Set Name: Droid Tri-Fighter

Set Number: 8086

Release: Jan 2010

Box Front

med_gallery_101_23_235.jpg

Not much to say. A view of what's inside the box.

Neat box art.

Box Rear

med_gallery_101_23_348258.jpg

Flashing the flick-missiles and other new 2010 sets.

No inspirational build.

Instructions

med_gallery_101_23_243799.jpg

Easy to follow.

Small folder.

Random Instructions Page

med_gallery_101_23_163256.jpg

Yeah, it's that simple to follow

Dreaded Sticker Sheet

med_gallery_101_23_221504.jpg

Ydrk!

I chose not to add those to the fighter.

Side View

med_gallery_101_23_261728.jpg

It does look better than the old version.

I kinda like the overall look of it

Front side view

med_gallery_101_23_88154.jpg

The cockpit is a little "off!" and reminds me too much of the Exo-Force sets.

Rear View

med_gallery_101_23_80274.jpg

Symmetric and cool.

Top View

med_gallery_101_23_234835.jpg

They've clearly put some effort into adding "greeble" and it's ok for an official set.

Tiles

med_gallery_101_23_152476.jpg

Meow! I love those new 2x4 tiles and here we get them in Dark Blue

Cockpit

med_gallery_101_23_82981.jpg

How's the droids going to control this fighter with no control unit?!?

Bottom View (Enhanced Flick-Missiles)

med_gallery_101_23_383902.jpg

A new design for the flicks, and they're much better than the regular design.

Acceptable addition of playability.

Thank gawd, it's not that technic launcher

Rocket Droid Commander

med_gallery_101_23_99378.jpg

Some yellowing of this guy makes him the commander of this raggedy fighter and it's crew of Rocket Battle Droids.

All

med_gallery_101_23_334807.jpg

The entire Rocket Battle Droid family in front of their transportation.

All Rear

med_gallery_101_23_117047.jpg

Wow, awesome rockets :hmpf:

Conclusion

An okay set with some great parts.

Wont stay in one piece long though, I am sure a lot of kids will love this.

But being mostly an OT fan this set doesn't really do anything for me.

A must for a collector, but not "all that"

Great review Kim!

It looks pretty good to me, and I look forward to geting my hands on the Commander. The stickers still upset me, but I suppose I can't change what is included in the set. :hmpf_bad:

Btw, I think the 'eyes' are in the wrong position. Maybe you could turn the front section so they are lined up (like on the box cover and instructions)? I have a keen eye for that sort of thing, sorry.

Anyway, it's nice to see you reviewing again. :classic:

Why yes, you're right

They "eyes" are off.

I did this pretty fast, so that I could share it and it looks like it was too fast

I'll redo some of the pics tomorrow when the sun is back.

Very nice review KimT! Are you one of the first to get a Star Wars 2010 set outside the US?

Not a bad little set! Might even get more than one.

Dunno!

The official launch in the toystore chain "BR" in Denmark and Sweden is today.

Though they didn't have the sets up - I had to ask the store clerk who then found me this and the Imperial Battle Pack.

I return tomorrow to get the Freeco Bike, Rebel Battle Pack, Arc Fighter and Tie Defender.

They said they wouldn't put the sets on the shelves until they had space for them *huh*

But if I could make a set number list, then they'd find the sets in the basement.

Go figure :sceptic:

Great review KimT!

This is one set I won't bother purchasing. I have the cool original, which is less oversized. I also own three Rocket battle droids, so there's no incentive for me to buy this set. That reasoning will save me

great review. something bothers me about this set, is it a ROTS set or a clone wars set? i am asking this because tri-droid fighter was not seen in clone wars animation, but strange enough those rockets droids were also not present in the Rots.

A very nice Review Kim!

This set looks alot better with pics of all of it.

I have to say though, that the droid commander doesn't look that special to me. :sceptic:

Oh well looks like a nice set and will probably get it. :sweet:

Thanks for the review!

Nice review, and good, clean photos of the set. Thanks for the picture of the Commander Droid - I agree that it doesn't seem all that special.

I voted the set below average, as I find the set just way too similar to the 2005 version (and that build was boring). It's not on my 2010 shopping list, and I very much doubt I will buy this set, unless it's at a drastically reduced price.

Good looking review Kim, I agree with not always putting on the stickers.

now maybe the index will get updated,...........I keed I keed :classic:

Nice review KimT!

I will go tomorroww and pick up a few of the new sets

Did you buy any more?

Just the 8084 Battle Pack...

I can't wait to get back from work tomorrow.

Hopefully I'll be able to share an ARC Review

Thanks for the review 'KimT'. :sweet:

Is that set CW or ROTS - I totally feel it's ROTS so it can go head to head with the new ARC-170.

The flick missiles are huge as compared to the old ones - cool !

Looks very well designed, might buy one if I have some spare cash and it's on sale.

Nice review! I might just pick up this set, if only for the cool pieces; I didn't get one the first time round.

Hate to say this to a mod and all, but your pics are a little on the large side!

According to BL, it's CW.

But hey, they've listed the TIE Defender as EP IV-VI *huh*

Isn't it EU/TFU?

TFU my behind. The Defender wasn't made until the year before the Battle of Endor. Thanks for the review KimT!

Do you by any chance have the old one, so you can take a comparison shot? I have them both now, but i haven't opened up the newer one yet.

Mkay, I'll shove it in EP IV-V-VI then.

You can check out the old Tri-Fighter in the review on the Ultimate Space Battle by Mutley.

I kinda like the set. The rocket battle droids look pretty good an Im glad they put them in this set so I didn't have to buy the hyena droid bomber  . The fighter is basic but it doesn't need to be because of its simple shape.

Thanks for the review KimT!

Actually, this fighter has never appaered in TCW. It could be seen in the opening scene of EP.III., at the Battle of Coruscant.

Hopefully I'll be able to share an ARC Review

Please do. :sweet: I'm really considering that one. I do like this set to a bit but not a fan of the figures. It'd be a enemy for the ARC. It is rather stupid for that shop to keep the 2010 sets in the basement until they have more room. :hmpf:

Pictures resized.

Unfortunately I burned one of my daylight spots today when doing the ARC review, so no new/redone pics yet.

Hopefully tomorrow.

Done.

Good review, however, I have to something to note: The central "ball" is not a cockpit, even if the boxart tells you to put a droid in there, it is just the ships main reactor and controlling droid brains in there.
