Just a question that's been buzzing around my head for a while. Star Wars fans in general seem to hate Star Trek with a passion, and love to bash the franchise while deflecting any criticism, even constructive, of their beloved saga. However, I've never met a Star Trek fan who hates Star Wars, especially in light of the new film. There's plenty of fans who like Trek more than Wars, to be sure, but rarely out-and-out hate like I've experienced from the other side. I can't figure out any logical reason as to why this conundrum exists. Anyone have thoughts on the subject? I've posted this on a few other boards, and gotten some interesting responses.

You are in fact doing just what you said. Generalizing.

All Star Wars fans don't hate Star Trek, you are just feeding the stereotype which adds fuel to this imaginary fire.

I watched Star Trek for years as a kid and then ten years later I discovered Star Wars, there is still a place in my hear for Star Trek, but the new stuff just isn't as good as the Next Generation was IMO.

It's thoughts like this and discussions started like this that just keep this stereotype going. :hmpf_bad:

I like both, but if I have to choose I will take Trek.

I do not think there are lots of people who hates the opposite franchise so much.

it is just that someone prefer more Wars, or someone else prefer more Trek.

I like both for what they are. Star Trek for the shows and plot. Star Wars for the action and graphics. I like neithers fanbase. Meaning, the "Trekkies" or the Child fanbase of Star Wars.

Star Trek is more of a Adult show, with relationships, that make sense. (Not like how Padame never seems to age. At all during the movies of Star Wars...).

The only reason I think Star Trek fans wouldn't like Star Wars was because of the Expanded Universe and the huge amount of potential for Fan-based comics, artwork, stories e.t.c.

But I don't see why Star Wars fans would hate Star Trek fans when Star Wars has a much bigger fanbase. There have been 726 Star Trek episodes and they are obviously running out of ideas. But there has been 7 movies and few series. Star Wars has much more room and chance to make some Episodes and Series about past wars, e.g. Mandalorian Wars, Great Sith War.

Grew up watching both. Loved the Clone Wars cartoons and the new Star Trek movie.

BTW I was very sad when I first saw the MB Enterprise with Jean-Luc Picard figure. It was soo tempting to get it just for the fig but I resisted. :cry_sad:

I've always liked Star Trek and I still watch the reruns of both movies and TV series when I stumble upon them.

It might even be fair to say that I've spend more hours watching Star Trek than Star Wars

*huh*

Is that even possible for a SW moderator?!

I think I might be one of the few who likes SW, and really hates Star Trek. IMO, it is too Sci-Fi-ish.

I'm a big fan of both. They are very different genres, really, although with the Clone Wars serialisation SW has encroached on ST's territory. However, SW is really a fantasy tale set in space, whilst ST is more of a soap opera (in a good way!) that happens to have a futuristic setting. As Joey Lock says, Trek focusses more on relationships with plot in the background; Wars is the other way round.

The one thing they have in common is beautiful spaceships, and that's the reason I love them both; though I must say I'm not so keen on the CGI stuff in the Next Gen and later Trek series.

Just because I'm a SW fan doesn't mean I hate ST. I know some SW fans hate ST but who's to say that ST fans hate SW? I like the classic ones. The newer ones don't have the charactser and class. :sadnew:

I can believe you. Who wants to watch the same SW movies over and over and over? I don't know if you get the CW series or watch it. There are more ST episodes then SW movies. You can easily spend more time watching ST then SW. There's a lot more to watch then SW.

I like both as well. The Star Wars films are some of my favorite movies, and TNG may be my favorite television series. Although TOS is pretty good too. And Star Trek has made some very good films as well. Star Wars and Star Trek don't have to be mutually exclusive.

I am a Star Wars fan, but I don't hate Star Trek with passion. I don't like Star Trek at all, but I don't really hate it, it's just that I don't find anything in Star Trek to be appealing to me :sceptic:

I like 'em both! I grew up with the old reruns of Star Trek and those movies, along with the OT movies from Star Wars. Other than SW Episode 2, I have enjoyed the Star Trek movies more in the last ten years. And the new one, WOW!

In regards to "too Sci-Fi", I need you to explain that one for me please Jammiedodger?

A small stick which powers up into a compressed, controlled beam of light, with the ability to cut through multiple feet of solid steel? (Space steel for that matter, because it probably isn't the same steel we know) Not trying to sound angry, just trying to back up my thoughts.

They're both good but have one annoying habit of species without subcultures or planets with no biodiversity;

"Quick Luke, let us leave this desert planet of Tatooine to the forest moon of Yavin, moving on to the ice planet Hoth and form there the swamp planet of Dagobah, then to another forest moon, this time one belonging to Endor!"

Man I love topics like this one. From the above sampling of posts, and with the exception of 2, I think a majority of TRUE Star Wars AFOL'ers enjoy the Final Frontier from cockpit of the Millennium Falcon... or the bridge of a Star Destroyer as in my case! The two exception, one embracing the science of Roddenberry, the other not so much... Still, this leaves a clear consensus, in my opinion, that this stereotype is much to do about nothing. The latest installment of Star Trek left me bereft of only one thing... More! My only complaint... being that they should have gone small screen after relaunching the franchise. I stated this first, because I eat, breath, and spout Star Wars metaphors all the live long day. Heck... I am also a die hard Firefly and Battlestar nut... LOTR and Legend of the Seeker.

I think to understand the rift that may appear to be between these two giants of the Galaxy, one needs to acknowledge there greatest differences. Star Trek embraces a "scientific" aspect. Roddenberry sought to expand our personal knowledge, while incorporating his own type of moral motifs. Lucas embraced the legendary, more fanciful aspect, while presenting them in a space opera format. George's newer films focus more heavily on equipment, warfare, and back-story than on the mythos of a bygone Jedi order. Still, a much richer story theme inspired from myths and moralities from the past is presented between those giant letter scrawls. I guess... For me at least, the escape has become the more meaningful muse, as the sciences can only ever be as good as the scientist whom discover them... Some theories die a "vi-o-lent deth", some go on to change our understanding of the cosmos... I happen to be a big proponent of the ion drive technologies NASA and other space agencies are developing for perhaps, one day, leave on our own sojourns towards galactic epics.

I just think in the series they really over do all the technical talk. I don't understand what an inter-steller-romula-drive is! But yeh, the latest movie and the Next Generation series were both good. The ones in between, not so. :hmpf_bad:

Sorry if I offended anyone. :classic:

I do :classic:

I have seen all of them atleast ten times myself. SW movies are ony about two hours long. It'd take you twelve hours to watch them all. ST episodes and movies add up to way over tweleve hours.

Watching Star Trek: Voyager, Initiations, right now on Virgin. Man the Kazons look so funny.

For the same reasons Pepsi fans hate Coca-cola?

Not really, because those are virtually the same whilst, as others may have already established and pointed out strongly, Star Wars and Star Trek are very, very different. Only only main similarity is that they are both Sci-Fi. I don't really believe or want to join in this odd argument. Hating Star Wars buting loving Star Trek or loving Star Wars and hating Star Trek is like saying "I love my computer but despise TV" - they are both under the theme of Sci-Fi, but otherwise they are very different. Of course Star Wars is better visually, but the messages and depth within the story is not as deep as Star Trek.

I know what you mean. I hate it how they can capture a planet without going through all the countries. That Naboo scene where the droids take the planet is okay because they took out the monarch and moved onto the other cities, but others aren't always like that.

I do :classic:

Yes I do too.
