WesternOutlaw Posted November 30, 2009 Posted November 30, 2009 I'd like to revisit a Wild West sub-theme that I started a few years ago by sharing this new creation as the first building of Old Mexico. Inspired by a number of Western movies, most notably the 1960s classic, Magnificent Seven, this is my version of a Spanish Mission seen is a number of gunfights. While it's not exactly a perfect LEGO rendition, I have modified it to suit my liking and limited piece collection. There is a large red roof behind the tower and front gable that lifts off to reveal the interior. The second floor of the tower also lifts off for added playability. I did take the image as well as a few others at night so the pictures could have certainly come out better. I'll share a few day-light shots tomorrow. Please note: this is the first building that will be part of a larger Mexican Village. Quote
lightningtiger Posted November 30, 2009 Posted November 30, 2009 'The Brickster' you are a genius with the western MOC builds. This is the good, minus the bad or the ugly ! Quote
Rick Posted November 30, 2009 Posted November 30, 2009 Looking good again. Start of a new series? Quote
brickzone Posted November 30, 2009 Posted November 30, 2009 This is a nice cute MOC that really looks the part. Not quite sure that the scale of the large doors quite matches the rest of the model, but the overall effect is still good. Is that dark red roof or just the lighting? I think white and tan looks quite well for these kind of buildings - it's more subdued than the old Pirates white and yellow, but I liked the effect of it on the new Soldier's Fort in the new Pirates. I would use green headlamp bricks to do "arms" of the cactus and support the vertical parts, rather than the 1x4 plate in your model. Cute interior - although I think using brown plates (to do pews/boards) is superior to brown chairs. Quote
WesternOutlaw Posted November 30, 2009 Author Posted November 30, 2009 Thanks fellas. This is the good, minus the bad or the ugly ! Darn toot'n! Start of a new series? Yes - Mexican Village in fact. Not quite sure that the scale of the large doors quite matches the rest of the model, but the overall effect is still good. I didn't think the large doors were too large -now you've got me looking at them. Is that dark red roof or just the lighting? Standard red. I'll post some detailed images later today. I would use green headlamp bricks to do "arms" of the cactus and support the vertical parts, rather than the 1x4 plate in your model. That's a good suggestion. I had not thought of using the arms. I think using brown plates (to do pews/boards) is superior to brown chairs. That would look good. I've had 10 brown chairs in a pile that I've never used -they just seemed right for the occasion. Now that I've built it, I want to wreck the whole thing and reconstruct it (not from any of your comments), I'm just not happy with the combination of colors. Quote
Admiral Croissant Posted November 30, 2009 Posted November 30, 2009 I've seen 'The manificent seven' as well (or at least for the biggest part) and I think you did a good job on this. Your cactus could be better but the building itself is great Did you also make something of the other side (back) of this building? In that case I'd like to see that as well. Quote
Hound Knight Posted November 30, 2009 Posted November 30, 2009 Wow, another 5-star creation from the Brickster! It reminds me of this: Quote
Commodore Hornbricker Posted November 30, 2009 Posted November 30, 2009 You are on fire. You are making me feel bad. I haven't built anything in two months. It looks beautiful. It seems kind of lonely though without any minifigures in the pictures. Quote
Emperor Claudius Rome Posted November 30, 2009 Posted November 30, 2009 I always loved you work. So, does this mean Mexican soldiers? Quote
Klaus-Dieter Posted November 30, 2009 Posted November 30, 2009 This is a great MOC, TheBrickster! I really it! It looks very realistic! The most I like the nice interior and the cactus. Very well done! Klaus-Dieter Quote
Captain Blackmoor Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 And he strikes again! I'm in awe of your building speed. The church/mission is great, the only nitpick I have are the red 1x1 round bricks sticking out of the walls, I think brown looks better. As well for the roof. I also notice a nice stained glass window. Quote
WesternOutlaw Posted December 1, 2009 Author Posted December 1, 2009 Did you also make something of the other side (back) of this building? Not too much in the back, aside from a stain glass window. It could maybe use another entry point. It reminds me of this: That's the one. Good research HK. You are making me feel bad. I haven't built anything in two months. I go in "building spurts". Don't feel bad though. Quality is much more important than quantity. I spend a whole day on this creation, building, and rebuilding. I seldom spend an entire day on anything. It seems kind of lonely though without any minifigures in the pictures. We may just be seeing some of those figs as the village expands. So, does this mean Mexican soldiers? Good thinking - maybe. The most I like the nice interior and the cactus. Thanks KD. Seems some don't like the simple cactus. I have are the red 1x1 round bricks sticking out of the walls, I think brown looks better. As well for the roof. I like the red roof, but not sure about the round bricks. They were initially tan, but I changed them to red for a more terracota look. Here's some additional images of the MOC (again taken at night): Front: Front right: Front left: Left: Rear (needs a door, doesn't it?) Removable roof: Removable tower: Interior side: Interior (from alter): Interior (from side): Alter: Thanks for all the feedback. Now I want to destroy and build a new one. I think there's too much color. Quote
Rick Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 The red roof indeed adds some color to the whole structure, but are the beams(?) sticking out of the sides (represented by 1 x 1 round bricks) also supposed to be red. Wouldn't they look better in brown. Furthermore, I absolutely like the interior a lot. Looks very finished even though it's relatively 'simple'. Quote
Legostein Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 Hello! A great opening to your new theme line! A nice playset with lots of functionality. My favourite details is the trumpet decoration. That's very original! Cheers, ~ Christopher Quote
Ratshot Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 Another Lego set lookalike! Really nice work If this were my MOC I would add more seating in the sanctuary. Quote
WesternOutlaw Posted December 2, 2009 Author Posted December 2, 2009 Thanks guys. but are the beams(?) sticking out of the sides (represented by 1 x 1 round bricks) also supposed to be red. Wouldn't they look better in brown. Those aren't meant to be beams, but rather those ornamental rain/drainage pipes that are usually red/rust colored in Spanish/Mexican architecture. I don't know that they're called though. My favourite details is the trumpet decoration. That's very original! I wanted some gold/bling. I think the trumpets are also a bit symbolic for rejoicing. If this were my MOC I would add more seating in the sanctuary. Yes, good suggestion. I only had 10 brown chairs available at the time. Quote
Ratshot Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 (edited) Yes, good suggestion. I only had 10 brown chairs available at the time. I know how you feel I find brown chairs are hard to come by. Edited December 2, 2009 by Ratshot Quote
CommanderFox Posted December 5, 2009 Posted December 5, 2009 Yay! another series from Brickster! I loved your other one and I bet this one will be just as good! I love this little church. Really nice job with it. I like the colours. really well done and I can't wait to see more, especially some cool Mexicans running around! CommanderFox Quote
Batbrick Posted December 5, 2009 Posted December 5, 2009 Wonderful job as expected TheBrickster, sorry I missed this one! The way you've done the colours really works, especially the interior with glazed window. I love the use of trumpets, and it certainly gives off a Spanish vibe! Batbrick Away! Quote
Zorro Posted December 6, 2009 Posted December 6, 2009 Seems like a wonderfull subtheme for your Western theme. I really like this mission/church, the interior is amazing. I will await the minifigs and other buildings of your Mexican village. Quote
Ras 74 Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 Very great theme! You do recognize this type of house very well from so many old good western movies. I again must point out that all your models are very LEGOish made. Not over detailed, but still enough to make a satisfiction for your eyes. Just one question though, where are the mini-figs? Quote
I Scream Clone Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 This is a great Spanish Mission Brickster, really identifiable straight away. I love the overall design and colour scheme, but do feel the doors are a tad large as was mentioned earlier, otherwise this is great for a day build. Wish I had a whole day spare to MOC Quote
Hound Knight Posted December 12, 2009 Posted December 12, 2009 That's the one. Good research HK.Now I want to destroy and build a new one. I think there's too much color. The Magnificent Seven is one of my all-time favorite movies, I instantly thought of that when I saw your MOC. I like the colors. Quote
