flipguy123 Posted October 24, 2009 Posted October 24, 2009 I've been to Lego.com recently. They have a game for the pirates theme where you have to steal the treasure from the soldiers. That's nice but then it acts like the soldiers are evil and the pirates are the good guys! I tried posting the same thing on the lego message boards but it was rejected and they said, "Don't like it"! The classic sets made all the factions sound neutral. -Josh Quote
David Thomsen Posted October 24, 2009 Posted October 24, 2009 Yeah, I avoid the official Lego message board. I get the impression that half the people there are Lego staff payed to look like cheerful customers. They always end their sentences with exclamation marks. "Yes, I like the new city sets too! The great thing is how they can be combined with other themes! Like yesterday, I bought 7093 Skeletons' Prison Carriage and combined it with my 7635 4WD with Horse Trailer to make a horse trailer drawn by skeleton horses! Do you like the castle range too?" I think they have to assume you're nine years old. Anyway, I think it's universally acknowledged that people always like to play as the 'bad' guys. I've seen dozens of people dressed up as Imperial Storm Troopers, but none as Luke Skywalker. No one ever wants to dress as Luke Skywalker. Maybe they did some customer research, like "Hey kids, would you prefer to play as some PIRATES searching for GOLD, or as some SOLDIERS studying MATHEMATICS for thier NAVIGATIONAL EXAMS?" Quote
Tereglith Posted October 24, 2009 Posted October 24, 2009 Well, I guess that means it's okay for me to root for the baddies of all the non-licensed themes! It means I'm good at heart! Quote
Captain Zuloo Posted October 24, 2009 Posted October 24, 2009 There is a big difference between Eurobricks discussions and LEGO message board discussions, common sense being one of them. Quote
Lt. Col. Thok Posted October 25, 2009 Posted October 25, 2009 "Hey kids, would you prefer to play as some PIRATES searching for GOLD, or as some SOLDIERS studying MATHEMATICS for thier NAVIGATIONAL EXAMS?" LIK OMG ID LUV SOME GOLD TANKS> Cause all nine-year-olds talk like this (BTW, math exams aren't that hard, IMHO) Seriously, the Lego Message Boards are directed towards giving everyone a positive feeling about Lego and are meant to cast their products and their product service in a favourable light, thus stimulating the enjoyment of the toys for the young'uns. Let's just be happy that we don't see too many of these fellas around here. Quote
curtisrlee Posted October 25, 2009 Posted October 25, 2009 I would just try to avoid that stuff if I were you Quote
Emperor Claudius Rome Posted October 25, 2009 Posted October 25, 2009 It's depends on your point of view. On one hand the pirates kidnapped the governors daughter, but on the other hand the imperials are always portrayed as the bad guys in the comics. And on the Lego message boards, they aren't even talking about real Lego, they're just playing those dumb role playing games. I wanted to see if the kids would prefer Romans or Greeks as a replacement for castle, and all is saw was stuff like "Castle Cafe," "Castle role play 3," and "If you were a Castle knight?" Really? Are they serious, they could be playing with real Lego, or at least join a kids role play forum instead. Quote
Admiral M Posted October 25, 2009 Posted October 25, 2009 (edited) And on the Lego message boards, they aren't even talking about real Lego, they're just playing those dumb role playing games. It's pathetic, isn't it. And also, if you check out the MOC gallery, you either come up with jedies, pirates and a couple of stormtroopers and soldiers and a description that reads: "tha pirats ar tryng to gt th soldrs treser! 20 votes to se whoo wins", or you come up with a picture of one of our MOCs under a different name. I've seen Apache's artwork, Zcerberus's port, PTV entries, even my MOCs (really!)... it's really annoying to have 9 year olds post MOCs under their own name and with terrible spelling. I pretty much avoid that forum. In my opinion, I think that the soldiers are the good guys, trying to defend their port town from the ruthless, gold obsessed pirates. One of my Greatest fears is that if Lego.com shuts down for a few days for maintenance, a bunch of 9 year olds will think it's "broken," and they'll migrate to EB, and turn it into something like Rome during it's final days. Except instead of Barbarians plundering villages and killing the men and "having their way" with the women, it will be a bunch of little kids spamming up topics with their bad grammar and bad MoCs! And the pirates life is awesome. I would prefer drinking the days away rather than being shipped to Europe or the west indies just to be shot by a french Canon! Quote

I doubt whether kids realize that Pirates are actually the 'baddies'. I guess the picture that is portrayed of pirates is similar 'Robin Hood': heroic thieves with high moral standards. One of my Greatest fears is that if Lego.com shuts down for a few days for maintenance, a bunch of 9 year olds will think it's "broken," and they'll migrate to EB, and turn it into something like Rome during it's final days. Thats why Administrators are here.. To keep all those evil munch kins away from our fruit loops. On another note.. If your asking whether the Pirates are the good guys/bad guys or imperials... Then I have the answer.. To most kids, Pirates are the good guys, as they almost always let the pirates win in their little battles. Therefore making Pirates the good guys of choice for most kids. The Imperials for kids, are mostly the bad guys. I've got no clue as to why kids choose this, but for the kids.. They are the enemy's! Now.. On the adults side.. Pirates are the bad guys. The same with real life.. You don't just go walking down the road and find a Pirate playing the role as a police officer! No no no no! Most are ruthless pillagers who steal and murder! They would surely get kicked out of the Police academy within a minute! Imperials, The good guys.. You can plainly see why.. They try their best to STOP the pirates.. They are the authority. Now as you can see, It goes mostly any way you want. LEGO don't care if the SHARKS and ALLIGATORS are the bad guys! LEGO wants your money, they could care less about the "good vs bad".. Now I am not saying LEGO only wants your money.. Clone brands want your money.. they could care less about their products.. But I wont go off topic.. LEGO leaves that gap for you. YOU choose the good guys.. YOU choose the bad guys.. Whether you be an adult and like the pirates being the bad/good guys, or a kid wanting the pirates to be the bad/good guys.. Its all up to the buyer to choose what they want and what they do.. I hope I made any sense or if I even understood the question.. If it made sense and I was right on par with the question.. I hope I answered it good enough for everyone to understand.. Could have been simpler.. But I felt like typing.. ~~Ryan~~ Quote

David Thomsen Posted October 26, 2009 Posted October 26, 2009 I actually avoided this forum for a long time because I didn't know what MOC stood for... it's not an easy thing to google. Things like TLC and S@H were kind of self explanatory though. And SNOT and BURPS... I would never have guessed. In my world, there are no bad guys - the pirate AND the soldiers are the protagonists, just on opposing sides. I think this is because I have an equal proportion of soldiers and pirates. If I had half a dozen pirates and a hundred soldiers, I think I'd probably have to set the pirates up as the protagonists. And vice versa. Actually, if they introduced a Trading Company faction, they would probably be the bad guys... exploiting workers and resourses and that sort of thing. Quote
Lockt Posted October 26, 2009 Posted October 26, 2009 During the first wave of Pirates, also a comic book was published (in 1989), and I happen to have it. It is clear that already back then Lego put the Pirates as very sympatathic and funny, while the Soldiers where grumpy old, brainless grunts that only wanted to hang Will (a young Pirate) because he fell in love with the Govenors daughter. http://www.peeron.com/inv/sets/6255-1 Quote
Captain Green Hair Posted October 26, 2009 Posted October 26, 2009 Ofcourse the pirates are the good guys! Or are you going to tell me i'm bad? Quote

domboy Posted October 26, 2009 Posted October 26, 2009 (edited) Well, the theme is "Pirates" not "Soldiers", so obviously the pirates are the primary focus and are the heroes, and the soldiers are mostly there to provide conflict. Kids dream of being a pirate, they don't dream of being the soldier fighting the pirates... well, at least that's how me and my siblings were. On an aside note, look at the Pirates of the Caribbean movies... most of the memorable characters are pirates or in league with them... same idea. That's what I think anyway. Commodore Hornbricker Posted October 26, 2009 Posted October 26, 2009 For a kid the world is as simple as pirates (kids) vs. soldiers (adults). The world is not so simple for adults. I'd join forces with an islander to kill a pirate, then join a pirate to kill a bluecoat, and then join a bluecoat to kill a greencoat and then join a greencoat to get rid of all the blackcoats that super is creating! It more like lots of shades of gray Quote
-Rob Posted October 29, 2009 Posted October 29, 2009 I am a huge fan of lego "British" mind you. I have a army of them, so bring it on pie-rats. Who else out there is with me. We can take them, all of them. Quote

Half a zillion ninjas can't all be wrong! :P lol Shades of gray all around... OTOH, historical pirates you're talking a whole different story. ---------------- Now playing: Jerry Goldsmith - MacArthur - Main Title via FoxyTunes Quote
