I've settled into two themes, namely trains and town/city. However, I actually regard these two as one theme. This does not mean that I never buy sets from other themes. I must still get Medieval Market Village. And I've recently bought the Red Beard Runner.

I like to dabble in other themes from time-to-time, but for the most part I'm exclusively castle. Even when I do venture outside of my collecting norms, I still look in part for bricks that fit with my theme (i.e., Prince of Persia looks appealing simply because it blends very well with the castle theme). I do buy certain exclusives and will by the odd non-castle set every once in a while, but for the most part I am a castle only sort of person. As MOCing is my priority, I simply don't get a nice enough ratio of useable bricks when purchasing other themes.

The first half of my LEGO life was 100% dedicated to space. Then space... died so I moved to bionicle, then bionicle canisters got repetitive and my money/space were no longer helping so I had a dark age. Recently I recovered from the dark age and went to bionicle by default... Nowadays I can't help but see the invention of the 'constraction' word as a very, very bad sign. Also I've been really liking some stuff . So I am just a set purchase away from moving on back to "system" again. My current plan is to have an eclectic Creator + Space + Star wars collection so I could do many sci-fi stuff.

I started with Town back in the pre-dark ages. I guess that's my main theme but I bounced around all over the place since coming back. Now I have City, Pirates, Star Wars, Technics, Creator, Castle... If it looks interesting to build and on sale, I'll get it. :classic:

Yes, I have consolidated quite a bit. I mostly focus on Toy Story, Harry Potter, and Clone Wars sets. But I usually buy some small sets from other themes too, just to have some variety in parts and minifigs for MOCs.

I focus only on none-licensed themes, but I mainly focus on Toy Story. :classic:

That doesn't make any sense.

From now on I am only purchasing Castle themed sets. And sets that can pass off in that era. I have 5 Manta Warriors for aquatic civilization. Although that isn't much of a civilization. I have a few pirates, and I will get more as time goes on to act as pirates/bandits and civilians. Prince of Persia theme looks like it will be great for getting assassins and persian warriors.

When I came out of my dark age about eighteen months ago, I'd buy small sets from any line, just for the fun of building them, but my focus was Exo-Force. Exo-Force is gone, replaced by Power Miners as my primary theme, but I also like Toy Story and Agents, and I still buy the occasional small set from any line if it looks like an entertaining build or has cool parts. Biggest set not from one of my main lines would be the blue Creator motorbike, the orange City bin lorry or the Mach 5 from Speed Racer, to give you an idea of how far into those themes I might go.

So no. I have favourite lines but I don't ignore the others completely. I've yet to buy anything from Castle or Star Wars.

When I was a kid, I eventually settled for town.

I have castle sets and (a lot of) pirate sets (the 1989 "series"),

but in the end I liked town (including 9V trains) the best.

Ever since I came out of my dark age, I try to stick to one (sub)theme to collect:

I (try to) collect all the modulars, which I consider town(related).

But I also buy the occasional city set that would look great with my old town sets like City Corner

I'm considering to start collecting the farm sub-theme, just because it would look great with my "old" city sets.

This, however, doesn't mean I won't buy any other themes. I bought Medieval Market Village and the Imperial Flagship is still on my wanted list.

Therefore I voted 80%

As a kid I had so many different sets from different themes. Now I'm a collector of sets so I just collection Star Wars. Lego and Star Wars are both from the childhood. I guess I never out grew them. But who can when its so much fun?

I've considered buying a few castle sets but I think they would look out of place with about 110 star wars sets. Maybe later on I'll look into buying a few. Recreating a scene from Lord of the Rings would be an interesting project.

So right now, I only Star Wars.

2 Christmases ago, I went all out on Castle. Last year's, aliens stood no chance against the Space Police. Around my birthday time, Prince of Persia will be filling the shelves in my room. Still not sure about this year's Christmas. Maybe just a mix-up.

I tend to stick with Star Wars, however, with the recent amount of CW sets, I've managed to expand my range. I enjoy the odd City set, Really like my technics, And love other random amazingly well designed sets, like the MMV and Effiel Tower :sweet:

I like how this thread is worded: Settle into a theme.

I came out of the dark ages to do the Star Wars line, and was absolutely dedicated to every Original Trilogy set up until a year or two ago. There's just so many re-releases it's getting a bit excessive and less interesting. And expensive.

At about the same time, I really got into the Pirates, and went back and dug out all of my old Pirates stuff. For a while last summer I think my hobby was hunting down Imperial Soldier impulse sets.

Since the Pirates theme was discontinued, I finally set my attention on something that I haven't been interested in since about 1985... CITY. And since then, I haven't looked back. I think the only thing that'll break me from City now are Trains or maybe the rumored re-release of Batman.

As a child it was always space for me,i couldnt get enough and most other themes got overlooked. As an adult,Agents bought me out of my darkages, tho my son is really to blame! Since last summer we've both gone lego mad and now have an entire room in our house devoted to Lego with sets from almost every theme! At the moment our main interest is City as we are building a nice little town however my personal faves are Exo Force and Space Police.Ive got complete collections of both themes. You cant beat a bit of sci-fi

Hi friends

I escaped my dark ages by discovering Lego Star Wars a few years ago however have found myself drifting into other themes this year as LSW seems to have been more about Clone Wars than classic lately which doesn't quite appeal to me as much.

I treated myself to the Emerald Night, some Space Police and have also got the Kingdoms Castle and M.M.Village to go with it (Christmas presents to myself the latter two ;) ).

I'm just wondering if people tend to focus on one theme or spread their interest over serveral? I'd been keen to learn feedback about this as am debating whether to avidly concentrate on one theme to fill it right out (eg other Kingdoms sets etc) - I've seen some amazing Fantasy set ups.

Thanks for any advice...

Hi there!

Speaking for myself I can say that I tend to buy anything that appeals to me, any sets that have interesting/unique parts or cool mimifigs.

My principal interest is definitely pirates, as a kid I only got 1 set but when I stepped out of my dark ages the first sets I bought were the pirates ... all of them .... in one shot ... and then some (I think I have 34 or 40 of this set).

I try as much as possible to buy sets with which I can expand my pirate universe, the medieval market, castles and pretty much all CC style buildings.

I know some AFOLs tend to collect one or 2 themes but it seems I can't get around to imposing a limit to myself, if I like it I buy it ... pretty simple!!!!!

Hope it helps!!!

I have a very over active imagination and a short attention span, because of this I move from theme to theme very quickly. As a result of these tendancies, I never really manage any large MOCs and layouts while my collection grows in all directions. I have sets from nearly every theme each year. Action themes being those that are perfect for me, with their short lifespan and varied content.

My advice to you is this: If you find that there is one particular theme you really enjoy or like the look of, stick to it. If there is more than one, try to combine them into one for your own sanity! (like a space town, or a Fantasy world) it allows you to build greater things and create layouts and such.

Basically I limit myself to one or two themes, depending on how you count.

I just recently exited my dark ages (3 months ago). I've decided to limit myself to basically just one theme (Kingdoms) and the collectible minifigures. I was originally planning to get the Pirates line, but when I learned they weren't continuing it really and that they're at the end of their shelf life (imminent rise in prices and availability), I decided not to. So Kingdoms is the other theme from my childhood that appeals to me. And the collectible minifigures are just too charming to pass up.

I think I would love to get another theme, but it's just a financial issue right now; household bills etc...have to draw a line in the sand.

If I were to buy other themed sets, I would do Atlantis or Space Police. I was pretty big on Star Wars growing up, but... man there is so much Star Wars stuff I wouldn't be able to get it all. I'm kind of the type where I don't want to miss a set in a theme, I kind of have to get them all. I might collect Pirates of the Caribbean next year if I like what I see.

Why not add a poll to this topic? I'd be interested to see the results.

I started put from my dark ages saying I'll buy nothing but Star Wars, and to this day SW is my biggest LEGO expense, but I have dabbled in many themes since then. I think buying the sets you like the most is the way to go. I found that if I don't buuy every single SW set each year, there is money left over for City sets, or harry Potter sets.

With the variety today I don't think there is a reason to even classify yourself one way or the other.

I used to buy all kinds of sets when I was younger. whatever looked cool. Now I'm very selective and cherry pick stuff for specific builds and parts.

Town/City is my theme of choice but I'll buy anything that looks like it can be butchered for parts or changed into a town/city set. I buy minifigs from across all themes and buy an awful lot of individual parts when I have a build idea in mind. I tend not to buy buildings bizarrely. I can build those from scratch anytime but vehicles aren't my strong point so I buy a lot of those sets.

I also tend to avoid primary colours. I've always hated the basic Lego colour palette. My city is all dk bley/dk orange/tan/white with brighter colours only used for details.

Makes sense - good idea. I can't quite figure out how the polls though relate to the topic though or maybe it's just me!!

I must say, upon reflection it's all about the minifigs for me, I go for the minifigs I like in sets I like is probably the best way to describe how I collect.

I'm sure LEGO have a range of aces up their sleeves to play in 2011 re new sets and what we know over at this time of year is only usually the tip of the iceberg as far as what actually unfolds through the new year.

I haven't seen anything yet that grabs me for 2011 other than HP digon alley but that would mean starting a HP collection!!

Maybe its time to consolidate, regroup and enjoy what I have for the time being...!!!
