Izzy Posted December 8, 2009 Posted December 8, 2009 That is absolutely amazing Sly Owl, you really have out done yourself with such great and unique use of pieces. My favourite part that made me laugh out loud is the monk defending himself with the giant ladle. Classic! Quote
fenrir Posted December 8, 2009 Posted December 8, 2009 Beautyfull.... A great Moc. It reminds me of some abbey's I've seen in Scotland Quote
Big Cam Posted December 8, 2009 Posted December 8, 2009 Slyowl you ahve done a ton of great work here. I absolutely love the roof, is the entire thing two layers deep just so that the hole looks legitk?? Brilliant. The flippers above the door, not sure where you got them in grey but it works really good. The courtyard is pretty basic but your minifig layout is excellent, I love the monks wardrobes, and the positioning of all the figs. I was stunned by the detail work on the outside, in the garden, that cool fence, adn the walls, but then POW, there's an inside. I love the table being turned over by the gaurds, it looks like an action shot just frozen in time. The windows, the chandelears, the incredible arches, the brickwork, the mantle for the bread and wine (I grew up Catholic), you nailed it. OK, I'm out of breathe, well if I'd been talking. I truely hope you save all these pictures somewhere, because these are truely works of art! Quote
mautara Posted December 8, 2009 Posted December 8, 2009 Very beautiful and very detailed as usual when a MOC comes from the master Sly Owl! I expecially love the cross on the altar  Quote
Wout Posted December 8, 2009 Posted December 8, 2009 What a terriffic moc from a tragic scene. The exterior is as great as the interior and the details are great. The fighting scenes between the monks and soldiers are very nice. I like also the skulls from the dead monks buried under the floor. Quote
Commodore Hornbricker Posted December 8, 2009 Posted December 8, 2009 (edited) Dude. You are freakin Lego Genious! The exterior with that cool broken roof design is amazing and your window is extremely clever but the interior is just off the charts cool! I also like the inclusion of a row of your own heads at the bottom. It makes for a great Lego signature. Edited December 8, 2009 by Commodore Hornbricker Quote
Ratshot Posted December 8, 2009 Posted December 8, 2009 Dude. You are freakin Lego geneous! Its a little obvious don't ya think? You certainly have a gift SlyOwl What do your parents/friends think of your MOCs? Quote
Sir Dillon Posted December 9, 2009 Posted December 9, 2009 My favourite of your entries this year so far. You make good use of the cutaway sections, allowing a bevy of details in a relatively small area. The area of the roof in disrepair and the metal framing in the windows stand out in particular. I also like the use of white walls in the interior. Why are the buttresses spaced the way they are? It doesn't look bad, but I would think the supports should have an even area between each other, matching the pillars on the interior. Quote
Commodore_Norrington Posted December 9, 2009 Posted December 9, 2009 Marvelous...very nice MOC... Quote
Captain Blackmoor Posted December 9, 2009 Posted December 9, 2009 I love the texture of the roof! very datailed Once again an amazingly detailed MOC from SlyOwl Yup! A great creation from SlyOwl again, packed with detail and original ideas. Awesome. Quote
Lego Lassie Posted December 9, 2009 Posted December 9, 2009 I love examining MOCs like this for there is so much to see and I am always amazed at the ingenious uses for parts that I would never guess could be used in such a way. Every scene has it's own motion and the level of detail is fantastic! I love the smallest details for they seem to bring reality to the whole thing such as the carrots that remain unpicked and the shovel stuck in the dirt. Then there's the lone monk fleeing through the trees perhaps to jump aboard the goat and make good his getaway! Quote
Dragonator Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 I must say that this is one of my favourites too, what an interesting idea to base a MOC on. You've pulled it off really well, and included lots of interesting things to look at. Two features which really jumped out at me when I first saw it were the use of a black outline for the windows, and the lovely damaged roof. Both are very nice details that have been well executed. The overall composition is well laid out, with the indoor section, the entrance, the vegetable garden and the are out back nicely divided up with walls and gates. I thought the drain pipe and barrel were a nice addition, lots of interesting things hidden away in corners here. I have to love the fence technique in the back section. I also wonder about the buttresses, the middle one looks like it is almost piercing that window. I presume they are unevenly spaced to allow for the wall separating the garden, and the entrance door? Lovely fountain by the way. In terms of the interior, I have to say my favourite part is the ceiling area, with the lovely gargoyles and the hanging chandeliers. I think the floor area could do with some sort of mosaic or tile detailing, but it looks fine as it is. It just looks a little plain compared with the detailed ground outside. I must say I'm personally not such a great fan of the white walls, they look a little odd to me with all the greys mixed in, but I can see the idea behind it. I guess it just doesn't appeal so much to me, considering the area above the pillars is all grey. It is a nice use of discoloured white pieces, too. I really like the three pillars in there, a nice detail as apposed to simply using round bricks. Can't say I am quite getting what the tape recording piece is meant to represent around the altar, some sort of carving detail I presume. The cross is a neat design, very good use of parts there. One thing I don't quite understand is that from the slope of the roof on the outside and the half of the other window that can be seen further up the wall, it appears that this room is meant to give the impression of being much larger than what you have built. Why then, is the altar not central? I just get the impression that it is off to the side, and that only half the room is shown in the diorama, if you get what I mean. Is this meant to be a side chapel perhaps? Overall an excellent job SlyOwl, from the monks to the interesting fight scenes and the great technique use in the architecture, this is a very well presented MOC. I wish you the best of luck in the contest, you are sure to do well. Quote
SlyOwl Posted December 11, 2009 Author Posted December 11, 2009 Thanks all! I never realised this one would be so popular! The texture of the roof, the hole in the roof, the ornamental designs... it's just those 'tape tiles' again: they keep looking like... well, tapes... to me. I bought them off Bricklink in order to brasso into plain tiles... but I kinda like them. I can understand people's dislike of them, as I have the same feelings to an extent, but I keep saying to myself I might as well use them before I brasso them... One question : I strong is the fountain ? Everything is keep in place with the rubber band ?Anyway, you aim for the Master Builder title hum ? Not very strong at all; just the one rubber band. It's an old band though, so it would be stronger with a new one. Not a technique I'd like to use much without further reinforcement. Master Builder... why do you think I build all these so quickly? Did you sharpy the hair on the heads? Yup. Now to get it off... What is the hands doing in that bin in the back? Goat food - straw or something. I couldn't find any sand green hands off the hoof for grass... and I've got none of those rare normal green hands... yet *green army men* Nevertheless, let me make a little criticism for the first time The clothes and the armors are a bit too ancient for 1536, it was not the Middle Ages anymore, specially in England! My history is a little hazy... I don't think the Dissolution was a violent process at all anwyay... How in all the world do you find the time to build all this??? Skimping on school work? Maybe... What do your parents/friends think of your MOCs? My damily are all behind me... and my friends look at it wryly, but they're generally impressed, or accepting at least. Why are the buttresses spaced the way they are? It doesn't look bad, but I would think the supports should have an even area between each other, matching the pillars on the interior. It was kind of random - I built them long before the inside of the building (the arches/number of pillars I could build determined that). The door and flower bed played a role in their positions, but it was largely ad-hoc. a)I also wonder about the buttresses, the middle one looks like it is almost piercing that window. b)I must say I'm personally not such a great fan of the white walls, they look a little odd to me with all the greys mixed in, but I can see the idea behind it. Is this meant to be a side chapel perhaps? Woah, Draggy, you're on fire! I've answered some of your other questions above, but here's the rest - a) That was quite a problem - getting the butresses high and detailed enough, whilst not going into the windows! b) Whitewashed seemed to pretty common back then... and I also ran out of grey! C) It was originally only going to be based around the complete window there, so the altar was in the middle. But then there was the problem of the absence of the opposite pillars, and the whole building looked a bit small, so I bigged it up, pretending there was a whole building twice the size there. But the original interior furnishings remained... It could be a side-chapel/altar, yes. Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted December 12, 2009 Governor Posted December 12, 2009 Oh what lovely vegetable garden with succulent juicy cabbages. Or are they lettuce? Ummm... What's the plural of lettuce? Lettuces? Letti? Quote

Hound Knight Posted December 12, 2009 Posted December 12, 2009 Amazing texture and detail you've put in this MOC, this is your best yet IMO. Oh, I like the monk hairdo as well. Quote
