Big Cam Posted July 4, 2011 Posted July 4, 2011 Looking good Sieggy, I am likely taking my bike for a 300 mile ride next weekend to go home and visit my folks. I know 300 miles isn't much, but on a crotch rocket, it's not super comfortable. Quote

Yeah, that's why I got the Versys over the cheaper and faster Ninja 650. A friend of mine recently got a new Yamaha YZF-R1 which, while he loves it, he's not very for joining me on any long trips. I'm in the same boat, I love my R6 and I barely go on long trips so it's normally good, but on long trips, I need to stop every 150 miles or so. Quote
peterab Posted July 5, 2011 Posted July 5, 2011 ...here's one! Love the pose :-) Clearly you're a very hard man who takes himself seriously. Quote
Siegfried Posted August 20, 2011 Posted August 20, 2011 Recently I went to a convention on my Versys (our car died the night before), here it is loaded up... ..here's how it all arrived... ...and here it is after it was fixed. (I was going to bring more.) Quote

Big Cam Posted August 27, 2011 Posted August 27, 2011 I rode my bike to my sisters house for the weekend, 200 miles away. That's a long megablocking trip on an R6. My helmet looks like I lost a yellow paint ball match. Feels good to stretch it's legs, I hit 130 mph just because I was bored and North Dakota isn't called the great plains for nothing, it's flat here, really megablocking flat. Ok, back to drinking Quote
Siegfried Posted September 20, 2011 Posted September 20, 2011 You made a beautiful interactive display putting it all back together on the first morning too :-) Thanks! It was a bit stressful though when the kids started asking if this was meant as a build table! Holy Cow Siegfried!! That's impressive! To be honest I was surprised too how much I managed to carry. That has to be fun...LEGO and Motorcycle! That goes without saying! I rode my bike to my sisters house for the weekend, 200 miles away. That's a long megablocking trip on an R6. Ok, back to drinking Wow, that's fast. I've never gone past 100 mph on mine; that was on a plain too. The furtherest I've been on my bike is 700 miles away, but that's not a racer. Funnily I borrowed a R1 that belongs to a friend of mine... (not me in the photo!) ...but after a quick ride my arms were tired from the posture; long time no racer! On a similar issue, and to cut a long story short(*), I'm mostly riding a TMAX at the moment. Being a 500cc scooter it's odd. The power comes on late, but when it does it's got plenty and it's really smooth. It handles more like a bike too due to the mid engine. Very roomy too! *Slightly longer version Bought for the wife but it's too big. Stupid mistake. To cut my losses I'm getting some use out of it prior to selling it... Quote
Big Cam Posted September 20, 2011 Posted September 20, 2011 That this is gigantic, I'd say sell it sooner than later, the less miles the better. Quote
Siegfried Posted September 20, 2011 Posted September 20, 2011 That this is gigantic, I'd say sell it sooner than later, the less miles the better. Not really; it's second hand and it's already done 30,000 km. A few hundred more wont make much difference. ..but yeah it's big. Quote

Siegfried Posted September 20, 2011 Posted September 20, 2011 Ahh, I thought it was new. For the most part it's in very good condition, but it's still a 2006 model. I tried trading it in to the guys I bought it from last week, but the best they offered me was half what I paid... Thus I'm going to try for a private sale. Want a TMAX? Quote

I can understand people buying small scooters due to the retro European cool factor, but I don't think they're a good technical descision, since they're less stable due to the small wheels, and have a lot of the disadvantages of a pushbike in traffic. Given most are about the same price here as a 250 I cant see why you'd buy one. A 500cc scooter probably combines a lot of that with a much heavier bike. I think a lot of people assume a scooter is easier to ride, but I'd argue they're actually a lot less stable than a 250, both at low speeds and at higher speeds, and therefor more risky. They have less traction on the road too, though since most people don't really go very fast on them that is probably less of an issue. Quote

Yeah, one of the few Euro cool factors I appreciate is this site! I really can't comment much on the handling of the TMAX as I've never ridden a "normal" scooter. This one has 15 inch wheels so it's smaller than most bikes but it's not too small. We'll probably have another scooter in a week or two so I'll be able to comment better then. Given most are about the same price here as a 250 I cant see why you'd buy one. The wife wants an auto. There aren't too many auto motorbikes. She wanted this one as she didn't want to ride a standard euro style scooter, but it does seem that's the smarter bet right now. They have less traction on the road too, though since most people don't really go very fast on them that is probably less of an issue. I've gone pretty fast on this one. It's hilarious overtaking on it; more often than not people don't like a scooter being faster than them and push back! There was one time I overtook a motorcycle at highway speeds, and he immediately sped up and tried to lose me in the traffic. I think it handles very well all things considered. I'm still learning how to handle it, but I can corner fast on it. But I'd rather be on the Versys... Quote

There was one time I overtook a motorcycle at highway speeds, and he immediately sped up and tried to lose me in the traffic. I get that a bit on the 250. I think there's a percentage of car drivers that just don't understand power to weight ratios are going to mean a motorbike will accelerate from the lights faster than most cars. I used to enjoy driving before WRXs were common, since most of the other cars that could catch me were seriously expensive, and most of their drivers valued their cars. Some of the young hoons who do try to catch up are really scary. I can't think of an auto motorbike, though it wouldn't surprise me if the Goldwing had auto as an option. They have reverse gears FFS. They're more like a small 4x4 than a bike... Edited September 23, 2011 by peterab Quote
Stash2Sixx Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 Bad news... A few years back I helped out some family with some issues and ended up accumulating a fair amount of debt. I was actually hoping to have all of that paid off by 2012, but looks like it's not going to happen. The bad part is it's not even mine (deceased family members, many details I'm just not going to go into on the internet, you all understand), but since my name was linked to things, I got dragged along. And since the car is getting to that stage where it's almost time to go and I need to get these bills cleaned up, looks like I am going to have to do what I didn't want to do. I think it's time to sell the bike. Sure, it sucks, but I've been thinking on this for many weeks now. Gotta have a car for Chicagoland year round, a motorcycle just won't cut it. I need to get rid of these bills because I'm just tired of this cloud always following me around. For the last year, I really haven't been able to get out, more like just 'floating along.' So, looks like that's my best option right now. Take whatever I can get and apply it towards these bills to get out of the red. Sure, I'll get another one, just couldn't tell ya when. I just felt like telling you guys so when you see I no longer have the motorcycle tag, you would all know why. Slightly saddened, but actually doing ok with this decision... Stash Quote
Big Cam Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 That sucks Stash. At least your doing the responsible thing, it'll turn out for the best, once your debt is clear you'll have an open door for what you want. We'll just change one of your tags to the motorcycle tag each year until you have nothing but motorcycle tags, as motivation. Quote
Siegfried Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 That's horrid news Stash. But yeah, it is the smart decision. Quote
Big Cam Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 On a happier note, I finally washed my bike after taking it on a 400 mile trip last month, and OMG, I took some pictures, I'll get them loaded right after work. Quote

Big Cam Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 I love how your looking fast on the scooter, but relaxed on the big bike. Classic. Quote
Big Cam Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 As promised some long overdue shots of my bike. the first one it's still wet, then the next few I had dried it off. It's a 2007 with only 6,000 miles on it, that's what I get for living where it snows 8 months out of the year. paying respect with my storm trooper key chain. My flush mount LED side markers that I just love!! Quote
