Blakbird Posted January 29, 2010 Author Posted January 29, 2010 Needs more logs. Well, weeks after writing this inspired post I've acquired about 300 more 2x2 round brown bricks. This is enough to fill the trailer to the top with logs. After doing so, do I think the model is improved as per my original comment? Turns out not. Fistly, the logs fall out of the trailer very easily because they are very smooth and there's almost no friction. Secondly, it turns out that the "claw" is very bad at actually picking up logs. It looks good, but it does not have the grip strength to hold the logs so they just fall out. The moral of the story: one log acceptable. Score: LEGO:1 Blakbird:0 Quote
CP5670 Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 (edited) The poor grip has always been an issue with Technic claw arms in general. I think the best way to fix this is to use small tires on the claw to act as a gripping surface. This is done on the 6-wheeled model in 8062 for example. Edited January 30, 2010 by CP5670 Quote

Blakbird Posted January 30, 2010 Author Posted January 30, 2010 Guess who's getting a new title! Aiiiighhhhh! Nooooooo! That proposed title actually sounds kind of dirty and is not appropriate for this site. Quote
Brickthus Posted February 1, 2010 Posted February 1, 2010 Aiiiighhhhh! Nooooooo! That proposed title actually sounds kind of dirty and is not appropriate for this site. You say that now... I got lumped with being a PaB price investigator just because I said how the prices are a bit out of proportion! I would have preferred "pneumatics guru, power functions guru, 8mm scale trains guru" or something equally prestigious, but these titles are not to enable us to show off! Back on topic, My pick-and-place robot has a pneumatic hand with better grip. It's good for 2x10 bricks, so 2x2 round bricks should be OK for it. I deliberately used parallelograms rather than single angular beams. Human finger grip depends on fingerprint (like rubber wheel rims) and squashiness of the finger pads (again like squashy rubber LEGO parts) I would add some 1x2 rubber liftarms with 2 cross holes if I were making a new robot hand today, because they would grip non-flat objects well. tomacwhite Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 I got my replacement tubing from Lego yesterday (quick delivery and free!) so I can continue with the build. I'll take some more photos and write a small review once I've completed it. Quote
