Hello everyone,

So this is quite simple, over in the Historical forum, Castle exists , yet it wasn't always exactly historical

Now TLG switched back to more a "real" castle theme. I use "real" very loosely as there still elements of fantasy in it

So I pose the question to the Space forum. What do you guys like better?

Fantasy Space- this is like aliens, laser cannons, etc... :alien:

Dare I say Star Wars-ish?

Space Exploration- Sound boring huh? I don't mean like modern day, space shuttles and such. Space is cool because it contains fantasy elements that are represented in futuristic stuff. That is all good, but this is meant toward just exploration of space. Much Like classic space did  . Moon bases, land rovers, spaceships etc

My vote just pulled it towards exploration.

I think that the exploration was really nice. And I have fond memories of that period.

It probably shifted when they started out making everything balanced with good and bad guys. Because I am into Star Wars aswell that wasn't necessary for me because I get my rivalry from that.

So I would definately like to see them go back the the discovery of Space. There can still be a lot of imagination using in that.

All real deal space has to offer is 30 years of doing nothing at all besides sending some guys to the moon, and perhaps the mars rover. There has been so many mars sets lately that I'd rather not see mars in at least 5 years... Anything else like exploring unknown planets is not real deal space anymore and it is quite fantasious.

I think city used to have some realistic space elements. A real shuttle sounds like a good set to have every once in a while.

Why can't we have both? aliens and humans working together exploring through space while fighting space pirates or something like that a few times.

Hi

In my point of view, all the creature can be present on the same planet.

I just complete the buildinf of my Alien Head Quarter and just begin my Space Police Base.

Some other building will be added with different color and creature.

We can like both style I think

I would like more of an exploration space theme, similar to Firefly.

If the Minifig race is all there is, and the President of Legoland commissions a space exploration team (like the old Classic Town space shuttle sets) it would be a great hint at things to come. Give it a year, then launch a new Town subtheme like Moon Base or something. That story could go any one of a number of ways, Maybe the mayor of moon base becomes politically corrupt and starts enslaving other minifigs to work in the asteroid mines or something.

They can also just skip that whole development stage and just fast forward 2,000 years. By then, space travel will likely be a routine event for the human race, so why not minifigs? Maybe there's no life out there, maybe there is?

Personally I prefer fantasy space, just for the cool aliens and giant motherships.

But you have to think about space exploration's relevance to modern society. Space travel was a huge thing after the first lunar landing and several years after that, but when we discovered there were no inhabitable planets or alien life, interest went down. Big floating chunks of rock or gas giants really aren't that interesting. In popular culture there isn't much about discovery of new planets, it's all about aliens invading earth and humanity coming together to stop them. "Space" is no longer about space shuttles and landing on planets for no reason other than exploring, it's about killing aliens that either try to invade earth or defend their own planet. Space Police has sucessfully capitalized on this with 'bad' aliens and 'good' humans, and until society changes it's view of space, I don't think Lego should either.

I prefer the fantasy elements. Good vs Evil, and all that. I loved Classis Space as a kid but the advenet of Blacktron and then the LOM stuff, StarWars and finally SPIII all provide much more entertainment value for me. I still like the neo "classic" pricinples (moonbases etc) but i'll take the conflict any day.

Exploration in the Classic Space sense wasn't particularly realistic. Even the Classic Space ships often seemed to be heavily armed, but they just had nobody to fight with. "Real deal space" would better describe the Launch Command, Space Port and Discovery themes.

Like others, I like a mix of both exploration and conflict. You can certainly have both. I think the Exploriens theme was kind of like this, and the original Aquazone themes also come to mind even though they were not in space.

I have mixed feelings about this.

I really liked the Lego Space sets from the 1980's through the mid-90's. While they did have themes (Blacktron, Futuron, MTron, etc), these sets left more to the imagination than a lot of the sets that came after it, like the Star Wars series.

Half the fun of the old Lego sets was making up adventures and stories, much like KDog does with the Space comic. While I really like the wider variety of minifigures that the newer fantasy sets bring, I can't help but think that the sets are more limiting simply because they already have decades of backstory already built in.

I like fantasy space, because real space isn't sci fi anymore. But if we are talking about a believable real (i.e. no aliens) futuristic theme, then i'm ok.

It'd be cool to have a futuristic modular building series after the current modular building ends.

I don't know which one to choose...

I would love to see a remake of exploriens but with mix of aliens heads and minifigs heads...

I like the fantasy stuff. If your explanation of Real Deal Space was modern day stuff like Space Shuttles and Lunar Rovers, I would've voted for that. I don't really like the Classic Space :sceptic:

It is not specified, what is "real deal" and what must be "fantasY". I'm waiting for real deal but not only with exploring mars (In my opinion "life on mars" was the best of all mars, despite the fact that there were only 2 of them :D) but with something like new worlds/planets. Ice Planet 2002 (born in 1993) was something fresh, after the times of generic spacemen from Blacktron/M-Tron/futuron/any-other-tron-but-not-the-disney-tron. And of course Space Police - which we are having now. Well, aliens nowadays are having many, many refferences to old themes. But suprisingly there are no human representatives. Sad future for men race xD Overruled by flat-headed-fish-eyed-grey monsers with their tounges on top. So the real deal changed into fantasy. Or M tron/futuron/blacktron was fantasy from the beginning? It is just too confusing. But we are having sculpture, showing clasic-space pioneer. Ack, too much data...

From the different angle, space port, space exploration etc. was quite good. But I don't think spaceport will be back - NASA ends the mission with Space Station and I don't know if it will be intresting enough. But in about 10 years old shuttles will be replaced with new ones... then maybe they will be in LEGO as a sub-series of City?

So after all, it looks like I prefer fantasy :D Truth is I really, really want to see Ice Squidman from Ice Planet 2222 (or how many years have passed...) and any other human representatives among civilians or bad aliens from m-tron/blacktron/futuron/robo raiders/unitron/Insectoids/UFO?

Exploriens will back, I tell you that xD

  • 1 month later...

will i like both :D so hard to choose .. I would like to see Aliens (as in the movie) :) in lego too :D I didn´t like any theme after unitron so I vote for classic as the new space sets sux and only star Wars has the quality I want to see new m:trons and blacktrons out there in new shape :P

why we can't we do both? Exploration but there are also enemies occasionally like an alien empire or something. We could keep the sets mostly exploration based but with some sets involving aliens.

I have no preference-- the amount I like the theme really never depended on whether it was "real deal" or fantasy, but rather on other factors. For instance, I really liked Launch Command, Exploriens, and Spyrius, but didn't like Space Port because the color scheme bothered me, it was less genuine-seeming than Launch Command, and the Light and Sound gimmick was obnoxious (even back then when I was a kid). Mars Mission was cool, but the story was not compelling, and I skipped most of the sets-- Space Police, on the other hand, is currently one of my favorite themes. So it's not the type of Space theme that really drives me to buy the sets, but rather the general factors that make a good theme to begin with.

I'd love to see another "real deal" space theme, although I personally don't think that will happen until the successor to the Space Shuttle gets a lot of media attention. Real-world space programs are developing, but as far as I've seen we're losing the huge childhood emphasis on space exploration that there was in the space shuttle's heyday.

THERE MUST BE CONFLICT!

*Cough* sorry, lasers and aliens are neccesary.

I voted for Real Deal Space.

But I take that to include the early 90s themes like Ice Planet and Spyrius... Based on that though, I prefer things be left more open ended. Star Wars for example is just too established for me to really want to play with, Being an AFOL, play means pose sets and THINK about scenarios. Even so, this has kept me from buying any Star Wars LEGO.

We actually still get variations on Real Deal Space now. Take Power Miners for instance, they are basically exploring the underground looking for deposits of valuable/rare material, sometimes running into the native rock monsters. I think there can still be conflict within a theme, but I dont want the story to already be set in stone, haha, pun not intended. Discovering native lifeforms are after all part of exploration, so I'd be up for more space explorers happening upon huge space dinosaurs or something :D

There ya go :)
