Giantorange Posted June 18, 2015 Posted June 18, 2015 I am hugely torn between a collector and a builder. I spend half my time in a strange OCD fear that I will need parts to build a set from an old collection that are in a diorama. To appease this I came up with the solution that all minifigs that belong in sets are left handed. All others are right handed, this lets me see at a glance which ones are "allowed" to be dismantled or rebuilt. Quote
fred67 Posted June 18, 2015 Posted June 18, 2015 How do you see at a glance what handed a minifigure is? That's an interesting skill. I have a quite a few figures on display; I hesitate the post the picture again, because it's in at least two other threads related to minifigure displays, but what I've done, at least with CMF is that I get a complete set for display, a complete set for posterity, and then the ones I think may be useful in MOCs (or even as additions to other themes). They are all separate - the ones on display are on display, the ones saved are in boxes, the ones I want to use are in sterilite drawers. On top of CMF I'm building a collection of Superheroes, but generally buying them separately or in sets specifically for a Superhero display, so I don't need to keep the set together. If you follow the link above, you'll see the Superhero display - it's currently lacking; I've been putting 32 figures in each display case (exactly two series); the superheroes, though, have more than that and a bunch of ones sitting on the outside that will not fit... including a Groot, which will make another display a lot more difficult. You can also see in that picture the Simpsons as a separate display - it's only the first Simpsons, I will put them in a larger display with the second series when I get a chance. Quote
jinxjinx550 Posted June 19, 2015 Posted June 19, 2015 I love this topic. Fun collection, and really nicely displayed! Quote
Blondie-Wan Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 Yup, Blondie-Wan has it right. They are the official Lego branded containers by Iris. I bought them off Amazon a few years ago when they were heavily discounted. I got them for something like $27-35 apiece when MSRP was 60? Unfortunately it doesn't look like Iris is producing the "official Lego" ones anymore, and the aftermarket prices have sky rocketed. The $10 cases are $20+ now and the drawers are $120+.. more than double MSRP. Of course you can get the same styled ones without the Lego branding for around MSRP still. Here are a couple of updated shots since a few months ago. I didn't bother taking pictures if little or nothing changed, like with the Uruk-hai: The increased number of Gundabad Orcs with Lake-town Orc Hunters: Mordor Orcs and Hunters with the 20 more (still waiting on 12 more from an order): All the main bad guys, left over Moria Orcs and goblins that didn't fit on the other base plates, and new twilight Nazgul (still need to pick up one more Witch King Battle set to have an even 9): Nazgul and wargs with a few more gray wargs added to the ranks: All the Lake-town Guards and elf soldiers. I have the Elrond's bald because I need to buy some helmets for them to make them into the prologue elves: And since someone asked, here are my Cave Trolls and Goblin Kings: I also have a bin with all the exclusive polybags and promos I will have to pull out and photograph later. I think they stopped making the LEGO-branded ones for a while, and recently started again. A couple weeks ago I was in a local Walmart - the same store in which, a few months ago, I bought the last of these cases I'd seen anywhere (and where they were on clearance) - and they had a whole new endcap of them that they didn't have before, back up to full price, and most tellingly, they appeared to have the same bright green baseplates that have replaced the old "regular" green ones. They had over 70 of them. I just posted about this elsewhere, but because it's relevant to this tangent in this thread I'll go ahead and mention it here, too: I just went ahead and picked up a couple of those cases. They're $9.97, and include a baseplate as before - which makes the cases a better deal than they used to be, since TLG recently upped the price of 32 x 32 baseplates from $4.99 to $7.99 (in addition to changing the color selection). Most interestingly, the baseplates in these turn out to still be the "old" green (that is, not the bright green that TLG now offers its large green baseplates in on their own). I think I'll have to get more of these cases - not just for storage, but now also for large baseplates in "regular" green that I can no longer get on their own from TLG. Quote
Robert8 Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 Very impressive collection! Especially Fantasy Era and Adventurers! Quote
1980-Something-Space-Guy Posted March 30, 2021 Posted March 30, 2021 (edited) Somehow I never found this thread, even though I am a huge minifig fan and love looking at other people's collections. An interesting aspect of this thread was looking at people's minifigures from different themes (as opposed to the threads in the Super Hero and Historical forums, which show collections specific to those themes). A "collection of collections", if you will! It would certainly be amazing to see what these "collections of collections" can look like today with the amount of themes and unique minifigs that exist (around 13K last time I checked). Personally, I really liked @gladiator's collection. It was particularly impressive and had many desirable figures from the time. What would an equivalent collection look like today, after we have gotten so many new licensed themes? I'd love to see some pictures, if any of our grand collectors feels like sharing!
