Known from LEGO-KEI, a Japanese LEGO related website, it is announced that a famous Japanese chain store called MUJI has teamed up with LEGO to offer a rather new concept product, paper x LEGO sets!

Based on observation on the display, I guess the concept is: using a tailor-made puncher to make some holes on some handcraft paper of various shape, and then putting LEGO bricks on the paper to build up some models.

It is announced that there will be 4 sets, each with at least 120 LEGO bricks and a few pieces of paper, for sale in late November. A specialized puncher will also be offered for purchase at the same time.

Further official information from MUJI (in Japanese) can be found here: MUJI

I think it is a rather new and creative concept to make these products, although they are not what traditional LEGO is. Quite interesting actually! :classic:

What, is TLG trying to expand into the arts and crafts market now?

It looks very interesting,it isn`t clasic LEGO but I like it.I just don`t get the purpose of it.

I don't like it. I think it is just a easy and cheap way to create shapes which are hard to build using Lego pieces, like complex curves and zik-zak lines.

Yeah your right it is a really cheap way to get some shapes, but children may find it amusing.Happy to see that there are other EB members from Serbia.

Some people can do some amazing things with paper, I think it's fun that they have incorporated LEGO into their designs

Looks like it might add a whole new dimension to Lego creations.

Making holes in fabric and paper to match studs is awkward. Those will be really helpful.

I was just going to report this! Muji is a really famous brand in Japan, kind of a plain design brand. Their stationary, kitchenware, clothes, etc. all have a clean design and no logos. Actually, my sofa is Muji. So, they are a good brand match with Lego. I expect there to be a lot of plastic sheets involved, and very tasteful, simple color schemes.

The kits are:

Christmas, 120 pc, 8 sheets, 2,300 yen,

basic, 200 pc, 10 sheets, 2,900円

transparent basic, 120pc, 8 sheets, 2,300円

conversation, 18 pc, 7 sheets, 2,900円

Lego block hole punch 1,200円

That last one is pretty interesting, a hole punch that makes Lego size holes :oh:

TLG is really experimenting on other markets lately, that's for sure! And I must admit I kind of like this one, I hope it will be of succes!

Thanks for sharing this with us  .

I don't get it. Couldn't you just push two Lego bricks together against a piece of construction paper and then have it pop out the sides?

Plus, isn't Lego about making things with imagination? With paper, you can make specialized shapes. To do this kind of thing, you just should have basic bricks.

Weird, but interesting, I guess. Will they be available in America?

Very cool idea if I do say so myself. I could have a use for that Lego holepuncher.

I'm really digging this. The hole puncher especially looks good for us people who make custom capes  .

Sounds interesting! Thanks for the news Alywin! :classic:

I can't believe that those "sets" are going to be released in less than one month! They must have worked really hard to keep it a secret until now!

I have a question though: will these sets only be available in Japan?

EDIT: A link (crude) translation of the page from Japanese to English can be found here.

Just replace all of the "[rego]"s with "LEGO".

Actually, I think that you reversed the values of the amount of LEGO bricks and pieces of paper. According to the translation, there are going to only be about 10 LEGO pieces per set, and 100+ sheets of paper. :look:

This is what I think the page says:

Christmas set - 8 LEGO bricks, 120 pieces of paper - 2300 yen

Basic set - 10 LEGO bricks, 200 pieces of paper - 2900 yen

Transparent Basic set - 8 LEGO bricks, 120 pieces of paper - 2300 yen

"Releasing" set - 7 LEGO bricks, 187 pieces of paper - 2900 yen

Hole Puncher - 1200 yen

Pretty expensive if you ask me...

I think you got it all wrong,it says

Christmas set-120 pc(LEGO parts)-8 pieces of paper-2300 yen

The smaller number is for paper and the biger number is for LEGO pieces.

Based on the actual Japanese wordings and as I mentioned in the first post, def (and Gamer) should be correct about the number of bricks (larger quantity) and pieces of paper for those new products.

@ IlikePi : Google often does a very rough and even misleading work in respect of translation. Don't trust it too much.

As people have wrote, my translation was right. I read it, I didn't web translate it  I'm not fluent in Japanese, but I get by.

The fourth one, ohanashi, is vague, since it can be conversation or release (as in 'stop holding hands') in Japanese, and they chose not to use kanji, but I think a 'conversation' set seems more logical than a 'letting go' set.

Anyway, for once I'll get the first review for something. As far as I know, Muji is only Japan and New York City, and I doubt they bought American licensing.

Review pending next week.

Cool, Japan sets. Normally everything here is very expensive and later than other countries. Wish they would bring back the deal with Kabaya. Looks like there's a preview at Midtown, I'll check it out tomorrow.

Seems pretty interresting, nice idea with quite some potential. I wonder what it will be like in practice, so I can't wait to see a review.
