D Quote
Jipay Posted January 8, 2006 Posted January 8, 2006 Lol. Glad to see two french movies. The funny thing is that those "low budget" movies were made with the biggest french movie company, but it is still nothing comparred to hollywood. I think my favoryte is "tanguy" which is about a guy who is still living in his parent's house at the age of 30. Those are creating awfull plots to make him leave the house :-D Quote
Evil Willy Posted January 8, 2006 Posted January 8, 2006 I believe all you french people should find Elvis Gratton 1, 2, XXX. Those ARE the most Unhollywood movies you can ever get...Period. They are french(Quebecois) and most of you french guys will hate it! But it is soo funny! Quote
Kikuichimonji Posted January 8, 2006 Posted January 8, 2006 Either Seven Samurai by Kurosawa or Akira. Both are Japanese. Quote
tophdawg Posted January 8, 2006 Posted January 8, 2006 i think the movie Metallica: Some Kind of Monster was good, but i dont know if it was that unhollywood Quote
Lost Viking Posted January 13, 2006 Posted January 13, 2006 Either Seven Samurai by Kurosawa or Akira. Both are Japanese. Akira is sweet! I highly recommend it. Quote
KimT Posted January 14, 2006 Posted January 14, 2006 Either Seven Samurai by Kurosawa or Akira. Both are Japanese. Akira is sweet! I highly recommend it. Ahh - but if You want Akira - then You have to mention Princess Monoke, The Ninja Scrolls and Fist Of The North Star *wub* *wub* KimT Quote

Ahh - but if You want Akira - then You have to mention Princess Monoke, The Ninja Scrolls and Fist Of The North Star *wub* *wub* KimT True, true. Then again, just try to find them on DVD. That's basically impossible unless you order them of the internet. Which requires a creditcard...which I don't have. On a side note, has any of you seen Ghost in the Shell? I liked that one too, it just was pretty weird the first time I saw it. It has a matrix-like story and some pretty nice drawing techniques. I highly recommend it :-D Quote
KimT Posted January 14, 2006 Posted January 14, 2006 I feel sorry for You. I can pick up either (Akira/Ghost In The Shell/Princess Mononoke/Ninja Scrolls) in several stores where I live... - no need to order them on the net :oD KimT I must also say that I find the "new" horror genre from asia great - think about the ring 1+2 / dark waters / the grudge 1+2.... (japanese versions - not the US remakes) Quote
LegoLover Posted January 14, 2006 Posted January 14, 2006 thats a hard one ill have to think about it Quote
The Hordesman Posted January 14, 2006 Posted January 14, 2006 non-hollywood? Cartoons! The Triplets of Belleville A great movie, completely absurd and wierd in every way. The first movie ever with a hungry dog used as a tire... And old ladies fishing frogs with handgrenades & a net too... Anything Miyazaki! Yup! Miyazaki has been in the cartoon business since the 60's, writing the scripts, cartooning himself, directing... Well, he is a workaholic, and his movies keeps an animation frame that even non-anime fans would like, and they are greater than frosties. Akira! I never understood the ending completely, but this is a modern classic, and should be seen. Im not a such big fan of the style, though. Non-cartoons! The Ring, Japanese original (Ringu) I have yet to see the japanese 2nd part, but the first one kicks the american version's butt. Kopps A small swedish commune will soon have no police station... What should the cops do? Crime... This one is extremely funny and silly, it hosts one of the funniest characters ever invented... I believe it is available elsewere in europe too. Stop mentioning Ninja Scroll and Ghost in the Shell! I havent seen them! Stop tempting me! :P Quote
Aredhel Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 A very good not Hollywood made movie is "Barfuss (directed by Til Schweiger); a movie from Germany. Here is the link. Quote
The Hordesman Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 Yu-Gi-Oh the movie lol :D :D :D Lol indeed. Yu-Gi-Oh got nice character design, but that is about it. The entire concept is americanized so I dont see why its put up here. I believe its also financed in the US. Quote
JoeMI6 Posted February 4, 2006 Posted February 4, 2006 Spirited Away, a japanese anime film made by Studio Ghibli, the same company that did Princess Mononoke. It's very underrated. It's one of the best films i saw last year. Oh yeah, and it's made by Miyazaki. Quote

One may think its a kid's movie, but it is a little deeper (and darker) than just that. As said before, Miyazaki rocks. Quote
MattZitron Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 I've seen a few but yesterday in class I watched: La Haine. Extrememly good French film. Which even though it was made in 1995, bears striking similarity to what happened in Paris last year. Quote
