Let it be 10 random things...

- I have never got a fine for driving over the speed limits

- I bought the DVD box sets of both my favourite movies (Lord of the Rings trilogy) and my favourite TV show (BBC's Coupling) on the same day at Stansted airport, London sometimes many years ago. Since I bought them, I've never watched the LoTR movies (I only watched the many extras), but I instead watch the whole 4 Coupling series once a year, and yes, I pretty much know all the jokes by memory by now :classic:

- I once won a prize in a regional school contest for designing a car

- today I counted that I have 8 different types of bags of chips in the kitchen (and no, I am not at all fat, I just like stashing snacks for the upcoming weeks  )

- the last music record I've been listening to from start to finish is "Spirit of Eden" by Talk Talk (1988)

- all my identity documents say my eyes are brown, as it seems from normal distance, but if you look from a short distance they are definitely green

- I was very good at school, but in high school I managed to get once a negative mark in a test for every single subject (except Computer Science)

- after I was born, I never slept in a hospital until the day my first child was born

- the last book I've read is a heavy tome about jazz harmony and melody composition techniques

- if I remember right, I should currently have 13 still-unopened Lego sets waiting in my storage room

You drive over the speed limits? *huh*

No I don't, which explains why. But in many european countries it's pretty much the norm to "slightly ignore" speed limits.

I work fo the local Council in the Highways Infrastructure and Projects section. I assist the Land Surveyor and the Engineers with different things that involves site visits to resurfacing works, bridge works and for the surveying: Fields and Roads in the middle of nowhere. They buy me big steel toe, heel and midsole boots for use on site . My post is Technical Assistant but it may as well translate to gofer at times  . Its a good job and as I mentioned earlier, I am training to be a Civil Engineer sponsored by them.

Lucky you, I had to buy my own steel toed boots and the company supplied the hard hats and gas masks. Which part of Civil Engineering do you like best? What kind of courses you have to take?

Random fact about me: I enjoyed making concrete mixes and testing their compressive strength in the civil eng. material science lab.

I am studying for an HNC in Civil Engineering this year, this is the final year of the course, next is an HND which I hope to start next year. It's a part time course so I go to uni one day a week. The aspect I like best at the moment is the structural analysis, even if I did fail the phase test  (not a fan of exam conditions...). Last year the best bit was the geology side of things, as it is one of my many interests that has been in my life as long as Lego  . As for the job, my favourite part is all the nice areas we go to as Monmouthshire is a lovely section of Wales. Once we had to walk about half a mile through fields and over the railtrack to set up on the banks of the Severn River/Bristol Channel. It was a beautiful and a lovely spot.

What is an HNC and an HND? I am not familiar with those acronyms.

Have you applied any of the engineering principles learned to Lego?

Higher National Certificate and Higher National Diploma. Not sure of their equivilant in other countries but there are quite a few students international students in my class.

I have applied some of the engineering principals I learned into my Lego Building. It has certainly made my framework sturdier in MOCs and once I have more space I plan on designing and building a bridge out of Lego using what I have learned. Our final exams include an open book exam all day designing a bridge and I plan on bringing some technic bricks and pins to help me model it in 3D. Lego also helped me revise the types of support/pins/fixings on beams and the forces that effect them.

It is certainly an ineresting subject that Lego probably got me into a long time ago (my uncle had quite the collection of Technic and he is now an Environmental Engineer). Somewhat proves Lego's research right.

Hello. I live in Norway, and it's a great country.

* I'm a social democrat.

* I oppose the European Union and I'm fighting against a Norwegian membership.

* I'm an atheist.

* I love to get drunk on moonshine and cheap beer. But I also appreciate good quality whisky and vodka.

* I want cannabis to be decriminalized or legalized in Norway. There's no point in having such a mild drug fueling organized crime.

* I'm in my Dark Ages, which means I'm not really into LEGO anymore. What the heck am I doing writing on this forum then?

* I think I have AD/HD, but I'm not diagnosed. Sometimes I really think I could use some medication, though...

* I love chemistry, mathematics and physics and I study all the three subjects at school. I have top grades in chemistry and physics.

* At home I have my own chemistry lab where I do various kinds of reactions (No drugs, I HATE drug cooks).

* I had a period where I was into amateur pyrotechnics, but that's over now. I think however I'm going to make some fireworks for the next new year's eve.

* I know next to nothing about computers. The specs of a processor tell me very little. I wish I knew more about stuff like this...

* I love Nintendo, especially the Legend of Zelda series.

* ...But I also love StarCraft.

* The only televised sport I can stand to watch is professional, Korean StarCraft competitions. I love it.

* I used to be an active alpine skier in competitions, but I quit because I'm lazy and I sucked. I still love downhill competitions, though. 90 km/h om 2 meter skis feels absolutely awesome.

* Now I only ride twintip skis.

* I play the bass in a semi-serious punk band and in a very unserious improvised black metal band.

* I can't stand people from "

I saw those before. I was bored out of my mind  The only sport I really watch is the occasional soccer match. Stupid Thierry Henry.

Hey I'm from the US and here's a few random things about me.

  • I live in DC
  • I'm a Unitarian.
  • My cat has 5 toes on both his front paws which he always slaps me with.
  • I'm a Trekkie, not a trekker, a Trekk-IE.
  • ....But I also really like Doctor Who and Star Wars.
  • I am indeed a nerd (if you could'nt tell  )
  • My first word was blue.
  • I hate eggs, regular and green
  • There was a time in my life when I was obssesd with a theme in megablocks called Area 51.
  • I've ridden an elephant.
  • I like writing a lot.
  • two plays of mine actually have won two playwriting contests in a local theatre.
  • I've seen a ghost. After my grandpa died when I was young I saw his ghost out of the window. I must have been seven at the time, and I was with my parents who were staying with my grandmother up in michigan. My grandfather had cancer so my mom had originally stayed with my grandparents to help take care of him. We found out later that he was dying so my dad and me drove up to Michigan from DC to see him one last time. After he died we stayed up there temporarily to settle his affairs and to help my grandmother recover. The next day after he died, I was watching TV by myself and right out the window stood my grandpa. He looked normal and was looking inside at me. He then said "it's alright" and he vanished.
  • I like baseball
  • I have ADD

Well that's about all I can think of.

There was an interesting thread in the Technic section recently about understanding (and maybe optimizing) a pneumatic control system mathematically. It had never occurred to me to think of Lego models in those terms, even though I do some work in control theory.

* In the future I want to study chemistry at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).

I went there last summer to see some professors. Nice place.

Oh, how exciting! Here I go.

My name's Sam.

I'm from New Zealand.

More specifically, Rotorua, a town notorious for smelling like rotton eggs (to clarify, it's only in some parts, and that's because of the sulphur deposits..).

I'm a fan of zombies, and am the proud owner of The Zombie Survival Guide.

I love and collect interesting, funny, or geeky t-shirts, and as a result have become quite fond of ThinkGeek.com.

I am an avid gamer, even if I'm not at all good at the games I play. Therefore I find Ben 'Yahtzee' Croshaw's game "reviews" (Zero Punctuation) quite entertaining.

I love all sorts of music, ranging from Christian rock to Pirate metal.

My favourite song is 'Fighting Tao' by the band Hurt. It has an epic violin solo.

I love playing Monopoly.

I follow a ridiculous amount of web-comics, 14 at my last count, not counting ones I've yet to catch up on.

I also frequent Cracked.com, and find Daniel O'Brien awfully entertaining.

Well, that's all, for now.

O_o Wow, we've got quite a bit in common. =D I still need to finish reading Pride and Prejudice and Zombies...

What web comics do you follow? (And I agree; Cracked is awesome. =D)

A couple more random facts:

- I am the neatest, messiest person you'll ever know. What I mean by that is simple: Any room I have a stake in (computer room + bedroom) tends to be trashed...but I can find anything relatively quickly.

- I am officially addicted to World of Warcraft.

That... is indeed quite true :hmpf:

On a sidenote - I've never had a speeding ticket either, but that doesn't mean I haven't had troubles with the local traffic police authorities...

And talking about cars - I'm currently considering buying a Peugeot 406 Coupe (of course, second-hand, since it's been out of production for some time now). My girlfriend is a bit reluctant to the idea of riding around on a bike and the winter around here gets pretty cold... Any Pug Coupe owners around here? I've driven around in a 2003 Peugeot 406 2.0 HDi sedan before and I absolutely loved the car (much better than the 2007 BMW 520i, mind you!), so I hope the Coupe is an even better driving experience.

- People are always asking if they'd seen me somewhere recently. Apparently, a lot of people look like me.

I get that too. It is very very strange.

I was working in a Hotel once and one of the guests was so damn convinced that he knew me from Sydney (somewhere I have never been) it took me about 10 minutes of convincing for him to drop the subject. It is the craziest thing and makes you feel VERY unoriginal.

Who ever my clones are out there, I hope they taking care of 'our' face.

My sister says there is another guy that looks like me in the Boston area. I hope he is not on America's Most Wanted list.
