Milan Posted November 19, 2009 Posted November 19, 2009 (edited) Does anybody go to a gym around here? I am going now, as well as for the last 5 years. Basically I was very! skinny, and for that period I managed to get 32 kg with proper nutrition and working out. Much better than before! I was 175 cm and 63kg, now I am 180 and 95 kg (not fat), with developed muscles. Now it is not more a painful chore, but a pleasant lifestyle, and I really enjoy working out. Also, I am voluntary adviser for newbies in Gym regarding nutrition and Basic workout plan. What about you? Edited November 19, 2009 by Milan Quote
The Penguin Posted November 19, 2009 Posted November 19, 2009 Well, I've never been skinny, but not fat as well. I bought a treadmill some time ago, so I spend about 30-60 minutes running every day, and I started losing weight (fat) quite fast! ) Plus, I feel much better now. ) I usually turn on some nice music, and march forward! ) Good day, ladies and gentlemen! ) Quote
MetroiD Posted November 19, 2009 Posted November 19, 2009 (edited) Hey Milan :] You got a nice thread running here! I used to hit the gym a lot a few years ago, really enjoyed it! I'd never had real weight-related problems even tho I was chubby as a kid but I lost a lot of weight in my late teen years and after that I guess I worked my extra fatty into some muscle - but then again, muscles weigh much more than regular fat anyway I must admit I haven't really been working out seriously (actually, not worked out at all!) throughout these last 2 years though, which is a shame. Back when I was serious about it, I was progressing well despite not being able to keep a good diet (could only squeeze one/ max two meals per day in between university and work)... I've recently picked up hockey once again tho and I'm thinking of visiting the gym once again in order to shape up properly. The only real problem I find is that training on your own is bloody boring most of the times - used to have a mate back in the ol' days whom we trained together with. Nowadays everyone seems to be a "fitness fan" but no one is actually going to the gym!! Oh well, at least I've got a pair of perfectly fine dumbbells at home and you can pretty much do anything (except pull-ups) with those... especially when you haven't been training regularly in years. So I guess I'd better stop complaining and start working out @ home before I consider the gym again. P.S.: As to measurements, I guess I lost trace of mine while moving around Europe but I must now weigh ~82 kilos @ 1.82 m which is more or less OK, apart from the fact that there's not much muscle anymore in those 82+ kgs... :/ Good news is, I've still got that Manowar Discography, it's the best thing when working out - motivates like hell P.P.S.: Much like the Penguin here, I'd replaced the gym with jogging during the last few months though... Have a nice garden and a stadium nearby where I live so I used to go running for about an hour to keep me from getting a six-bag rather than a six-pack. Never been a real fan of jogging though, I totally prefer weight training, although it's a fact that they work best when combined (cardio + weights). Edited November 19, 2009 by TheOtters Quote

prateek Posted November 19, 2009 Posted November 19, 2009 I should really start going to the gym to work out. I'm 6' and only 125 lbs. that's really skinny. Quote
AwesomeStar Posted November 19, 2009 Posted November 19, 2009 Eurgh. Exercise?! How DARE you?! Heh, well, I went to one a few times - never really got into it that much, I'm afraid. Building Lego is much cooler than getting all sweaty ~A.S. Quote
The Who Posted November 19, 2009 Posted November 19, 2009 Well, I don't technically go to a gym, but being in High School, I have to go to gym as one of my classes. I don't know if it counts, but it deffinitely helps. At the beginning of this school year, I weighed 148 pounds and had a body fat percentage of 22%. Our coaches said the average for our age is 28%. Now, I weigh 152 pounds and my body fat percentage is only 16.5%, and I am noticably stronger. I guess it goes to say that muscle honestly weighs more than fat. Quote
Jebediahs Posted November 20, 2009 Posted November 20, 2009 Why go to the gym when you can simply swap your torso? == > nyuk! nyuk! nyuk! ORC! Quote
posades Posted November 20, 2009 Posted November 20, 2009 Yep, I go to my univsersity's gym 3 times a weeks; I've been cutting down/skipping a lot lately though do to my hectic schedule this semester (seems like something is due everyday of the week). When I have more free time I usually try to go Monday through Friday and rest on the weekends. I was pretty skinny in high school as well; I played soccer, so we mainly just focused on the lower body and cardio back then. When I went to college I decided to try and beef up a little. I've gained about 15 pounds (~7 kg) in my almost four years of working out here, but I only recently started getting serious these past couple years. I'm not huge by any stretch of the imagination, but I do like the way I look more now then back then when I was a twig from the waist up. Working out for me is kind of soothing in a weird way, it relieves a lot of stress and for some reason I just like that feeling of being sore the next day; you have tangible results and when you move up in weight a little it makes you feel like you've accomplished something. Milan Posted November 22, 2009 Author Posted November 22, 2009 Great that there are some other people in fitness! I want to show my private Gym, which was built out of the old basement! Ok, I live in a very old, on a 3rd floor, building. I had a home Gym in my room, but it was very crowded. So I decided to use my old basement which was tottalyy full with all kind of old waste! 3 days of cleaning, concreting floors, covering walls, painting and bringing my equipment turned this (note that this is already cleaned, the basement in the start was in terrible condition, I could barely make one step in!) : to this: Equipment is Pull up machine, with dips bar, and part for a stomach exercise. Bench, with 4 possible angles, and a part for exercising two mayor legs muscle groups. Then there are this which gives me great range of free form exercises, main part of my training is by using these! I am using this Gym for about 1 year and I am really happy with it! It was very low cost, and I can say I have private Gym which is a rarity here! Quote
MetroiD Posted November 22, 2009 Posted November 22, 2009 I want to show my private Gym, which was built out of the old basement! This gives me a wonderful idea... If only my basement were a big bigger! Love what you've done with the place there!!! Quote

I don't go to the gym because #1 there are no gym things near my house #2 I lack transportation to get there #3 I'm lazy and don't want to. Quote
Lego_Warlord_8 Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 What's gym? Is it some place people go to exercise? Yes, well I don't go to a gym. What have people been doing for the last 1,000 years? Push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups, V-ups, supermans, the list goes on for ever! That my gym, these are my past times. (Besides Lego of course) All I need is some time and space. And plus, there's no membership fees involved... ~LW-8~ Quote
The Penguin Posted November 26, 2009 Posted November 26, 2009 (edited) Hm, by the way, gentlemen, does anybody here happen to know a good diet or a course of exercises to remove some belly and chin fat? And those exercises are great, but sometimes you need a little more resistance; you'll certainly be strong doing only what you mentioned, but the physical appearance may not be what you were hoping for. Running and push-ups do help, but perhaps there's something else I should do? ) Running is the best way to burn excess calories. Although I personally would recommend a more "explosive" form of cardio - such as for example, some kind of team sport... Combine that with a proper diet that's low on carbs (i.e. MUCH less sugar products, bread, potatoes, etc.) and you'll be on the right track. Quote
Thee Pirate Posted November 28, 2009 Posted November 28, 2009 Yeah, I work out. 2 hours a day, 4 days a week. I switch up muscle groups a lot. Chest, tris and abs/back, bis and abs/legs and abs/cardio or chest and back/bis and tris/legs and abs/cardio and abs I do 5 sets for each work out and at least 4 workouts for each muscle group. My first and last sets are a warmp up and a cool down set. Quote
Milan Posted November 28, 2009 Author Posted November 28, 2009 (edited) Thee Pirate, do you exercise the same muscle group more than once per week? Example of "one muscle group per week" routine. Of course, diet should be in first place, then workout, then sleep! Monday: chest/ front shoulders Tuesday: off Wednesday: back/ side and back shoulders Thursday: off Friday: legs Saturday: biceps/triceps Sunday: off The Penguin: As the otters said, increase burning calories, and decrease calories intake...it all depends...what do you want: just to lower body fat level? To get more muscle? Or just simply to get rid of the belly? I can make you a diet plan, I just need to know your activities, weight, height, age and your diet now. The Crazy One Posted November 29, 2009 Posted November 29, 2009 I'm in the gym every day, but that's as my girl friend has one. I do 2 hours always on Tuesday and Thursday, but any other day, it's nothing to special, sometimes I just go in and walk out, so I feel like I have atleast been to it. I started that at 15, when I was......er.....not the fittest boy in the world.... Quote
Brickmaster Posted November 30, 2009 Posted November 30, 2009 I need to gain weight,; more lean muscle than anything. My weight lifting to actual weight ratio is quite high for all the lifts I do, yet I cant seem to gain much bulk. All weight gaining advice I hear always runs down to simply eating more. Whether it be carbs or protein, just eat more. And I do try, wholeheartedly, yet I can't seem to gain a pound. Even when my strength increases. I know some prescription drugs have side effects of increased appetite, but for the most part I am uninterested in that. Usually I am the one giving people weightlifting and strength building tips, but my rut has always been weight gain, and I can't seem to get out of it. Any personal tips, from anyone? Quote
Milan Posted November 30, 2009 Author Posted November 30, 2009 Brickmaster: First, you are in that age when it is very hard to gain any weight, not to mention muscles, your testosterone level is high, but also your metabolism speed is very high... You can do few things: Eating more than 3 times per day, optimal is 5-6 times per day, that will also keep your metabolism speedy, but you need constant nutritions. Exercise, i take that you know how to, based on your post, Carbs/Protein are your best friends, approx in 70/30 ratio Drugs wont help you, because you don't need more appetite, but a way to keep that food, but your metabolism is so fast that food simply runs through you... Did you take protein powders (supplements) or just food based proteins? What is your height and weight? When I get home, I can write my experience with the same problem in the age of 19. It may help you. Quote
MetroiD Posted November 30, 2009 Posted November 30, 2009 Carbs/Protein are your best friends, approx in 70/30 ratioDrugs wont help you, because you don't need more appetite, but a way to keep that food, but your metabolism is so fast that food simply runs through you... Did you take protein powders (supplements) or just food based proteins? Absolutely. My experience with regular weight training shows that no other chemicals are good apart from proteins. Forget about weight gainers, that will only mess up your system and turn your liver into a mess. When I used to train hard, I didn't have enough time to eat 5 or 6 times a day - or sleep as much as I should have. So instead I had a protein milk shake ready every morning - and when I came back home to grab my gym stuff and go training, I chugged that thing down (even though I hated its chemically/sugary taste). Give it half an hour / an hour and start training, your body will by then have "consumed" the protein. That is very useful when you can't eat properly for one reason or another. It is also a good supplement to any diet, as long as you don't overdose on proteins - which has a fairly low chance of happening anyway. It could also help your body with its food rations and assist you in building up your weight. However, if you're not slim, it can also have a negative impact - after a few months of training with proteins, I gained in every department, but my hip size had also increased. Which is why I heartily recommend Milan's solution - first try dividing your food into portions so that you eat 5 or 6 times a day. That's the best way to actually teach your system how to "analyze" your diet and make the most out of it. On a sidenote - Milan, come over to Sofia bro, it's not too far off and besides I need a fitness buddy / instructor Quote

I wish I could get a personal trainer. I'm 5'10" 150-160 pounds. Always been skinny. I also have chronic fatigue syndrome and Fibromyalgia. Which has me with muscle pains and fatigued often. If I went to the gym it would help me get energy and build muscle so that my muscles are stronger and hurt less. But I don't know what to do. When I was younger I once tried working out a little and I did gain some energy but my weight stayed the same. I don't want to build fat or mass, would like to build some muscle. I tried taking weight gainer but it never worked. I just don't know enough about health and working out. I was thinking of getting a nutritional as I think my health insurance covers it. Quote
