David Thomsen Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 The 'pirate advent calendar story review' thread seems to just be about Mariann's review... I thought there should be another thread for people to share their general thoughts about the calendar. I have to say I'm a little disappointed by day one. Just Brickbeard? With a sword? I have half a dozen of those already! Maybe if the calendar came out last year, before the theme itself, I would have been a bit more gleeful. (My girlfriend has her own advent calendar, and she insists on having Brickbeard wear his epaulettes upside down. Can someone explain this behaviour to me?) Day two was a little better... The lantern looks like an appropriately sturdy device to keep aboard an unstable wooden ship. I think the table could have had something else on it though, like a goblet. Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted December 3, 2009 Governor Posted December 3, 2009 So the gist of this thread is for those who are opening the calendar day by day and have no idea what's coming up? I feel this thread needs a specific angle because we've already got a couple dealing with the calendar. So perhaps we could have a spoiler free discussion thread. (My girlfriend has her own advent calendar, and she insists on having Brickbeard wear his epaulettes upside down. Can someone explain this behaviour to me?) She's a girl, enough said Quote
David Thomsen Posted December 3, 2009 Author Posted December 3, 2009 So the gist of this thread is for those who are opening the calendar day by day and have no idea what's coming up? Yeah, that was it... although I think most people have either opened theirs already, or have read reviews of it, so would rather talk about the calendar as a whole than from day to day. I think it's interesting to review each day on its own... is it really worth 1/25 of the price of the calendar. If no one else participates in this thread, I think I'll just drop it. Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted December 3, 2009 Governor Posted December 3, 2009 I'm opening mine day by day too. Only slight problem with this thread is we're both in timezones which are almost 24 hours ahead of some parts of the world. So potentially we could spoil the day ahead for some people. Quote

For some reason the cup is a modern red mug, rather than the goblet which is in various pirate sets. Maybe it's supposed to be some kind of parrot feeder? I think I'll go with that, rather than it being an anachronistic mug. Quote

I think I'll go with that, rather than it being an anachronistic mug. I'd call it a colorful parrotfeeder rather than an anachronistic cup. And as to the previous table, i think its alright, even though i still have my doubt about using the INdy-map in pirate sets. Thers no ocean on it, just desert! Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted December 3, 2009 Governor Posted December 3, 2009 Maybe it's supposed to be some kind of parrot feeder? I think I'll go with that, rather than it being an anachronistic mug. When I first build it, assumed it was a parrot pearch complete with container for bird seed. I suspect the mug was used because it may seem strange that a parrot on a perch be eating from a goblet. And as to the previous table, i think its alright, even though i still have my doubt about using the INdy-map in pirate sets. Thers no ocean on it, just desert! The treasure must be hidden in the sand dunes Quote
SlyOwl Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 I'm opening mine day-by-day too. Brickbeard! A great start, and nice to get spare eps too. Table and lantern - cute addition. Can't wait to open today's (which I'm trying to forget it something about a red mug and a parrot...) (My girlfriend has her own advent calendar, and she insists on having Brickbeard wear his epaulettes upside down. Can someone explain this behaviour to me?) It adds a slightly gothic touch, which may appeal to her. Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted December 3, 2009 Governor Posted December 3, 2009 A great start, and nice to get spare eps too. So are those spare epaulettes in every calendars? I thought I was lucky and got a bonus pair. Quote
SlyOwl Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 So are those spare epaulettes in every calendars? I thought I was lucky and got a bonus pair. I think it's the standard now - epaulettes are now a piece that you get extras of, like gear sticks, 1x1 round plates, cheese slopes, technic pins and bushings etc. I got a spare pair in my Soldier Impulse too. Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted December 3, 2009 Governor Posted December 3, 2009 So what's with generosity these days? The LEGO Factory spit out too many pieces and it's like "We've got too many of the same pieces we'll just have to give them away!" Quote
Zorro Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 True enough. I don't know either why they have such kind of 'policy'. I would think it would be more effective to have always different spare parts, of course with regard of how easy they break. I never had one of my epaulettes break so far btw. On the other hand I do remember the days we had to pay 1 to even 2 USD on Bricklink for one second hand blue or red epaulette! I'm glad those days are over! Quote
Zorbas Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 On the other hand I do remember the days we had to pay 1 to even 2 USD on Bricklink for one second hand blue or red epaulette! I'm glad those days are over! What???? My god, this is something that just made me fall from my chair! On topic, I'm still waiting for my Advent Calendar by mail. I think Saturday will be the day. My first one!!! Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted December 3, 2009 Governor Posted December 3, 2009 I better go open up the door for 4th of December! Quote
Captain Blackmoor Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 The Advert Calendar is still not in my collection. And that is a shame. I think I'm already too late, but is it actually such a 'must have' set? It doesn't contain something spectacular. \ Quote
Commodore Hornbricker Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 I am opening my copy up with my two daughters day by day also! We are loving it! Quote
David Thomsen Posted December 4, 2009 Author Posted December 4, 2009 Day four: A soldier. Alas, the same bearded smirk minifig head that comes with almost every pirate set, including the smallest and second smallest. I'm beginning to notice a pattern: one minifig, followed by two accessories. If this is correct, tomorrow and the day after will have something appropriate for a soldier. Quote
The Cobra Posted December 4, 2009 Posted December 4, 2009 Day four: A soldier. Alas, the same bearded smirk minifig head that comes with almost every pirate set, including the smallest and second smallest. And that's annoying. The best use for this face was 7009 The Final joust (face could be hidden by helmet's visor). I'm beginning to notice a pattern: one minifig, followed by two accessories. If this is correct, tomorrow and the day after will have something appropriate for a soldier. Below is a spoiler so highlight at your own peril! That's usually the standard for Advent calendars. Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted December 4, 2009 Governor Posted December 4, 2009 That's usually the standard for Advent calendars. NO SPOILERS!!! In a few hours it will be time to open door number 5... Quote
SlyOwl Posted December 4, 2009 Posted December 4, 2009 I think I'm already too late, but is it actually such a 'must have' set? It doesn't contain something spectacular. \ Worth getting if you haven't got many of the other sets (like me). Mermaid, castaway, wench are the minifig highlights, but the rest is also worth getting, like the swordfish. I'm beginning to notice a pattern: one minifig, followed by two accessories. If this is correct, tomorrow and the day after will have something appropriate for a soldier. It does fit - 1 fig, 2 accessories; 8 figs in all -> 24 days. Quote
The Cobra Posted December 4, 2009 Posted December 4, 2009 Sorry, gents, I REALLY didn't think that was a spoiler. Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted December 4, 2009 Governor Posted December 4, 2009 Well yeah... Now I know whether to expect a mini-figure or an accessory so some of the randomness has been removed Quote
David Thomsen Posted December 4, 2009 Author Posted December 4, 2009 It does fit - 1 fig, 2 accessories; 8 figs in all -> 24 days. Wait... aren't there supposed to be 25 days? I thought the last one was supposed to be opened on Christmas day. I hadn't even noticed there were only 24. Does this mean I've been doing it wrong, and that you're supposed to open the 1st on the 2nd, and so on? I've never had an advent calendar, so I assumed the number represented the day of the month. Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted December 4, 2009 Governor Posted December 4, 2009 It says quite prominently on the box there are only 24 days. I wouldn't complain about 25 though. Quote
SlyOwl Posted December 5, 2009 Posted December 5, 2009 Wait... aren't there supposed to be 25 days? I thought the last one was supposed to be opened on Christmas day. I've never had an advent calendar, so I assumed the number represented the day of the month. Some calendars have 25 days, but most have 24 now (I guess it's because 4x6 is more aesthetically pleasing than 5x5). You don't get a window for Christmas Day itself. Nice little cannon today Quote
