Athos Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 I started working on this modular building. Its loosely based on the old JC Penny's in my hometown and the clothing store in the town I live in now. Stage One, including experimental second floor and the beginnings of an interior Stage Two, including the finished second floor. Steve Quote

Steve I like the inverted bay entry, and how you solved the asymmetric issues with that design. I attempted a similar entry and ended up making the building too wide to keep it symmetric. I like your approach better. Keep us posted. Edited January 12, 2010 by Follows Closely Quote
lightningtiger Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 Nice start to your department store 'Athos' ! Please keep going - love to see the rest of the interior done ! Quote
Rick Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 This will be a thread to watch. I like what I'm seeing so far... Quote
Holodoc Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 Nice building so far, Steve! In my opinion the first floor needs a bit more variety. I don't know if it's based on the original though, so you may want to keep it that way, but for me it lacks ornamental stuff. It looks very plane and "in-line". I noticed you try to break that by using the round bricks at the end and the logged bricks in the midlle, but still. The heavily use of the small windows play a role, too. I know, a lot of buildings look that way, but are these really the best buildings to make a Lego copy of? Last of all I would place the male minifig with the blue coat different. He looks towards to wall and can hardly be seen from the outside. But all that aside I'd love to see more pics of your w-i-p. Quote
I Scream Clone Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 Off to a great start Steve, the few things bothering me is the fact that the entrance is off center with two round brick towers on one side and one tower on the other. Another thing is the black baseplate for the 1st floor, perhaps raising the black baseplate on the first floor up or thickening it would give a stronger thicker floor like appearance to the different levels. I also find all the little windows a bit plain and distracting too, perhaps some snot style windows using 1 x 2 clear bricks would allow for a different look, or even half setting windows in with jumper bricks. You could also break up the all white of the frames with tan or grey plates between. Probably need a reference for me to make all these calls, when you probably have the design spot on already Quote
Athos Posted January 12, 2010 Author Posted January 12, 2010 There really isn't any reference I'm trying to copy exactly, so your suggestions are most helpful. Steve Quote
prateek Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 Looking good! I like the 2nd floor windows Quote
MatthewUSA Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 Athos, your MOC is looking good. Certainly looks like a building you would see in Downtown USA. Definitely keep us posted on the progress. Model On!! Quote
BlueBard Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 Nice start, indeed! Look forward for the final result Quote
curtisrlee Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 Wow, very good! It looks like a store in MY town! Quote
wooootles Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 Love what you've done here. -Diagonal windows = very nice -Nice choice of colors, tan is very modular-friendly. -Ceiling height for the 1st floor too low, considering its a dept. store. Two or three more brick heights would make it better Quote
Athos Posted January 18, 2010 Author Posted January 18, 2010 OK, here is version three. I added some more color, raised the second floor, made the building symetrical and added some architectural details. http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/Athos/In...deptstore1c.jpg http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/Athos/In...deptstore2c.jpg Steve Quote
Rick Posted January 19, 2010 Posted January 19, 2010 (edited) I really like the color scheme you're using (tan/dark blue) and the work on the second floor windows looks promising. The stairs leading up there look a little 'plain' for a store though. Some railings might do the trick. Or you could try something like this (hope you get what I mean): -------------- ----+ +---- | | Edited January 19, 2010 by Rick Quote
