Captain M Posted November 24, 2009 Posted November 24, 2009 (edited) We all knew this was coming, but I didn't know it would come this fast. We've had Bionicle for eight years. It will eventually have to end, even with the fact that Mata Nui has to keel Makuta first. There should be a final showdown. Hopefully, through the creative talents of the Bionicle designers, we will have a fresh and new theme. =] Goodbye Bionicle Edited November 24, 2009 by Captain M
tin7_creations Posted November 24, 2009 Posted November 24, 2009 hmmm. its sad hearing this... i never really cared for bionicles, i've only had about 3, but it's always been a moneymaker for lego... oh well...
Zorro Posted November 24, 2009 Posted November 24, 2009 I'm sad to hear this for the die-hard Bionicle fans...I know how you guys and girls must feel since also the Pirates line will be discontinued next year. But as all good themes tend to do, they will return on some good day! We had to wait for almost 20 years to see LEGO Pirates return to the shelves(not counting the special edition sets), so there is a chanche Bionicle will return as well.
Tereglith Posted November 24, 2009 Posted November 24, 2009 We had to wait for almost 20 years... Way to make us feel better about it I see this as a step forward. The Inika build is getting belabored (although 2008 was a bright spot on that front), I lost the story two years ago, and the prices for canister sets was going through the roof. Hopefully the new line will recapture some of the awesomeness that was felt during the first few years of story, while incorporating the awesomeness that was there in the designs of 2008. Plus, if I give a couple years, my Takanuva with flying machine thing set will probably by all my textbooks for a semester of college

metalandi Posted November 24, 2009 Posted November 24, 2009 I must admit, i'm not really sad about these news. I always considered this theme as "not really lego", so i'm even kinda happy that it's finally gone. Of course i apologize for all people that have liked it.
hewkii9 Posted November 24, 2009 Posted November 24, 2009 The worst thing is that the line is being replaced by Ben 10.
Erebus Posted November 24, 2009 Posted November 24, 2009 I am pretty sure that Greg Farshtey said that BIONICLE is not being replaced by Ben 10. It's getting replaced by another line.
VBBN Posted November 24, 2009 Posted November 24, 2009 The End of Bionicle. I knew this day would come, and I didn't fear it. The fact we are getting more flexible figures in this new line brings me hope. But Lego, I must say one thing. 10 years is a strong standpoint for a line that brought a great story and continuing sets. For something non-lego, you have done well. But to end it with the stars? A true disgrace, and you should be ashamed. After all these years, the best you can bring us is...6 pathetic matoran? I'm sorry, but I won't stand for it. But on another note, I am happy to have such a large collection to hold on to sell later on in the future. :] And to Captain M, you are most certainly right, my 01 Tahu is making me quite happy right now. Glad to have him still.
Commodore Hornbricker Posted November 24, 2009 Posted November 24, 2009 I was never a fan but I did come to appreciate the uniqueness for some of the parts and I have seen some pretty unbelievable MOC's featuring Bionicle. I am sorry for those die hard fans out there.
Xenophilius Studz Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 Me and my brother both new it was ending soon, and he isn't even a real FOL. Wellll, Personally, I don't care much about Bionicle's long-awaited death, but it gives me an empty void. Ever since I started playing with LEGO, several years ago, Bionicle was always in the catalog when I flipped through it. But now, I won't see it very much in the catalog by the end of 2010. *shudders* Same thing will happen with Star Wars, only I feel worse. It makes me wonder, with Bionicle gone next year, and Star Wars the year after, how will LEGO's profits look?
Corvus Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 The sad thing, I think, is that it had to end like this: I was really looking forward to seeing some sort of re-vamped classic sets. But then these came- they are no improvement, since they don't have any better flexibility than the old ones did. To top it off, I never liked that shape of Matoran anyway... and it had to end like this? To be honest, I'm not surprised Bionicle is ending- I think even the kids eventually realized that all the sets were exactly the same, year after year, with some mild differences. I wonder what would have happened if TLC had put more effort into coming out with new torsos and a more significantly different look every year, such as the massive change from the old Mata torsos to the Metru ones.
The Nightwing Reborn Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 This is the biggest upset I've had with lego. If it weren't for Bionicle and it's story, I wouldn't have ever been interested in system. Arrivederci Bionicle, I can only hope for it's return one day... As for this new theme of "flexible" sets, I hope they are better than I imagine and have a connection to Bionicle simmilar to most space themes having a simmilar logo.
WhiteFang Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 WOOHOO!!!PARTY AT MY HOUSE! Don't post something for the sake of posting, ending up not being constructive and meaningful at all which reflects your character very poorly. This is Eurobricks, and I don't value posts of such poor quality with such uneducated response. Consider it as an warning to you. WhiteFang
Brickthing Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 To clarify some details about Bionicle ending: Beginning in summer 2010, The LEGO Group will debut a new, more flexible buildable figure property created by the same people who brought you BIONICLE.The Bionicle building system that many of us love/hate will not be gone, but with the new theme to replace Bionicle, there will hopefully be improvements set-wise. I suspect it will still use the same ball and socket system, have a lack of System parts and most likely still use the Inika/Av-Matoran builds....the BIONICLE story is not ending.BIONICLEstory.com will remain an active site, with new story content...The story isn't ending either, so half of what we love(/hate) will continue for us to follow. At the same time, we are also expanding the category to appeal to a younger audience through an established third-party property, starting in January. This is Ben 10, and is in addition to, not in replacement of the 7-16 buidable action figure range. Also, we still have over half a year left of Bionicle sets to purchase and enjoy, so the line is still far from over. I suspect that BZP will be working on ways to keep Bionicle interesting once the sets finish, and I assure you that EB will have some ways as well.
Princess Muttonchops Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 I doubt many people, in their heart of hearts, will be too surprised by this decision. I'm more surprised that they didn't pull the plug on Bionicle a couple of years ago. Admittedly, I haven't done any research on sales figures etc., but just from my own observations, the Bionicle sets don't seem to move as quickly off the shelves as other Lego themes. Unfortunately, I don't think the move to vehicles helped sales much, as cool-looking as they were/are. For one they are for the most part over-priced. I've witnessed first-hand kids point eagerly at the larger sets (like 8943) and look up at their mums with puppy-dog eyes, only to be hastily herded away from the shelf. (Cue dramatic, over-the-top cry of "noooooooooo!") Oh yes my friends, I've seen the horror, the pain of denial in those children's faces...where was I? Um, something about puppy-dog eyes, and shoes (?)...Anyway, I just hope that Lego maintain some Bionicle-ish theme (and no, I don't count Ben 10 either) (shudders at thought) so they can justify creating/making new innovative pieces. Sorry about getting carried away there, its just the memory of those children (sob) (blows nose)...
Zaktan of the Shadows Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 Well, although it's sad to see the sets go, I'm glad the story will still be around. What suprised me most was that BIONICLE won't technically end. The storyline will continue, and even if the sets are going for now, there is a chance they will return later. Still, I almost shed a tear while reading this. Seriously. Then again, I shouldn't be ashamed - it was my favourite childhood line and I grew up with it. Long live BIONICLE. -ZotS
Siegfried Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 I think it's for the best. Bionicle MOCist will still have new parts coming, but they concept will change. I think they'll probably make some sort of pure robot based theme. I've witnessed first-hand kids point eagerly at the larger sets (like 8943) and look up at their mums with puppy-dog eyes, only to be hastily herded away from the shelf. (Cue dramatic, over-the-top cry of "noooooooooo!") Wasn't that me?
Infomaniac Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 This whole experience reminds me of when they closed down a playground near my house. It was a great little spot with swings, slides and teeter totters, but over the years had begun to break down. When the town announced that they were going to tear it down, people were outraged. The people of my town all wrote letters, and were furious at the town council for destroying the park. This lasted for a few months, until the plans for the new park became public and everyone was shocked. The new park was 10x better than the original, and it fixed some of the problems the old park had. People suddenly were glad that the old park was redone. While the new park was great, people still remembered the fond memories they had of the old park, and what a great foundation it had layed for the new park. Bionicle was a great line, but no one could say it was perfect. I feel like it was never designed for much over 4-5 years. So far every change (for the most part) that Lego has made, results in a better product, and a better company. If Lego thinks that another angle on a "Bionicle type" theme is better, than I think it will be a positive change. I think that all of us AFOLs should support Lego in this time, instead of picking at old wounds. Bionicle will always have a special place in my heart and my childhood, but I'm ready to see what comes next. Infomaniac
CommanderFox Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 I knew this would come eventually... I have never been a huge fan of Bionical, but to hear all of you fans sad, makes me feel really sorry for you. It makes me more sad to realise this is what it's going to be like when the SW license ends. The new flexible sets coming out next year hopefully will be good, so all you Bionicle fans and MOCers will have something good to work with. CommanderFox
WhiteFang Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 Let me add a few words into this grim picture, for the Bionicle collectors. Although I have never owned a Bionicle set in my entire life, but I have seen how children excited over Bionicle characters and storyline altogether. It's a pity that this line has eventually met its end but that doesn't mean it cease from existence. Instead, I believe Bionicle fans will stay together and continue advocating the love of their theme. Take a look around. There are also many other System Themes sets that had ran out of production after a year or two but did the collectors ever give up building? Our Classic Pirates in EB is one prime example. Bionicle has definitely stuck deeply for many children around the globe. With this, I hope Bionicle collectors will continue to look forward to see what TLG is offering in the near future, continuing innovating and providing good quality playability for past Bionicle collectors.
