Aliencat Posted November 5, 2009 Posted November 5, 2009 This is an entry for Classic-Castle.com's Colossal Castle Contest, in the Brick Castle category. The idea for this category was to build a castle that's (partially) built up out of clay-fired bricks, rather than stone. So this is my first attempt at a red castle, and I'm pretty happy with how it came out, even though that's a revolting colour to build castles with in my opinion ;) but hey that's the challenge of this category. I had to keep it relatively small (48x48) because I don't really have that many red bricks (who builds red castles anyway ;)). View more photos on MOCpages. Quote
Sir Dillon Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 Wow, that was quite quick! The speed alone with which you built this is intimidating. I agree that the red is an unattractive colour for castles, but even so this is very a nice build. The way you framed the brick sections is well done, I like the angled shape, and you've got some cool architectural details throughout. Quote
I Scream Clone Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 I like what you have built Aliencat. The use of the angles as always adds so much depth to the structure. I agree that the red is a tricky proposition, but with the use of the dark red and brown bricks for wear and tear, you have lifted the whole castle nicely enough. It is always a shock at first to see the red, but it mellows quickly. The use of the 1 x 2 technic bricks on top of the walls looks great. Hopefully I will get some time to take a crack at a category or two. Good luck. Quote
Rick Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 I really like the way the color scheme turned out. And good that you continue your 'signature': building in all sorts of non-standard angles: it really adds realism. I don't really like the sand-blue (or what's that color called?) minifig heads being used as ornaments on the roof. Quote
Etzel Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 Very good job, Aliencat! Interesting angles and I like the "courtyard" on top of the curved wall section. I was reading about this contest yesterday and I think this category is really interesting. There is so many castles that were built with clay-fired bricks instead of stone but hardly anyone builds them in LEGO. The problem is of course the colour with red being too bright, brown being too brown, dark red being too rare, etc. None of the existing colours are perfect but I think you have made a great work with this castle anyway. The mix of colours really makes the building more realistic. Good luck in the contest! Quote
Batbrick Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 Fantastic job AlienCat as always, I love the way you've done the red colour for the Castle, it gives it a slightly sinister quality that I love, whether or not this was intentional. The little details are great, I especially like the curved wall section and how you've positioned the figs on it. I wish you the best of luck in the competition! Batbrick Away! Quote
kabel Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 i really like this castle, especially the back side is really nice, and all the nice techniques, however, it looks more like a rennaissance oder even baroque castle rather than an mediaevel one, that doesn't take away its beauty though Quote
Milan Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 Excellent build, man! Angled section is awesome. I like partial red section. Very nice! Quote
Big Cam Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 Thats very cool, It reminds me of the Castle deep in the Lord of the Rings movie, with the wall and the entrance to the right where they keep knockin off the Orc's THe red does seem a bit bright but the overall design I like alot! Quote
BlueBard Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 Always an inspirating pleasure to see one of your MOCs and your amazing building techniques Quote
ziljin Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 does the drawbridge pull back? any interior details? overall its great. although the round tower and the roofing reminds me of Valenpeak. Quote
Commander Laquiet Posted November 7, 2009 Posted November 7, 2009 Great work! This is a fantastic castle, and to include the amount of detail you have on a 48x48 base shows great skills! I really like the villagers making their way up to the castle - they add a lot. Wonderful! Quote
