BB Code acronyms are a very cool feature that I have seen very little use of on Eurobricks. What is an acronym, or more specifically, what is a BB Code acronym?According to Dictionary.com, an acronym is quote "a word formed from the initial letters or groups of letters of words in a set phrase or series of words". A BB Code Acronym... Wait. First of all, what is BB Code? Well, BB Code is two pairs of brackets, of which are opening which starts with [textgoeshere] and closing which ends with a forward slash (/) and looks like [/textgoeshere]. When text is typed between those two brackets, the text in the two brackets specifies the chosen effect (see here for a list of examples.

Acronyms are a little known feature of BB code. Their brackets are [-acronym="textgoeshere"-] and [-/acronym-], sans the dashes. When used, a word will appear as normal text, but when you hover over it with your mouse, text will appear! Here is an example:

Hover your cursor here.

How do you create acronyms? Well, it's a piece of cake if you can follow these simple steps  :

1.posttemplate.jpg

2.dropdown.jpg

3.textbox.jpg

4.Post your message.

5. Done! Look above to see how to view your newly created acronym.

You now know how to post acronyms! Please remember to abide by the Site Guidelines when using them. :classic:

What do you think of this guide? Please comment! :sweet:

Let's try it...

Also,

EDIT: It does! Cool, this is a feature that I'll be using on some of my pics in my future reviews (it's also useful for having descriptions on pics in your sig without taking up any extra space!). :sweet:

Using it as 'alt'/'hover' text isn't actually what the 'acronym' BBcode is designed to do, but it sure works in that way....

Thank you for the guide (even if you are taking a break), but now I want to know what Center, CODEBOX, and SPOILER are. I think I know what Topic Link and Post Link means.

Well just try them out... you'll see soon enough, but it itsn't too hard to guess by their names, there's even a guide here...

centered text

Here's your spoiler

(code box was a little too annoying to try out here...)

I thought this was common knowledge but not used because most people wouldn't leave their mouse over every word on instinct.

I like this feature which is basic BB code but I don't really see the use of it in regular posts.

But I suppose it's good infor for the posters to know about in case they do want to use it for something.

I would recommend that you use it on your thumbnail pics for your reviews in your signature. That way, people can mouse over the picture to know the name of the set that the review is on.

This doesn't work for me. I'm using Firefox on a Mac. All the other BB Codes work fine for me though.

Certainly the best use of it in a forum. I suppose it would act similar to title text on an image anchor in HTML.

Can I please retract my previous statement. That's a great idea!!!

No, it does work, it just has a second lag, like I have to pause the mouse. Interesting feature, but I doubt I'll use it much.

Interesting tutorial, Legoliner Pilot. In regular posts, I can't find much use, but I think it might work well in signatures and reviews. I see that Big Cam has already updated his signature, and I think I will soon.

Thanks.

My dig is loaded with it now. :classic:

Cool nice tutorial.

Just testing something as well:

HEY

The main point of codebox code is to allow you to type other codes without it being interpreted as code.

ie.

[b]not bolded[/b]

[i]not italicized[/i]

The use would be in a tutorial (much like this) where you want to show the code used, and not have it activated.

<Edit> I have no idea how to use codebox

Looks like Legoliner Pilot helped start a new trend!

According to the BB Code help page that Rick linked to, the codebox is just a version of "code" that allows you to scroll down (used for huge amounts of scripting).

Check this out:

Eehm, you can test all these BBcodes by pressing the Preview button instead of the Post button when you type a post (don't we have a testing thread somewhere?). Plus there's examples on the page I linked to earlier.

You have it right on.

The only point of the code box is to show the html coding behind something.

Basically the code box is like a text document, no html works. it's great for developers to share code over the internet especially forums, otherwise if they posted their code anywhere that HTML is accepted, it' just show up as what they designed it to, not the actual code behind it.
