Zeya Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 If I had a big attic or basement I would have considered storing them nested or flattened in boxes. But I have a small house; homes here don't have attics or basements due to earthquakes. I kept mine for a little bit. But I realized I was simply running out of valuable space, so in the recycle bin they went. What I do is cut out the theme name on the box (e.g. "Atlantis", "Pirates") and slip that into the cover of my instructions binders. That way I can tell which binder is which on the shelf. Quote
Frolando22 Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 Greetings Eurobricks! This time I'm looking for creative members and their boxes. Call me crazy, but I stack them all over the place. I acually think they look rather nice. They're kind of like a wallpaper I guess. I've got a lot of them and I hate for them to go to waste. Challenges include: balance, sizes, and positioning. Anyway, here's a peek at my designs (sorry for some nasty flash spots ): Don't worry, they won't fall. They're firmly secured to the wall.(Wouldn't want an avalanche on my UCS AT-ST) If you're wondering, they are on the head of my bead. I'd love to hear your replies! Quote
brickbuilder Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 Whoa! That looks really cool! I usually just store them under my bed Quote
Ralph_S Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 As nice as the designs may be, I'm mostly interested in the contents of the boxes. The boxes themselves go into recycling Cheers, Ralph Quote
StoutFiles Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 In a closet out of the light. Should I ever need to resell sets, having the box and manual in good condition helps a bunch. Quote

Ceroknight Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 there are eight smaller boxes in a UCS box..enough said no, I keep them and it really helps when moving.. Quote
Frolando22 Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 Whoa! That looks really cool! I usually just store them under my bed Intersting. That's what I used to do! (I ran out of room under there though.) As for keeping them safe, I don't really care. I won't be selling them for while (or ever). Quote

Sirens-of-Titan Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 When I was younger I used to cherish every box and keep it in the best condition possible. If I was to do that now I would run out of room to move around my house. I keep some cooler little boxes, but because the pictures on the instructions book always match the box art I think those are a nice substitute. Quote
XimenaPaulina Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 When I was younger I used to cherish every box and keep it in the best condition possible. Mine's the opposite. When I was a kid I really didn't care about the boxes so all just went to the dump. But ever since I became an AFOL, I saw these boxes under a different light and appreciated them as more than cardboard storage but part of the overall experience of purchasing a Lego set. So I try to keep them in pristine condition inside the closet. BTW, this topic is similar with a previous one in the Gen. Discussions forum. Quote

ziljin Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 I have cut most of them open to save on storage space. I just use them as cardboard. The boxes are high quality cardboard great to use as mats. I think I should consider making some into storage boxes. Not sure why I never tried it before. Quote
Commander Laquiet Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 I love the Lego boxes. I think they are the best packaging for this sort of product I have seen, and they look like high quality, well designed items. And then there is the sentimental value: the box is the box. It is a part of the set. However, there is the factor of room. I couldn't store all my boxes, so sadly they inevitably enter the recycling after a few days proud display. I always keep instructions so I'll always have a copy of the box art, which is important for me. Ah well, at least I still have the pieces. But I still wish I could keep my boxes. Quote

fred67 Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 If I open a set, I throw the box away. I don't see the purpose in keeping them and don't want to end up like the people on Hoarders. I do have a number of closed sets that, if I never get the chance to build them then I may sell them. I'm short on space to put the finished set... 4504 Millennium Falcon, for example... which has skyrocketed in price since I bought it, and even if I move and get more space to display sets, might be worth it to sell and get several other LEGO sets. But once it's opened, but once it's opened, the boxes are gone. If I knew right off that I'd never be selling any, I'd dump the boxes to save space. Quote
smittyfan Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 I have binders with all my instructions in them. Like this: They are just photo sleeves you can buy at WM. The only ones I have a problem with are some of the big book ones (they are just too long for page sleeves) and the small square ones, so they are all in a tote. For boxes, I cut up most of mine when I was a kid, but since I came out of my Dark Age, I have kept them all. Smaller ones are stored in bigger boxes, and all boxes are then stored in big moving/shipping boxes. I don't keep the little bags though - You guys are nuts! hey, i do that too! i also cut up the boxes, to fit in the plastic sheet protectors, saving the pictures that aren't in the instructions, and tape 'em down to paper in a sort of scrapbook style! the instructions are also kept in the same binder, right after the box for that particular set! it's all even kept organized by set number.. (yeah, a little OCD..) currently i have two binders full! one for Belville only, and the other for everything else! but i draw the line at the plastic bags... i really don't see any use for them, once i've taken the Lego's out of them... although storage wise, i do use quite a few Ziplocks... Sirius Black Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 I always keep my set's boxes. . The reason why is that occasionally, I will resell a set that is 1-3 years old, if it has a really good resell value. I've noticed that I typically get approximately 20-25% more $$$ when I have the box. I actually have ended up "borrowing" a friends attic space for storage, so I have space for a good deal more sets . Sirius Quote
Calanon Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 When I was younger than I am now, I too loved the boxes and I still do. I really hate it if I spoil a bit of the box work, e.g. if there is some sellotape and I'm trying to undo it and it pulls some of the box up. I keep every single box, but I throw away the bags. Quote
Blondie-Wan Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 For a while as I was first coming out of my dark ages several years ago, I kept all my boxes, but they soon became unmanageable in my tiny apartment, and I had to let most of them go. I've made a point of keeping certain boxes, though: any Star Wars sets specifically pertaining to the original movie, Star Wars - Episode IV: A New Hope; any polybags; any boxes to "special" sets; any packaging that itself could be considered LEGO elements, such as the various plastic canisters. A couple months ago a friend who still has most of his sets from the early '80s decided he could no longer hang on to the boxes, but realized I might want them and so gave me some boxes from Classic Space and Castle sets. They're not in the best of shape, but I just can't bring myself to let these boxes go, so I'm trying to figure out how best to stabilize and store them. Quote
chris_austin Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 Clearly, this is a very common thing among AFOLS (and even younger FOLS). I've got set boxes and for some sets, i've even kept the bags etc. There really is no reason for keeping any internal packaging so i've decided that it's all going now. I mean what purpose does it serve? I'm not going to ever repackage a set into the bags before selling it. Keeping things for no reason or ' just in case' it might have a use one day is hoarding! Set boxes are different because they can add value to a set if you ever decide to sell any. A lot of sets sell for a decent amount of money and since I have thousands of parts, it seems silly to not basically part with a box for ££. There will be loads of sets that i've never bought but already have the pieces! All I need are a copy of instructions and I can 'have' the set! As for the boxes I currently have and want to keep, they are easy to flat pack and store in a small space. I've stored most of mine in large (how big depends on the sets) homemade cardboard folders - one for each theme. Hope this helps some of you! Quote
