Legoliner Pilot Posted October 25, 2009 Posted October 25, 2009 (edited) Hi Eurobricks guys and gals! I was digging a decade or so of pages back in this particular forum and I noticed that there was a "Best and Worse 2008 set" topic, so because 2009 is coming to a close in a few months, I would like you, the Eurobricks members, to choose, in your opinion, the best or worst set of 2009. My 'best' set would have to be the 10199 Winter Toy Shop. It had some excellent structures and a lot of extra trinkets (bench, toys, and the various accessories). The toy shop itself had a good interior too. The worst set in 2009's lineup? Probably the 7642 Garage. I mean the structure is awful, made up of about twenty or so columns. It's even open aired, so it doesn't really look right. Plus, in the bay in which the gargantuan tow truck is supposed to reside has two major problems: 1. The tow truck doesn't fit very well inside, and 2. The floor is not a garage bay-style baseplate with a smooth path. This makes it very hard for the truck to reside in smoothly. The included office is also much too small to be of any use. And to add injury to insult, the office is not open in the BACK, but on the LEFT. Edited October 25, 2009 by Legoliner Pilot Quote
YG-49 Posted October 25, 2009 Posted October 25, 2009 Best: Cave Crusher Worst: Squidman's Pitstop Quote
JCC1004 Posted October 25, 2009 Posted October 25, 2009 (edited) My pick for favorite would have to be 10198 Tantive IV. For the worst, I'm not sure. There are a decent amount of fails. I'll post it once I ponder on it. Edited October 25, 2009 by JCC1004 Quote
RileyC Posted October 25, 2009 Posted October 25, 2009 Best set: Tantive IV, just because I love star wars. Worst set: Hyena Bomber Droid, It looked hideous, and nothing like the real thing Great topic btw! Quote
Dr Kilroy Posted October 25, 2009 Posted October 25, 2009 Best: Medieval Market Village ;) Worst: I don't know, maybe Loot Island? Quote
Lordofdragonss Posted October 25, 2009 Posted October 25, 2009 I chosed just from things I have bought The best: Of course the best set of the year IS The Crystal King! I had many good times with him, eating minifigs. Great monster for every theme! And te worst: Vintage MF Collection series and Battlepack. Lego! How you can do this to us! Quote
Raphy Posted October 25, 2009 Posted October 25, 2009 (edited) Best: - 8124 Ice Rally (Racers) - 5969 P-Squiddy's Escape (Space Police III) - 5973 Hyperspeed Pursuit (Space Police III) - 8957 Mine Mech (Power Miners) - 7738 Coast Guard 4WD and Jet Scooter (City) - 6243 Brickbeard's Bounty (Pirates) Worst: - 8967 Gold Tooth's Getaway (Agents 2.0) - 6241 Loot Island (Pirates) - 7078 King's Battle Chariot (Castle) - 7748 Corporate Alliance Tank Droid (Star Wars: The Clone Wars) - 8039 Venator-Class Attack Cruiser (Star Wars: The Clone Wars) - 8185 Ferrari Truck (Ferarri) I'll have to buy these sets before I can give you my full verdict, though... :P Edited October 25, 2009 by Raphy Quote
David Thomsen Posted October 25, 2009 Posted October 25, 2009 Interesting topic, although I wish everyone would say why they like or dislike particular sets... for example, I don't have Squidman's Pitstop, but it looks pretty good to me. Out of the ones I own... My best: Medieval Market Village. I love 'civilian' sets that aren't part of the main city range, and the buildings in this look so perfect. I like the minifigs, the accessories, the detail... I hope there are more medieval sets like this in the future. Maybe one with... Forestmen? Second best: Fighter Plane Attack, with its beautiful vintage aircraft. My worst: Loot Island. A big chunky island baseplate with hardly any way to build on it, and for some bizarre reason, the instructions have you bury the treasure ABOVE the hold in the ground, even though it seems like it was custom designed for this very purpose. What the huh? Second worst: The Temple of Doom. The trap door gets stuck, the plastic axles on the wheels mean the carts don't roll on their own, and sometimes the minifigs hit their heads on the large bucket and get stuck. Quote
The Cobra Posted October 25, 2009 Posted October 25, 2009 Best: Medieval market village. No need to explain. Worst: Minifigs collections and packs. SW packs for being more expesive each year (and toy shop exclusives, so that htere's no chance for a shopping mall sale), Castle and Pirates packs for high cost and low quality. Vintage minifig collections for being hardly available and overpriced. City minifig collection for it was a wasted chance (if TLC didn't want to put 2 female heads, they should have at least put one female and one neutral!) Plus, most everything from Agents 2.0 and SPIII. Quote
Peppermint_M Posted October 25, 2009 Posted October 25, 2009 (edited) Best Sets of the Year: Pirate Building Set. Rarely has a set given me such scope to build with such simple pieces. Classic Lego that even the grumpy old members can agree is what Lego should be. Plenty to build, a great minifig and its pure fun in a box. Robo Attack This set is awesome. The higlight of Agents 2.0. New civilian torso prints, new faces and a well designed "main feature" that robot oozes B-Movie baddie and fits perfectly into the theme. Worst Sets of the year: Space Speeder While the minifig is great, the set itself feels very "table scrap" and not even a good one at that. The part selection looks like the spares you get from a large set. You could make something better with a similar selection and compared to the quite cool space police K-9 Bot impulse its really bad. Assasin Droid Battlepack No minifigs, a shell of a ship and a high price? I got it as a parts pack to improve my Agents MOCs and I have to say, the dark blue was all that attracted me to this set. If I liked Star Wars a bit more it would be "ok" but still not excellent. The ship is a bit naff but that is a problem the battlepacks have. However the others managed to include a pretty cool model so I don't know what went wrong here. (No, I dont count spindliy droids as minifigs, couldn't we have had a droid battle pack with a bit of variety?). Those are the sets that I chose to cosider this year of the 28 and counting I bought this year, still two months for me to buy more and re-evaluate so I might dip back in later in the year. Derek Posted October 25, 2009 Posted October 25, 2009 (edited) Best- City Camper- A reasonably priced set with great figures and accessories. It was an innovation for City, the theme that always focused on Fire/Police. Indiana Jones Venice Canal Chase- Great set with good parts:piece ratio, and 4 brand new figures. Good playability and just looks great! Indiana Jones Ambush in Cairo- Just a cheap, fun set with nice parts, figures and accessories. Castle Drawbridge- Handsome tower with great figures and a reasonable price. Star Wars Echo Base- Tauntaun. Need I say more? Worst- Very few, I think 2009 was a great year for Lego! SW Hyena Droid Bomber- I'll admit that it was bigger than I expected (That's what she said ) but it was just a weird set that relied on stickers. Did this even appear in the Clone Wars??? SW Home One Mon Calamari Cruiser- This had potential to be a fantastic set, but it was executed poorly. I like the overall playset concept, but over half the pieces (and therefore price) are for the landing platform. It had great figures, but the cons outweigh the pros. It could have been half the price and I would have loved it. IJ Cemetary Battle- I am a big fan of the Indiana Jones line, but as much as I hate to say it, I don't really like this set. The bricks are all basic (which isn't necessarily a bad thing, they were just used poorly) and the set looks awkward. It had potential to be a good set, but unfortunately suffered from bad design. The warrior figures are identical, and Indy and Mutt aren't new. I admit that a new Indy face and Mutt's bike were nice. That's about it Edited October 25, 2009 by darthperson Quote
JCC1004 Posted October 25, 2009 Posted October 25, 2009 Alot of this year's Indy sets are great. They have cool parts and figs. I love Tantive IV because it has a nice outsdie appearance. The Captian Antillies figs is outstanding too. If the Vintange Minifigure Collections, magnet sets, and pre-assembled battle packs count I pick them. Not just because they're lower quality figures but because the minifigs TLG chose to include in them. Those figures weren't the best choice IMO. Thier price was also ridiculously high. Quote
Thee Pirate Posted October 25, 2009 Posted October 25, 2009 Best - Pirates II and SPIII Worst - 852688: LEGO Gold Minifigure Key Chain - It wasa good idea, but come on! Lego could've at least given it chrome gold hands as well. 8967-1 Gold Tooth's getaway - I thought that head would rock on a pirate minifig. Turns out it doesn't. As an added negative the motorcycles look ridiculous. Also, in light of recent news, Brickbeards Bounty no longer holds a special place in my heart. It is undoubtedly the worst designed ship the Pirates line has ever had, but until news of the new Imperial Flagship came out, I was willing to look past that because it was the first Lego Pirate ship in about 300 years. ziljin Posted October 25, 2009 Posted October 25, 2009 Best set: Medieval Market Village. Worst set: I don't know. I like all of them really. But probably one of the smaller sets that you don't get much. of all the sets I bought, I would say Gold Heist is the worst. Frenzy is expected to rob a armored spacecraft with a space scooter with a machine gun that's aimed at the back. That means he can only fire by flying away from the ship. While the ship has like 6 missiles aimed forward. Then again the spacecraft doesn't even have side armor, for the cargo or the pilot. Which begs to wonder, how does he breathe without an oxygen tank? charlieboy Posted October 25, 2009 Posted October 25, 2009 Theres so many great sets i could pick,i think i'll go with 5974,the Galactic Enforcer from splll. Its a big ship with lots of great features and cool looking bad guys, infact all of the splll aliens are pretty smart, tis a shame their ships aren't quite so good. All of the smaller Star Wars sets ive bought this year have been very good,i cant stop buying the clone battle packs each time i go near a shop that sells them! For me the worst kit i can think of off hand is the Star Wars Echo Base kit,£22 for five figures and a handfull of white bricks isnt great, infact its the only sw set that my son and i wont be getting for christmas this year! prateek Posted October 25, 2009 Posted October 25, 2009 Best: Hyperspeed Pursuit Worst: Hyena Droid Bomber Quote
Piranha Posted October 26, 2009 Posted October 26, 2009 (edited) Best: City Corner Worst: Squidman's Pitstop Edited October 26, 2009 by Macoco Quote
CP5670 Posted October 26, 2009 Posted October 26, 2009 Best: 5974 Galactic Enforcer and 8265 Front Loader. Both sets are nearly perfect in my book. 5974 is a little pricey but I think it's the best large Space flagship TLG has ever made. 8265 is quite large and mechanically sophisticated for its price, and a worthy successor to 8459. Worst: Not sure, I don't pay much attention to sets or themes I don't like. The 5980 Squidman's Pitstop and 5971 Gold Heist are pretty bad though, and the 8264 Hauler was also a lousy set for the price. It's a good thing the later Technic sets in the year easily made up for it. Quote
einsteinonthebeach Posted October 26, 2009 Posted October 26, 2009 Good topic! I'm only including sets I own and have built: BEST: -Medieval Market Village: No commentary needed... -Titanium Command Rig: A one trick-pony that works and looks awesome! -Camper: Classic-Town feel plus that awesome female figure -Ambush in Cairo: Excellent parts pack! WORST: -Rock Wrecker: Most deceiving box art ever. Despite how huge the set may look on the box, it is small and barren. -Ferrari Truck: Worst sticker sheet experience ever! Even the figs needed stickers! -Garage: Points were already made in an earlier post -Squidman's Pit Stop: Silly looking set with poorly designed vehicles. Only good for getting most of the alien figs in one set. MLB Quote
Big Cam Posted October 26, 2009 Posted October 26, 2009 Best: Battle of Endor (And I don't even own it yet) Worst: I'm not sure, I don't own them all, so it's hard for me to say. nothing I have bought, that's for sure. Quote
Albero - BEL Posted October 26, 2009 Posted October 26, 2009 BEST: 10193 Medieval Market Village one of the bad ones (maybe worst): 7078: King's Battle Chariot Quote
Cavannus Posted October 28, 2009 Posted October 28, 2009 (edited) BEST: 10193 Medieval Market Villageone of the bad ones (maybe worst): 7078: King's Battle Chariot I agree: The Medieval Market Village has a strong "wow" factor. It looks amazing even when you use to see it at home, with a touch of nostalgia! For the same "wow" factor reason, I may also vote for the 10194 Emerald Night despite some -- minor -- technical issues and the poor integration of the battery (you have to put various grey tiles on it to make the tender look filled with coal, otherwise it look unfinished). The 7078 King's Battle Chariot has an unbalanced design which is not realistic for a battle vehicle. The chariot dooesn't offer any protection; moreover it's too big for a single poor horse and the wheels look ridiculously thin... Edited October 28, 2009 by Cavannus Quote
squidman85 Posted October 28, 2009 Posted October 28, 2009 Power Miners Best:Underground Mining Base, which comes as combo-pack with 8958 and 8959(crystal sweeper is good too) Worst:Rock Wrecker, because of price and design of the back(command rig isn't so good too). Space Police Best:Galactic Enforcer(as police vehicle) and Space Truck(as gand vehicle) Worst:Max security transport(police) and Squidman's Pitstop(gang). Castle(except exclusive 10193) Best:Troll's Fortress Worst:King's Battle Chariot. Pirates Best:Soldier's Fort(but the price is sucks ) Worst:Brickbeard's Bounty. Quote
filip skywalker Posted October 28, 2009 Posted October 28, 2009 Best must be the Tantive IV! It's so detailed and accurate, but also offers a lot of playability. Worst must be Echo base, it's so overpriced for nothing. Quote
