Claus von Nassau Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 (edited) after a year of darkness, i've started again on builing a flag schip for my imperial guard's. here are some pic's on the progress i've made in a few weeks, can't spend more the 3 or 4 hours per week on it. coment and advice are always welkom http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/klaas/ship/sideview.jpg http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/klaas/ship/thumblehome.jpg http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/klaas/ship/figurehead.jpg http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/klaas/ship/rearview.jpg some update's i've made in a few day's Edited December 9, 2009 by Claus von Nassau Quote
Joey Lock Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 Wow, That is quite nice! The Colour scheme somehow works! My advice would be try to put 2 Windows at the stern, rather than just the one with shutters. It might look better, Test it out. I'd also say, if you can, Make it longer. The length and height don't really match. usually tall 3 deckers are long, I'd say your length would fit a two decker. Still go with the three decks, Just see if you can buy like 2-3 extra hull pieces. Also mabye change the black bottom part to Brown if you can. It will make the Hull look bigger, like the Big ships had. And the figurehead is a brilliant idea! Quote
tedbeard Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 Love the use of the "stained glass" in the stern and the figurehead. I am also pleased to see the sloped tumblehome for a change of pace. It has a different look to the hinged sides that seems to be ubiquitous recently. Quote
Joey Lock Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 It has a different look to the hinged sides that seems to be ubiquitous recently. Indeed! Not insulting Captain Greenhairs teachings but I believe sloped looks more...Well...like Lego should be. Most of the latest ships are "non-playable" I mean, all the rigging so close together, no interior, fragile hinges? It is good to see some slopes like I have used on the HMS Unicorn, But I guess it's easier to buy standard bricks than expensive yellow slopes. The some 100-150 slopes I used for the Unicorn cost me around £60 alone. Quote
Claus von Nassau Posted December 7, 2009 Author Posted December 7, 2009 the use of the slope bricks, was an id wich was told me 3 years ago, when the fist version was nearly compleet. so i've took it apart ad orded some of the slope's to have a good look at it myself. its give it the legoish look to it. when it stands next to the bsb an ses it tecnique is very much the same and doenst fall out line (to much) now ive got 6 midsections on it. i've begon with 9 but it was to long some how it didn't look right. Try a 7th or 8th Midsection. If you don't have enough Blue bricks, just use some multi coloured bricks to visualise the sides and lenghth. Quote
Rick Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 Indeed, I also like the steep slopes used to construct the sides. Although I think the cabin needs a lot more detailing and a lot more windows. There are plenty of examples around here on the Pirates forum. To be honest I also don't really like the stained glass. Quote

The ship should increase more length or decrease the hight. The colour scheme is nice. Edited December 7, 2009 by maydayartist Quote

Claus von Nassau Posted December 8, 2009 Author Posted December 8, 2009 i've been working on the idea to make the ship larger. now i've got 6 midsection's on it. i want to expand it to 9 midsections. i've been calculating the cost of it. it would be around 100 euro's. and that i find to much for the moment. because of the way i've been builing this ship altering it on a later time would be possible without taking the in tire ship apart (again) C&C are welkom Claus Quote

Test the length with spare bricks, if it looks in proportion, go buy! If it looks slightly out of proportion, Don't listen to Greenhair or Blackmoor, they will tell you to build it "EXACTLY" to replica scale. And try to persuade you to cut down your cannon. But do not give in! 9 midsections would be a nice length, but it depends. Firstly I will need to know: 1. How many cannons are you thinking of having 2. What sort of ship shall it be? 3. Whats the number of space between each gunport? Quote
Captain Green Hair Posted December 8, 2009 Posted December 8, 2009 You've asked my opinion, but i can not make up what exactly you are after? Is it supposed to be a realistic ship, or a fantasy playful one? The latter isn't really my thing, so my opinion would be rather worthless I'm afraid. Quote
Commodore Hornbricker Posted December 8, 2009 Posted December 8, 2009 A wonderful and interesting design. The blue is a little overwhelming. Have you tried to mix in a little white or black to break up the blue just a little more? A very nice ship none the less. Quote

I would like to hear your opinion about the hight and lenght of the ship and pehaps you've got some constuction advice, because i can't get the bow just right.. Quote
the Inventor Posted December 9, 2009 Posted December 9, 2009 Although its a nice ship, the proportions are wrong, your ship is much to high It would look a lot better if you removed one gun deck or make your ship longer. And those mast are too short, you should make them longer. Good luck! the Inventor Quote
Captain Green Hair Posted December 9, 2009 Posted December 9, 2009 Your ship is indeed too high. In order to make it lower you could make the space in between gundecks a bit less, or lose 1 deck. At the bow you have stopped the hull too early, the headrails just stick out the front and connect the bow with the prowl. At the back i would loose the stained glass window and bring the windows you are using at the top down a bit. Other then that I would advise you to study ships a bit more, to learn about the proportions, details etc. You can find many recourses in the library that is pinned in the pirate forum. That's my 2 cents, if you have further specific questions, feel free to ask. I do like your figurehead though, very creative! Quote
Claus von Nassau Posted December 14, 2009 Author Posted December 14, 2009 i've done some thinking the last few days. and there's goinig to be a version 4! around the holiday's iám taking it apart (again) i've been looking around for some detaild pictures of real ship's and found a lot ideas to work out. the new size will be 9 midsection's and 3 decks ps the stained glass is suposed to be a painting. i've seen it on the batavia and that's how i've got the idea. advice, comment and constructive advice are welkom Claus Quote
Captain Blackmoor Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 I think it will be even more creative to design stern details yourself instead of using the stained glass piece. It's rather bulky, and personally I just don't like big parts. Your ship has some very nice aspects, like the good Captain Greenhair already said; the figurehead is ingenious. My advise is to keep experimenting with the curved shapes of the ship. The more the better. I wish you all the best on your HMS Phoenix Claus! Quote

I wish you all the best on your HMS Phoenix Claus! the figurehead has a story of its own. i've always been in to castle building and i wanted a change 3 years ago. so i've decided to build a schip. after i took it apart for the second time en started building again my little brother said: "like a phoenix its will rise from is ashes" i liked the name and suddenly there was a phoenix in a harry potter set........... a name and figurehead was born. i've decided to make it look more realistic or at least give it a try. and the stained glass wil return in the castle where it looked a lot beter. claus Quote
