He was described like a small and very old man. Yes, the first Flitwick was small and old, but he looked like a goblin! I think I've also read that somewhere. Anyway, I actually like that new figure of Flitwick (nephew or not), it's a very nice and funny looking minifigure.

I have a Flitwick for myself, small, old and not being family of the goblins. :classic:

The reason they changed him was because JK said it was nothing like she pictured him. I'll try and fine the source for you :).

I remember her saying that, but I don't think it was the reason for the change. Might have been a factor, but definitely wasn't the sole reason. I remember Alfonso Cuaron saying something about wanting to change the look too. Also, it's from Wiki, but this here makes a lot of sense.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filius_Flitwick#Filius_Flitwick

According to Davis, the mustachioed character was originally not supposed to be Flitwick; Flitwick was absent from the POA script, but "the producer" (presumably David Heyman) added the new character (as the conductor of the school choir and orchestra, credited as "Choir Master") so that Davis could still appear in the film. Goblet of Fire director Mike Newell preferred the new look, "and from that moment, the character became known as 'Flitwick'."

So he was meant to be a completely different character who was later then named Flitwick. That's enough evidence, for me at least, that the two are separate characters, but related in some way (Uncle & Nephew just seems to fit, imo, and I still think I remember Davis saying something, at least jokingly, to that affect). Plus it's kind of cool, imo, that the movies have a character that wasn't in any of the books.

Anyways, back to the Lego's. Looking at the new castle set, I really like the amount of detail they were able to put into it. Specifically the Griffindor and Slytherin common rooms, which are small, but still nicely detailed. It even looks like the Griffindor fireplace has some fire in it. It's just too bad that the set doesn't come with any Slytherin students. Oh well, I've got a Draco minifigure from a PoA set I can put in there.

Found a Youtube video demonstrating the fireplace machanism (in the burrow set) & also shows how both Bellatrix and Fenrir have double-sided faces:

Wow, thanks legomaster! That mechanism is better than I thought. The way the green fire pops up when you activate it is very clever and looks just like in the movie!

For all those lazys out there, I've embeded the vid for you:

Actually the "new Flitwick" was referred to as Professor Flitwick, and Filius in HBP. So in my logic, I'd have to say that the "first Flitwick" is the uncanon character.

SWEET! I love it! I posted a comment btw. I'm JuniorModder.

Fireplace gimmick looks really good. Though the green flames sticker looks a little odd to me. I wasn't expecting Grayback to have a reversable head, but it is nice to see. I'll probably just use the crazed face. Fits his character perfectly, imo.

When was he ever referred to as as Filius? I know Harry called him Professor Flitwick in HBP, but I don't think he's been called Filius in any of the movies. Only thing that I've seen that connects the two, other than the same last name and being portrayed by the same actor, is that the charms teacher in the OotP video game is modeled after Flitwick #2. Which, imo, doesn't count as the video games haven't been completely cannon. As for the credits, for me at least, those don't factor in either. The naming of the character has varied from movie to movie.

In the end it's probably always going to be a bit of a gray area. Personally I consider them two separate characters. The first of which I consider the Charms teacher from the books, and the second I consider to be the choir teacher they added to the movies as a relative to the first.

Thanks for the video! I always love these kinds of play features.

I agree, trans-green flame pieces would have been much better.

...Preferably the trans. bright green from the Atlantis sets. That'd be pretty hot.

Of course, getting them to look like they're flaring up would be a bit difficult-- the new "plume" piece they often use wouldn't look any different from the orange flames, while the big flame piece would be too big to conceal in the floor. In fact, the need to conceal the green flames in the floor is probably why a sticker was used in the first place.

Found another video taking a look at the new sets he also mentions that Harry has a double-sided head with an angry expression (perfect for the fight scenes), I'm not sure how to put the video on here so I'll post the link :classic:

They really put alot of detail in this, but are they going to fix Harry's mouth problem?

I actually hope they fix that "problem". I know I'm nitpicking, but it looks really too close to his eyes. The figure looks very young and is useful for Harry in his first two years. But if he indeed has an angry face (useful for so many scenes), then I hope that one looks older/has his mouth not so close to his eyes. If someone knows what I mean.

After re-watching the scene from HBP, it's hard to hear, but he is called Filius. Slughorn says it when the trio is on their way to the Three Broomsticks. Still, it's hard for me to look at the two and imagine they are the same character. If it was a situation like Dumbledore (different actors), or a less major change of looks, like some other characters got (Hagrid, for example, got a slight change in looks), it would be easier to except the two as the same person.

Still, would be interesting to see a minifigure of movies 1-2 Flitwick. Mostly just to see what they could do with it.

The castle and Burrow look nice and big (bigger than they've looked in photos). It's nice to know that Harry is another minifigure that's going to have a double-sided head. Should be interesting to see who else has the feature. The second story to the castle's main tower still intrigues me. I'm slightly surprised we haven't seen what it does yet (it clearly does something). I still think it revolves to become the wall in CoS with the writing on it.

As for Harry's mouth issue, eh, personally it doesn't bother me, but part of me is definitely hoping that the final versions have the lower mouth.

Here's an "official" explanation (quoted from wikipedia):

...In the film adaptations, Flitwick is portrayed by Warwick Davis. Rowling said: "I must admit, I was taken aback when I saw the film Flitwick, who looks very much like a goblin/elf (I’ve never actually asked the filmmakers precisely what he is), because the Flitwick in my imagination simply looks like a very small old man." However, Rowling mentions on her official website that Flitwick is human, with "a dash of goblin ancestry." His on-screen appearance changes noticeably beginning in Prisoner of Azkaban, in which he takes on a more human and less elf-like look, with slicked-down dark hair and mustache.

After looking at these sets for the millionth time, I'm still excited! Such gorgeous figures! Very happy to hear Harry has an angry expression on one side, that will be useful. The Burrow is an absolute must have!

Okay, this is going to sound incredibly lazy but I can't find good pics of the sets anywhere, does anyone know or have al ink to where I can find them?

Well, I don't know what you define as "good", but the FBTB pics are pretty good IMO.

I just wish Luna would come in a smaller set as I really don't want the HW Express... Oh well - I guess I'll have to snag her singularly for outrageous prices once theses sets come out. If only they'd have put Neville or (almost) anyone else in there instead of another Ron.

It is a bit random but in Copmikes minifig review I noticed he stated that the rod used as a laser was shorter than the ordinary one, so we may have a shorter wands with the final finish on the sets...

:sceptic: I really hope you're right, the wands we have now are way too long. I also wish they had have made Harrys hair a little shorter (It's almost the size of a minifig head, so it's out of proportion) but the sets look pretty final to me.

I thought that'd be much better too when I saw it.

I hope they use these instead. The old ones were too big.

Agreed. I'm hoping they make another wave of sets after this one. That way they could put Luna in a smaller set, and also hopefully put the Draco and Ginny minifigures in smaller sets too (would be nice to have the new Draco and Ginny minifigures in their Hogwarts uniforms). Would also give them a chance to either update, or at least re-release, the Neville Longbottom minifigure.

As for the possibility of shorter wands, it would be nice, but it's not a deal-breaker for me.

Looking at the six new sets, I have a feeling that Hagrid's Hut is going to be my favorite one of them. It's sorta small, and not all that accurate, but it is nicely detailed. I like how it has things hanging from the ceiling. There's a broom, a turkey leg, what appers to be a fish, and something black that I can't exactly make out. The light-up fireplace feature should be interesting to see in-person.

Sadly, I think this is the last wave of LEGO Harry Potter we will ever see. They come out October, in time for Deathly Hallows Part 1. Part 2 will be out June/July 2011 I think? Can't remember. But anyway, theres not much time for the designers to make new sets in between them, and after Part 2, both the books and films are over... :cry_sad:

As for Hagrids hut, I agree, it does look nice. I'm certainly getting it for Ron (I don't intend to buy the train either, I have the old one) and Hagrid. Also for Hermione if she isn't in the Hogwarts set, but I think she is??
