David Thomsen Posted December 5, 2009 Author Posted December 5, 2009 I guess having 24 days is an incentive to buy an extra lego set for the 25th day. This little mortar cannon is my favourite so far. It actually looks the part. Quote
David Thomsen Posted December 16, 2009 Author Posted December 16, 2009 I know no one else is really participating in this thread, but there's a couple of things I've been wanting to comment on... The grey hair for the castaways is brilliant. I much prefer it to the cloth cap he used to have. And the hair piece fits in so well with the beard! Looking back, I see that the hair piece was first used with Dumbledore, so it's not a coincidence they match. I wonder if the caveman has a separate beard and hair and if they can be mixed and matched with these pieces. That could introduce some interesting possibilities. Not quite sure how the Mermaid fits in... I can't really have her as a character in my Pirate world since she's already the figurehead of a ship. But I guess she's nice to have. Today's one has another red mug, and this time it can't be explained as a parrot feeder. Also I'm not sure why they've given us a slight variation on a previous table... are there really that few ideas in the pirate world? Quote
Swash Buckler Posted December 16, 2009 Posted December 16, 2009 I'd call it a colorful parrotfeeder rather than an anachronistic cup. And as to the previous table, i think its alright, even though i still have my doubt about using the INdy-map in pirate sets. Thers no ocean on it, just desert! Well cup is not anachronistic at all- it is just colored strangely- it is like old pints no problems there- dynamite in the pirate set (soldiers fort- is terrible anachronism to me it is clear 19th century invention by Alfred Nobel nothing to do with pirates ) Also strangely enough -yellow banana is actually slight anachronism -naturally they were green until they for some reason became to turn yellow in the Caribbean but that happened in the 19th century too- if my info is right Also the so-called "Indy map" shows just a blue line that can be both river and shore so actually it suits for pirates sets as well- many 17th, 18th century maps didn't have whole ocean colored with blue either so no problems either with that- probs solved I know no one else is really participating in this thread, but there's a couple of things I've been wanting to comment on...The grey hair for the castaways is brilliant. Yeah i wondered that too- i was expecting the sawfish to be with mermaid -but no table and rat? Also it is dumb that plastic inside the calendar is transparent- you can peek the future surprises- not good for kids who spoil their own fun when being too curious Kids can be with not opening the surprise too early but not without taking a little peek- i -of course- as more mature person do not do such a childish things I guess having 24 days is an incentive to buy an extra lego set for the 25th day. This little mortar cannon is my favourite so far. It actually looks the part. Yeah its nice but actually it looks better if both of the 1x1 round pieces are in the front of the the one 1x1 (with a hole)- it is too little to be a mortar but it looks like a swiwelgun a bit Quote

I'd assume the caveman hair/beard is one piece - there's no obvious division, and beards can't rotate as far if they're put onto the neck. Today's one has another red mug, and this time it can't be explained as a parrot feeder. Also I'm not sure why they've given us a slight variation on a previous table... are there really that few ideas in the pirate world? Hmm... disappointing to be sure (not as bad as the spade and pickaxe in a barrel, but that was kinda necessity for an all-round pirate set)... brown and tan parts are always welcome, but true, two tables is a bit on the cheap side. I must say though, the creatures thus far have been great - a monkey, crab, croc, clam! I'm also loving the figs, a great array, particularly for those with few modern pirate sets. Quote
SlyOwl Posted December 24, 2009 Posted December 24, 2009 Not meaning to double post, but as this was the last day, what were everyone's thoughts on the calendar as a whole, when opened day-by-day? Personally, I loved it. Enough minifigs and great new parts to balance out some of the more mundane stuff, like tables and under-the-sea scenes. The treasure chest wasn't such a great thing for the last day - true, it fits, but ultimately the swordfish or mermaid would have been better, as they're rarer (I'm thinking similar to the Jester last year)... David Thomsen Posted December 24, 2009 Author Posted December 24, 2009 I'm a bit confused as to why the Pirate calendar is only 60% of the size of the City one, even though they're the same price. There are a couple of large pieces like the swordfish and the treasure chest and the barrel that take up a lot of space, but that doesn't really account for the piece count difference. I wouldn't have cared if there was at least one unique minifig, but almost everything has been seen before. I think I was more excited by the idea of the advent calendar than I am by the execution. No new moulds? No unique minifigs? It's like an expensive parts set. Quote
