gylman Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 3 months in the making (mostly waiting for parts to come from bricklink) Finally, my keychain collection display is done. It weighs 10 kg (without the keychains). Powered by 3 9V motors. Bottom layer rotates one way, middle layer rotates opposite way and the keychains at the top part (just above the last drum, not the very top) go up and down independently as the whole thing rotates, doing their little jiggly dance. The engineering is not particularly complex. The main problem was the weight! Getting a single 9V motor to turn 5 kg of lego is not easy. I used a solution I saw somewhere on lugnet, where the giant wheels from hailfire droid serve as the turntable ( you need to put some little wheels in there to act as ballbearings to minimize friction). base up and down layer 130 different keychains (I shudder to think of what I paid for some of these) Here is the big picture Whole enchilada Here are some samples keychains1 Keychains2 keychains3 keychains5 Adventurers (MY FAVS!) and some starwars And the very top layer is just insane - these old fabuland keychains are all mint. My life savings With two official Lego sterling silver keychains, a brick and a fig, at the top of it all. I am not sure if anyone saw when these went on auction on eBay a few month ago, but it was me who got them. I have not seen anything like these before or since. There is some guy on eBay now selling a clone trooper sterling silver keychain now and then, but it is not an official Lego product, just something that person made. Don't ask It's not the world's most complete collection, but it's not far short of it. And next...... I wait for the Batman keychain collection. Quote
5150 Lego Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 Awsome collection! I never knew lego had so many keychains. On a side note, have anymore pics of that loader on your shelf? Quote
gylman Posted January 26, 2006 Author Posted January 26, 2006 Re: the loader.... its just 8464 I think I mentioned on the forums here somewhere a few weeks ago that I wanted to build it out of spare parts. It was one of the few big Technic sets I don't have, but I could never justify spending the 100$ or more it typically fetches on eBay or Bricklink. So, I built it of spare parts last week. It is a fun build, much better than average, but ultimately the model doesn't do that much, so I 'm glad I didn't spend the money on eBay. Here's a brickshelf link to it (not mine). 8464 Quote

I don't want to admit what this collection cost, to myself or publicly, but lets just say that I could easily buy every UCS Star Wars set ever made for the cost of this this collection and display. Dark1 Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 OMM(Oh My Megablocks) Thats alot! :oD You should sell the thing (without keychains of course) on EBay with a starting bid of $1000 WOW! Quote

Cutty Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 all I can say to that is: WHOA! I love the Fabuland-keychains! I still have a solid handful of Fabu-people in my boxes here...most of which I don't even remember playing with as a child...oh the fond memories^^ Thumbs up gylman! Quote
Evil Willy Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 My goodness...But...to what purpose...I'm not a collector at all so to me I wouldnt do it, but if it hmm"Spins your gears" then alright! That is really awsome! Quote
gylman Posted January 26, 2006 Author Posted January 26, 2006 My goodness...But...to what purpose...I'm not a collector at all so to me I wouldnt do it, but if it hmm"Spins your gears" then alright! That is really awsome! LOL yes it "spun my gears". The construction of the display was a bit of a challenge, like any MOC is. The amount of Technic in there is quite significant (cost and weight), and getting it to move around and up and down reliably without burning out the motors or toppling over was not trivial. So, it's not just about collecting. But certainly, I am also a collector of Lego. For good sets, it would never occur to me take apart a complete set with box and instructions "for parts", although I have no reluctance to do so for Alpha Team, Lego Sports and various other less interesting sets. As to why on earth I would want to collect keychains..... that's a question I ask myself too... dunno. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but got a bit out of control. 8-| Quote
TheBlackDog Posted February 2, 2006 Posted February 2, 2006 That's a whole lotta keychains compared to my extremley gigantic collection of 1 keychain. Quote
