I'm happy they even included one log here. Previous sets with claw arms like 8443, 8446 and 8868 didn't include anything for the model to pick up. 8446 even had the box art showing it picking up something that looked like a glowing log, but the set doesn't include anything like that.

 Indeed it does, but one expects more from Blakbird! I assume you have it?

:classic: Yes, I picked it up today. Smaller than I imagined, but it's so nice to have pneumatics in my hands again. My 7 year old helped me build it and he would have been perfectly capable of doing the whole thing. I would have written a review but I'm in LEGO disassembling mode at the moment trying to get ready to move, so I'm low on time. 200,000 Technic parts apart so far! The callouses on my fingertips are now so hard that I can't feel an iPod touch screen at all when I poke it.

I see I've lost my cool "Technic Angel of Retribution" moniker under my avatar and now have the less bad-megablocks "needs more logs". Oh well, that will teach me to try to be clever.

 I'm still in re-build mode after my move. 200,000! Are you going to re-build it all? I still haven't decided with some sets.

You'll get it back.

So do the pneumatic parts seem the same as older ones?

Love the review... and couldn't agree more!

I built it yesterday but I'm still trying to find everything I took to the Hispabrick in December and can barely move in my LEGO corner so no pics either.

The Pneumatic elements are the same as before. No quality issues... although the cylinders and pumps do not differ, but the valves are stiffer (or is that just because they are new?). Some people complained the tubes are already cut to the right length. Personally I found this a plus. I agree that it is near impossible to find good lengths of pneumatic tubing, unless you don't mind using non-official tubes in which case it is no problem at all. I'm not happy about the stiffness of the tubes. I imagine that for a ten-year-old it must be near impossible to get the hoses on the T-piece. But those hoses have been used before so nothing new there.

The valves are stiffer than the old light grey ones, but that's better for long term seal reliability.

I think a small cylinder can still push 1 valve. A 48mm cylinder can push 4 valves in a 2x2 configuration, which is not worse than with the old valves.

I got some non-official tubes in 25m lengths. I make tens of each size at a time, usually 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10 and 15cm.

I also use more 3.2mm stiff tubing for the straight bits, to reduce the balloon effect.

Therefore I cut more flexible hoses into shorter lengths for the corners.

I'd really like to get a 100m reel of the 3.2mm stiff tubing.

Let's send TLG a positive message about the return of pneumatics to the range!

Yes, I'll rebuild all of them. I need them all assembled in order to do group photos for Technicopedia, and I still need to write about all the 1995-2009 sets. Luckily, rebuilding is a good way to spend lots of time on my hobby without spending any money.

So do the pneumatic parts seem the same as older ones?

The pumps and cylinders are the same. The tubing is different. It is less flexible and a little harder to install (less silicone content?). A lot of care was taken in the instructions regarding the routing of the hoses so they are unobtrusive. I like it.

I noticed that the extra small pump which comes with it to make a compressor was actually lubricated. This was not the case in older versions I've had before.

Yes, I'll rebuild all of them.

How much time do you think it will take ? O_o (and many hundreds of hours did you spent to disassemble all the sets and to sort all the parts ?)

One whole year ? ^^

Because you may have more than 100 sets...

OMG, I would die if I had to do this. :cry_sad:

I hope that it is a yellow one, I have plenty of blue.

Needs more logs.

I have plenty if you need some more, and when these get to the shops I plan on parting at least 5 of them so will have plenty more. My store password is train, just ask for a coupon

To assemble them? Depends on how much time I spend each day, of course, but I'd expect about 6 months. Putting together every Technic set should be a special treat. I think I will build them in chronological order and take the opportunity to document some of the build steps for each to add to Technicopedia.

O_o (and many hundreds of hours did you spent to disassemble all the sets and to sort all the parts ?)

It took me about 3 months to take them all apart spending a couple of hours each night. I don't sort the parts though. The parts for each set stay in the box for that set. I never mix them. I like to keep the authentic parts with each set.

Yes, I have closer to 300 Technic sets including a bunch of MOCs I have built which were designed by other AFOLs.

OMG, I would die if I had to do this. :cry_sad:

Death is indeed a possibility. But I will go out in a blaze of glory!!

Are you pleased with this model Blakbird? It does look kinda lightweight (the lift arm looks fragile) but it's great to have pneumatics return..\

I am reasonably pleased, mostly because of the pneumatics. The tractor is not very exciting. The only feature is steering. The body is very weak structurally because it is kind of "floating" above the frame and not attached in many places. If you put any weight on the roof you will break the angle connectors. It looks good though.

The trailer is quite large and sturdy and the pneumatics are actually quite powerful. It certainly has no problem lifting logs. I don't like the worm drive claw. I would have preferred something spring loaded like 8446 (I can't believe I am using that as a good comparison) for much better playability. A small pneumatic cylinder would have been perfection (ala 8868). The logs are so smooth that they just fall out of the claw so it is difficult to actually lift them unless they are perfectly balanced.

Good collection of parts, a fun set, and a reasonable price, just not super technical. My 7 year old took one look at the parts pile and said "it doesn't have enough gears!" Touche Martin.

The extra cylinder to make a motorized compressor is an extremely welcome addition and I can't thank LEGO enough for including this option clearly aimed at AFOLs. I don't like how the actual compressor and battery box integrate with the trailer, but the main thing is that you can now get the compressor parts to use in your MOCs without selling your mortgage to Bricklink.

I just got my 2 lof loaders. The main model is rather flimsy and not easy to play with. The motorisation is a good plus, so you dont have to pump. But the best is the B model. Its so more handle-able, you can see it has better solutions, like the steering at the side on cab, or the pneumatic cylinder which allows claws to rotate. I bought the 2 loaders mainly for parts, and they were cheap (95€ and no postage).

It's yellow all right. And as you can see in this pic from TechnicBRICKs it's a simple and effective setup...

Although it doesn't take full advantage of the stroke of the small pump. You can however change the crankshaft part for a couple of liftarm 1x2 thin to solve that.

Thanks for that, even more pleased at the pricing now. :sweet:

From the looks of that compressor it would have interference problems with any longer stroke, it probably produces enough air with that amount of stroke anyway as I believe there is no air tank.

I just checked technicbricks from your link and see they are spamming those metal liftarms there too, if we wanted to play or build with metal parts we would use meccano. Dissapointed with that article, technicbricks just dropped in my rating..

It's not "there too" but rather everyone has picked up on the TechnicBRICKs article to talk about those metal parts. I'm not a big fan of those parts, but it's out there and custom made to integrate with LEGO.

More specifically it's made to intergrate with lego technic. I'm a purist but not every AFOL is a purist. So as a product designed to intergrate with technic and with appeal to many AFOLs I think it's perfectly reasonable to post an article regaurding these parts. A mod even said "i'm not trying to sell you anything" So I guess it's a case of if you like em, use em, if you don't, don't.

Now back to Blakbirds technical summery of the model:

Informative if it didnt have the links for items for sale, to me that is spamming. I see those on many Bricklink forum posts and it becomes annoying. IMO they are not lego so dont belong on lego sites

You got a good point there! But then if somebody were to produce some longer pneumatics I would hope TBs reports it so I can buy all of them!

Gotta love TechnicBRICKs!

Nobody is making you buy it. I found that post interesting and it made sense to include the links there. We occasionally talk about clone products here on EB too.

I have no use for the beams but might be interested if he makes more types of axles and gears, particularly gears that don't exist in Technic yet. I've wanted to see planetary ring gears and helical gears in Technic for ages now.

i hope they come back with pnematics in bigger sets. i will most likely NOT buy this one mainly due to it's lack of appearance and the fact that i already have a tractor/trailer set, which is discontinued last week.

are you disassembling every piece or disassembling a little bit to reduce sizes? is there a particular reason why you are disassembling every piece by piece if you are doing so?

Posted (edited)

Argh! After 25 years of playing with Lego I have finally had a set with a missing piece. But oh no, it wasnt a friction pin, or even a beam that was missing, but a piece of piping for the air system in this set! It was the short blue pipe to be precise, what a pain. I had been taking photos on my new D-SLR camera too and was going to do a nice long review of it, then BAM! I was stopped dead in my tracks!

So annoying. I have emailed Lego, hopefully they will send a replacement out sharpish!

I plan to move after my honeymoon in April and have around 400 built sets to take a part. Some of them will be a real pain like the harry potter ones that merge in to a bigger set :(

Bag and tag all the way!
