Henri Posted February 8, 2010 Posted February 8, 2010 Iain, I will be watching this video many times until I can get my hands on this superb set. Can't wait till Lego makes it available. One tip though to all of us here.....we should stop being enthusiastic, Lego is watching and.....price is not stated yet. So, example of a better reply: I hate GE, one set I will definitely not get..... LOL. Quote
mattlegodude Posted February 8, 2010 Posted February 8, 2010 you should really do a review. I didn't notice the bill board. what's on the second floor? Quote
Iain Posted February 8, 2010 Author Posted February 8, 2010 (edited) That was pretty darn good for your first try, How did you get that set already, I didn't even know it was out yet . Oh well, great video. I heard 'on the grapevine' that the Lego shop in Milton Keynes was selling them early so I phoned up on Saturday and they reserved me one. My mate phoned them an hour later to get one himself and he was told he could not have one and they had been taken off the shelves as they were not supposed to be selling them until March!! Ras 74 Posted February 8, 2010 Posted February 8, 2010 Thanks for a really great video review Iain! Even though I already decided that I will buy this set, this made me want it even more. It really is a huge set with lots of great parts and nice details in it. Quote
Iain Posted February 8, 2010 Author Posted February 8, 2010 Absolutly brilliant, simply one of the most amazing things, please if you have any other sets please do more, me and the wife , who isn't a major lego fan unlike me , sat in raptures the whole time. Great work.Heres hoping you dig out some old instructions and work us through your whole collection the music made it ,good choice uplifting , and building to a cresendo to match the build , good on every level . Another bonus is it enables a pauper like me to experience the build , the knife popping the selotape heightning the anticipation the spilling of the contents , then the pan over the awesome brick count. I liked the pause and pan between floors allowing us to glimpse the detail , I also like the build of the smaller details in shot but to the side. Then the final 360 showing us the elements on all the sides of the finished build. IMO great work , many thanks Thanks for the great comments - I may try in future to build something in time lapse brick by brick. I now have all 5 modular building sets so I have plenty to chose from! Quote
The Eye Posted February 8, 2010 Posted February 8, 2010 Amazing time lapse, especially for your first try. You have, however, convinced me not to buy this set, not by what you did, but because I don't like the set as much as I thought I would. It's nice, but I can't afford anything over 200$. Looks like I'll stick to the Imperial Flagship. Quote
WhiteFang Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 Great video review, and welcome to Eurobricks! Now, I need to tell myself to sit still and watch the entire video. Quote
sonicstarlight Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 Brilliant video! I was trying to be good and not watch so that the build would still be a bit of a surprise, but I caved in and couldn't look away after I started watching. Quote
dabulls03 Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 ... That was amazing. That was so in depth that I felt like I was building the set myself! The Grand Emporium looks like an amazing set for parts. My favorite part is the sky light on the roof, which I didn't even realize was there until now. Quote
Svelte Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 Thanks for this video! You really get a sense of the build in 3D Can't wait for this set to be released! Quote
lightningtiger Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 My turn to say thanks 'Iain' for the video. The more I see this set - the more I can do with it ! I can't wait until the plans are available so I can also design a classic style department store or at least a drapery store. I'm a conformist! ! Quote

Thanks for the great comments - The design of the building lends itself nicely to being modified. There is enough space to put in another esculator on each floor, or to put extra levels on if more than one set is purchased. There is also enough room to alter the floor layouts and to put in extra items for the mini-figs to buy! Edited February 9, 2010 by Iain Quote

Another esculator, yep that's what I was thinking ! Hey, may be we could have a challenge at some stage to create the best department store ever, so we can see how tall it can be made, to the different goods and departments that can be in it. Like say a beauty salon or cafe eh ? I'm a conformist! ! Quote
chris1 Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 Hey lain nice video, I have never build a big set like that before wow, can I ask you a question. ? How long did It take you to build. ? The whole thing took me about 7 hours but that was with a couple of breaks to take some shots etc. Quote
Iain Posted February 9, 2010 Author Posted February 9, 2010 (edited) I've slightly modified the layout to show how you can have 2 escalators side by side on each floor Edited February 9, 2010 by Iain Quote
Fugazi Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 I've slightly modified the layout to show how you can have 2 escalators side by side on each floor Looks good after a fashion, although I feel it's overkill now as escalators take up half the floor area. What would be amazing would be to use 2x Grand Emporium sets and combine them into a double sized shop, and have the up and down escalators on each level. That would be an expensive MOD though! Quote
ACCURATEin Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 Thank you for putting this video together. I'm even more excited about the release of this great set. Quote
Badsneaker Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 Thanks for taking the time to put this together. I can't wait to get this set. Much better with 2 escalators. TLG probably wanted it to be as spacious as possible maybe thats why they only put 1 in? Quote
Grimmy Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 That was a great video! I left you some comments using my YouTube account. I'm jealous that your Lego store has it. We don't have it in the U.S. yet. I don't have any of these big buildings yet but I definitely want one. I will get one someday. Quote
GRogall Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 Thanks for the great comments - I may try in future to build something in time lapse brick by brick. I now have all 5 modular building sets so I have plenty to chose from! Great Vid! So how about a picture of all of them together! Quote
Klaus-Dieter Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 Thank you very much for this great mmultimedia-based review, Iain! This building and its interior look really  ! Cons: -pirate shirt for the boy (it does really not look city-like) -very, very small dollhouse -golden tumbler for the ice-cream (I know that these days kids get nearly always what they want and that is really ok - but a golden tumbler is imo too much! ) -stange and old-styled looking scooter Pros: -a lot of awesome accessory -excellent architecture - esp. the dark green marquees above the display windows -totally awesome interior design - esp. the chandelier, the escalators and the mannequins It's really a shame that this is a CC-styled building and not a City set with open backwalls since we City fans do want a mall/shopping center/big store, too! As for the scooter I'd prefer this my version of a modern city scooter. Klaus-Dieter Quote
Grimmy Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 I found another video in case anyone is withdrawing and needs more Grand Emporium views to get their fix. Quote

Wout Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 (edited) Thank you for the nice video. Could you tell me wich colour has the baseplate? I couldn't tell from the video if it's tan or white. Edit: I saw in an other video the baseplate is tan. Edited February 11, 2010 by Wout Quote
