Castle Sets 2010

I like the great helm. I intend on purchasing many Kingdom sets. The great helms are a plus. This will be my first chance to collect a Castle theme in its entirety. I was a fan of lego as a child, but only got back recently right when most of the Fantasy Era sets were no longer available. But I got around 20 dwarves and 30 trolls so I should be good with that if never never release fantasy sets again. Now I get to mass collect human minifigs.

excuse me, i noticed a lot of people write "helm"..if you mean with that the thing knights wear on their head, then it's a HELMET, helm means something completely different :P

The word "helm" has multiple meanings, but saying "great helm" to describe this helmet is actually correct: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/helm (second definition)

My only wish is that they put two eye slits in the great helms and made them so that you can put horns on them like the Teutonic Knights had.

I wouldn't want that. Horns in the helmets could look cool, but whenever you didn't have horns there would be ugly holes in the sides of the helmets.

Waste of money. You would probabley do better glueing horns to the helmets. I highly doubt another version would be realeased.

I would be ecstatic if they just put in the great helm for the Lion Knights.

I really do hope that these pics will change as this month passes b/c

otherwise, it'd be pretty sad trying to collect those great helms for

the Lion Knights T.T !!! Of course, pretty difficult as well and very pricey.

Well I go away for a while and find all this when I get back, I'm quite impressed though it does all feel a tad formulaic. I'm not to sure about the headgear but I'll reserve judgment on that until I get to have it in my hands.

I'm really looking forward to the advent calendar, I wasn't to impressed with the pirate one but this one looks like something I'll be getting a few of.

Good point. But I didn't know the Teutonic Knights did the horn thing...doesn't seem that that'd be allowed in the "warrior-monk code of conduct"

I don't know how accurate it is, but many illustrations depict Teutonic knights with wings or horns on their helmets. For example:

What I wish they would do is make a piece that has horns and that could just stick on top of the great helm and thereby eliminate any possible ugly holes on the sides. I would really like to have some teutonic knights. Maby brickforge will make some horned great helms after a while.

Yes, that's a good point, but the family coat of arms on the shield and as a medieval T-shirt over their armor also helped distinguish them, among other things like their horse, which also might have the coat of arms. By the way thanks for the pics Sir Dillon, those look more like "good guy" horns, or wings would be "permitted" as well.

Actually I don't think it was especially typical for teutonic knights to wear wings or horns. It should be the same for knights from other countries. Only rich knights were able to afford a horse and expensive weapons including impressive crests probably. And normally, they were worn only for tournaments. To get an impression, you might want to have a look at the illustrations included in the Codex Manesse which dates back to about 1300 (see http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Codex_Manesse ).

And concerning the new helmet, this type was common since about 1250. Because of the introduction of the stirrup it was now possible to use longer and heavier lances in the way we know from jousting. But in contrast to tournaments, you aimed on the head. Therefore it was important to improve the protection of the head. It was common to wear a so-called cervelière ("Hirnhaube") and later on the bascinet ("Beckenhaube") below the great helm (the cervelière was a close-fitting cap of metal around the head). The great helms were quite heavy, you had a limited field of view and it was not that easy to breathe. That's why knights did not even wear the great helm all the time during battles.

Awesome! More blurry pics! *Sigh,* the Dragon Knights still need a leader. I'm sure that TLC will expand on that around Christmas though.

A shame really that there are so few Dragons in the line.....

EDIT: According to my calculations it's 8 Dragon Knights vs 12 Lion Knights (without the maid).
