Bobskink Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 Cool you liked A New Hope. The sequals are actually better I think, so you won't be dissapointed . The dissapointment will come when you watch the prequels Quote
RXBandit Posted February 11, 2010 Author Posted February 11, 2010 hahaha, i wish i knew offhand. the DVD i had a Limited Edition sticker on it. it's two discs, the second one just bonus material. my DVD was released in 2004 (not very limited, is it?) and is 123 minutes. don't know if that helps at all. i'm gonna watch Episode V tonight i hope, as there's two feet of snow outside and i'm not goin anywhere anytime soon. Tereglith Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 Ah, two feet of snow is very appropriate for the start of Empire. You'll enjoy it. Can you remember what it looked like when the Death Star blew up on your DVD? Was there a ring going out from the center, or not? A ring means it's special edition, no ring means it's original release. Quote
Clone OPatra Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 I don't know who could remember a thing like that the first time they watched a movie! 2004 sounds like the redone versions with added CG and stuff like that. I think that version came out around 04, but maybe it was later. Certainly wasn't original theatrical, since that hadn't been available until the special DVDs a couple years ago that had the theatrical versions that came out certainly after 04. Quote

Hey, I conidered asking if he remembered any Dewbacks, but decided that the Death Star scene would be more memorable In any case, a bit of research has found that, if released in 2004, they were the Special Editions. The boxed sets that contain the original editions were released in 2006. Quote

RXBandit Posted February 19, 2010 Author Posted February 19, 2010 well, i went back and watched again (third time now) and there's a ring when it explodes. my girlfriend wants to watch the next two with me, as she was so surprised at how much i liked A New Hope; if we don't wind up watching it tonight though, i'm gonna watch it by myself or with whoever else will join me. def Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 well, i went back and watched again (third time now) and there's a ring when it explodes. I don't mind the 'new' versions. For the most part, the effects scenes don't overwhelm the flicks. Basically the bookends and chapter intervals have effects, but not the main part of the films. I think all three of the originals hold up really well. The story structure is tight, the pacing is good, and the performances are decent. Ford is especially great in Empire, though Hamil is weak in Jedi, maybe all of them. My wife has seen (and forgotten, I'm sure) Star Wars and Empire, but hasn't seen Jedi, so maybe we'll rent it this weekend. I can remember being seven years old on the playground, talking about the new movie (Jedi). There was no Internet, and nobody knew anything much, but it was talked about a lot. I remember kids saying it was called Revenge of the Jedi. It was hype before the hype-machine was in full swing like it is today. I saw Jedi four times in the theater, and wasn't bored a bit, though my mind was blown that you could see a movie four times, and it was a given at that time that all Star Wars stuff was amazing. Maybe I suffered from the hype, but there was a lot of good stuff in that. More soon, from you or from me. I'm thinking I should have my wife rewatch Empire before dipping into Jedi though, since she's forgotten it. Quote
Brickus Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 You're going to enjoy Empire, I only recently watched it after getting the 2009 Echo Base Set, and still loved it. Off topic: 4 times def I saw Avatar six times and wasn't bored. Quote
def Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 I saw Avatar six times and wasn't bored. No comment! Quote
Bobskink Posted February 22, 2010 Posted February 22, 2010 6 times is really a lot in sush a short time. But is shows that it's not a bad movie. Still, I liked it very mush, I don't think it has the rewatsh ability like the old Star wars movies. Quote
Clone OPatra Posted February 22, 2010 Posted February 22, 2010 Let's please not turn this into an Avatar discussion. This is about seeing SW movies for the first time, so it's fine to talk about how many times you saw SW the first time it came out. There's an Avatar thread for Avatar, and a new thread for watching movies over and over. Quote

ILikePi Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 Taking all of your guys' advice, I watched my first Star Wars movie today (of the original six; the only other one I watched was Star Wars: The Clone Wars) - episode IV, A New Hope. It was a very cool movie! I thought that it was going to disappoint me after finishing it (mostly because of how old it is - 1977!), but it was very interesting! The stormtroopers are as cool as I thought they would be, as well as Han, Luke, and the rest of the main characters. I also like how Obi-Wan/Ben's spirit was still out there and speaking to Luke throughout the movie. One other thing I enjoyed was that the movie had a whole bunch of the memorable scenes I see in other places often, like the Jedi mind trick and trash compactor. I can't wait to watch The Empire Strikes Back! Quote
ILikePi Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 (edited) Today I just finished watching The Empire Strikes Back. Another great movie! I didn't know that there would be so much inside this episode - the battle of Hoth was much shorter than I thought! The tauntauns and wampa look very odd (good thing the LEGO versions look much better!), and all the vehicles and scenes are just as I thought they would be. It also had some of the memorable scenes, like Han being frozen in carbonite and using the tow cable on the snowspeeder to take down the AT-AT. And I'm starting to see how marketing works...now I want to buy some Hoth sets and I get minifigs of the main characters I don't have - C-3PO, a non chrome black Darth Vader (although his helmet is pretty shiny), Lando, a Hoth Han and Leia, and a Cloud City Leia. Now, time to watch Return of the Jedi! EDIT: There was one thing I didn't understand, though: what was up with the fake Vader on Dagobah? Was that a robot or a figment of Luke's imagination? Edited April 6, 2010 by ILikePi Quote
Oky Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 What? You hadn't seen any real SW movies before this, Pi?! That really surprises me, considering you have a SW tag, a couple of SW reviews, and a Shadow trooper as your avatar! Well, I guess it's good that you are finally learning what you have been supporting all this time. Quote
YG-49 Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 EDIT: There was one thing I didn't understand, though: what was up with the fake Vader on Dagobah? Was that a robot or a figment of Luke's imagination? It was Luke confronting the fact that he has to fight Vader. Quote
CMP Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 You guys have to understand the prequels were not about creating new stories or anything, it was just to explain the origins of everyone and everything. Without them, several hundred fans would have killed themselves over 'How the Tauntaun did Anakin turn into Darth Vader?!' We never would have learned how Boba Fett became a legacy, we never would've learned how the Emperor came to wield the power of the Senate, and never would have discovered what the Clone Wars was, It was only mentioned once in the trilogy. Without the prequels, we'd be completely in the dark of how anything in the original trilogy came to be. Quote
simonjedi Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 (edited) I've obviously seen the films many times, but when i first watched ROTJ i though the line "Many Bothans died to bring us this information." I honestly thought it was about one guy called "Many Bothans". I thought everyone was shocked and upset because he was a cool guy. Edited April 8, 2010 by simonjedi Quote

An interesting revieuw of Atack of the clones and good explenation why we don't need to know al what you just said. Notte be offensive, but what's next, a prequel of the prequel? Because we need to know were Jedi's come from, were Palpatine learned of the Dark Side... The prequel was only about Jedi action and money making. Quote
