Hobbes Posted March 24, 2007 Posted March 24, 2007 I've seen a "Citizen" with only 52 posts (Mike F). Where? Quote
Eurobricks Emperor Bonaparte Posted March 24, 2007 Eurobricks Emperor Posted March 24, 2007 Where? Now he's gone. Must have been something wrong with my eyes ;-) Quote
simonwillems Posted March 27, 2007 Posted March 27, 2007 I thought that by reaching a number of 300 posts one would become a different rank, like fellow, but after reading this thread again it seems you have to have at least 500 posts before it changes again (to Count?) :-( Quote

Tully Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 What I don't get is that there is a lot of fellows around now... Quote
Hobbes Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 What I don't get is that there is a lot of fellows around now... What is it you don't get about it? There have been 3 new fellows lately, before that no one has been admitted for quite some time... Quote
Tully Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 What is it you don't get about it? There have been 3 new fellows lately, before that no one has been admitted for quite some time... well, on every page, there is at least 1 fellow. That is what I don't get. Try this topic. It has one on every page. Quote
Hobbes Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 well, on every page, there is at least 1 fellow. That is what I don't get. What do you mean by "on every page"? Quote

Tully Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 I even wish there was more easier ways to get promoted on this site. That would make me really happy. I thought that by reaching a number of 300 posts one would become a different rank, like fellow, but after reading this thread again it seems you have to have at least 500 posts before it changes again (to Count?) :-( To knight. :-) and that is a lot of posts. It's taking me forever to get 100, and I really want to get promoted. Quote
Hobbes Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 Firstly, don't double post if it isn't really necessary. There's an "Edit" button. Secondly, why is promotion so important? This website is about LEGO fun. The ranks are kind of an award to those who contribute (not spam!) and are supposed to be fun, not a competition. If these promotion questions don't stop soon, we'll just kill the ranks and everybody stays "member". We done now? Quote
Starwars4J Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 Well, I wouldn't even call it a reward. I look at the ranking system as a way to show who is dedicated to the site. That way if someone's spreading news, or answers a question from someone, their dedication to the site will be seen. It's not a reward for posts, and you shouldn't be in a rush to get more. Because...well, that would mean you haven't earned it. I've never understood why people always want to be higher ranks...it's not like you even get anything from having a higher rank :-/ Quote
Norro Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 If I may intrude in a thread I really don't like X-D : I personally don't like post count/status correlation, but knowing who is around regularly/contributes in general (not necesarily just to traffic ratings ;-) ) is handy in its own way. I think the fellows group is a nice way to do one without the other. The reason there is a fellow 'on every page' is more to do with the fact that they read/post in a lot of threads than the number of fellows as a percentage of members... God Bless, Nathan Quote
captaintau Posted March 29, 2007 Author Posted March 29, 2007 FWIW (which isn't a lot, really) I'm a member of several forums (all bar this one are Martial Arts forums) and this forum has the slowest rank-increase system of all of them. This is NOT at all a criticism - everyone does things differently and sees different merits in different post-counts. Just an observation. I personally like having more ranks. They're fun, nothing more. I certainly don't put any importance on them, but its nice getting a new rank symbol that's just a little recognition of dedication and input. I'll post on here at the same rate whether I get a new rank every ten posts or every ten thousand posts. Just as a point of interest, an example of how Martial Arts forums often works. Along the lines of: Newbie = White belt 10 posts = yellow belt 20 posts = orange belt 50 posts = green belt 100 posts = blue belt 200 posts = purple belt 350 posts = brown belt 500 posts = Black Belt and so on, with various honorifics, generally reflecting teaching or political status (e.g. 1000 posts = Renshi (a teaching qualification) or 2000 posts = Daimyo (a Samurai retainer) So, more ranks, quicker promotion. This is my personal preference. Quote

Asuka Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 I don't know what spam is. Spam.... ;-) Useless messages, provided often by people with bad manners.... Quote
Hobbes Posted March 30, 2007 Posted March 30, 2007 So, more ranks, quicker promotion. This is my personal preference. Fair enough, but what do you do when you're out of ranks at 2000 posts? We have members who are way past that and a few who'll be there soon. Posting frequency is quite high and we don't want to maintain, I dunno, 100 different ranks (which?!) just to please members every 100 posts. We want members to stay around longer and high limits are supposed to be an incentive to continue contributing longterm. Quote
El Bucanero Posted March 30, 2007 Posted March 30, 2007 This might be a spammy post, but why the hell are those ranks so important to you?! Mr Tiber Quote
Vader Posted March 30, 2007 Posted March 30, 2007 You know as so many people seem to be bitchin and complaining i say we change the fellows groups to VIP's and return everyone to member status, members will then only be granted vip status due to contribution and voting by the vip's themselves and not post counts. Seems to me we have far to many members posting crap just to get their ranks changed, oh and a friendly warning to anyone doing so i will return your post counts to 0 and change your rank and if that dosent work then ill chamber you. Quote
Rayden Posted March 30, 2007 Posted March 30, 2007 You could just remove the displaying of post counts. And instead of basing your ranks on postcounts, how about basing them on time in the community? Someone who has been around for 2 years, but doesn't post a lot, should deserve more credit and respect then a newbie with an average postcount of 10/day, even though this newbie might have a 'higher' rank. As a former forum admin myself I found that this really cuts back on spamming since people stop caring about raising their postcount. Quote
xwingyoda Posted March 30, 2007 Posted March 30, 2007 I don't know what spam is. Basically all the posts you did in this thread !! I am seriously not in the mood to "educate" you on what spam is !! Either you meditate and think before you post or you will see where it leads you !! We should demote in rankings all bitchin' members !! seriously !! *yoda* Quote

That sounds like a very reasonable solution. Sure we'd lose some members, but only the spammers trying to get a high rank. Quote
