Posted December 1, 200915 yr Lately I've noticed some comments about the knew flags VS the old ones so I thought it would be nice to start a topic/poll on it. Here are some pics for reference. The solid ones.... Small Imperial Guards Flag. Large Imperial Soldiers flag. The soft ones.... Soldiers flag Pirates flag. Personally I like the new ones better, they have a more realistic look to them. Ratshot
December 1, 200915 yr I like the new ones overall. However I like the small old flags with the bar clips on them(2x2?). I don't think LEGO makes any flags in those sizes any more.
December 1, 200915 yr I'm old and old school, so I have to say the old flags, they have so many more uses wince they have the bar clips. Plus I have a bunch of those and now new ones.
December 1, 200915 yr I would say the new ones in the long run since they don't have a white backround. Though I do wish they would make those small flags again.
December 2, 200915 yr I don't think I can give an unbiased answer to this, because I grew up with the old ones. And while the new ones look a little more realistic, the old ones can be attached in so many more ways. But then again the clips would also break easily, although that problem may have been confined to the earlier version of the flag. I have newer versions of the 2 x 2 flag with clips that are made of a softer plastic.
December 2, 200915 yr The old ones for me! I don't want a damaged flag on my ship, and the old ones are easier in use. However I think I will go for a 'soft one' on the ship that I'm buildng. But then I will make one myself and not a damaged one.
December 2, 200915 yr The old ones are better between these two types, but the cloth ones are the best.
December 2, 200915 yr the cloth ones are the best. I was going to say the same. You forgot about this third type:
December 2, 200915 yr So many memories of broken clips on flags - rather traumatic as a kid too with limited Lego! So I'd have to say on balance the new ones are superior. However, they only really work for a direct comparison with the large old flags. The small flags are still used for new Lego (or were still for the new Pirates - admittedly MMP and others use that other one-sided flag/sign which is sturdier but inferior).
December 2, 200915 yr Of the two types, I think I like the new type more. However, material is one thing, the picture on the flag is another. I hate the new pirate flag with the disproportional skull. I got one with my Brickbeard's Bounty but I don't think I'll ever use it. But the new soft imperial flag is great. So I must say that if - having both types available - I were to choose a big pirate flag for a MOC, it would be the old solid flag because I like the picture better. But if I were to choose a big Imperial flag, I'd go for the new soft one.
December 2, 200915 yr Too bad it isn't as simple as "old" or "new" for me. The old small ones are great; The old large ones have multiple usage and great for MOCing; The new (cloth) small ones don't excist (I think); The new large ones are great flags, but just that. So depending on what you what them for you need to take your pick. Leading to the conclusion: "Keep 'm all".
December 2, 200915 yr As far as small flags go, they're all solid, and the imperial flag is very similar to the old version so no big deal there. Among pirate flags, I'd still choose the old one, cause the pattern on it is so much better.
December 2, 200915 yr I like the new ones overall. However I like the small old flags with the bar clips on them(2x2?). I don't think LEGO makes any flags in those sizes any more. They do. This review is of a 2009 set and contains two hard flas with the clips. http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?...c=28750&hl=
December 2, 200915 yr I like the new ones because they seems more realistic for me. I'm fan of old pirates but i love new flags
December 2, 200915 yr Interesting poll! I think the material used in the new flags is better, but I prefer the old patterns since the new ones are more cartoony. It would be ideal if they made soft plastic flags (or cloth would be even better!) with the old patterns.
December 2, 200915 yr Author You forgot about this third type: I left them out on purpose. I wanted the two main types of flags.
December 5, 200915 yr i said the new ones because they don't break (unless you yank it from the stick its on) and when worn out they wont fall down the stick, and not stay at the top like good flags should do
December 6, 200915 yr Personally, I prefer the old ones because for some reason I have some innate love for the older sets. It's hard to describe, but I'm sure if you feel the same way you know what I'm talking about . I think if the new flags weren't plastic, but cloth... they would be on par with the older plastic/cloth flags. Cloth is probably the best all the way around, since they can be straightened to look like new (if there's no serious stains), but with the plastic if they're bent I don't think there's much you can do. Also, I think the older patterns, like many have said, are better.
December 7, 200915 yr I prefer the Playmobil plastic Flags. they got both "realistic look" and "Plastic" advantages of the old flags. you can see here on top of this boat: http://www.playmobil-butikken.com/KMSKRS/b...mobil/4424b.jpg Lego have to copy playmobil for Flags. It's possible to use Playmobil flags on lego boats but it needs a little adjustment.
December 8, 200915 yr I was going to say the same. You forgot about this third type: That one is best by far- or then customized paper ones
December 8, 200915 yr Too many hard vs. soft jokes come to mind with this topic. Specific to Lego however, I'd have to go with the original. It's classic, it feels like a Lego, it functions like a Lego. I've just never liked the papery type flags as much but I suppose they have their place in the line.
