robuko Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 Just seen Transformers: Age of extinction. The parallels between the Bayformers and the Marvel movies are really striking. Dark of the Moon was the same as The Avengers and this one is the same as CA:TWS. The US M-I complex is targeting its own allies and citizens in both films. Given the global reach of these franchises, it's interesting what messages Hollywood is putting out in its blockbusters. Are we being warned, or just softened up? Apart from that, it's one of the least worst of the Bayformers films and the climax battle is supposedly in HK (whoo! not that those areas actually exist...) so that makes it a 6.5/10 Quote
Bob De Quatre Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 I've seen "Begin again" ("New York Melody" in french... Yes we like to translate english movie names in english ). And I was so charmed by all the songs, that I keep listening to the soundtrack... Mark Ruffalo and Keira Knightley are both great in the movie, and she sings so beautifully Quote

I agree with you, the soundtrack is awesome Quote

kibosh Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 Dallas Buyers Club. No LEGO inspiration, but it was a great movie. Quote
K-Nut Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 Finally someone who watched it and like it I saw it recently too, and I thought it was very well done. Mark Ruffalo is definitely one of my favorite actors out there, and he does not disappoint. I recently saw The Three Amigos. Steve Martin is another one of my favorite actors, so I enjoyed this one. Definitely not the best movie I've seen nor is it his best work, but an enjoyable watch nonetheless with some very funny moments. Quote
Vindicare Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 Saw Maze Runner. I thought it was a great movie...had I not read the book. I haven't seen an adaptation stray so far from its book source. Fairly disappointed about that, they left out/changed a lot of what made the mystery of the book. I know minor changes are to be expected, but this was just bad. Quote
Sir_Basil_Ashton Posted September 27, 2014 Posted September 27, 2014 (edited) The Hangover 3. Never saw the 2nd one but finally watched the 3rd after having it on my DVR for months. Entertaining but nothing new. Edited September 27, 2014 by Sir_Basil_Ashton Quote
samurai-turtle Posted September 28, 2014 Posted September 28, 2014 I finally saw "Guardians of the Galaxy". A good sci-fi / comic book movie. Quote
Jared Posted September 28, 2014 Posted September 28, 2014 I watched the FOX Fantastic Four movie today. Never did like that movie. Though I don't think the reboot will be any better. It's so hard to find the "right" casting for such versatile heroes.... Quote
Kez Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 I've just been to see The Equalizer movie today, it was far greater than I expected and had solid actors in, most notably the amazing Chloe Moretz and the classic Denzel Washington. I rate this film 9/10. Quote
KotZ Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 I watched Eat a Bowl of Tea last night. Not the worst but not the best. Romance films really aren't my thing. Quote
Borador Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 Neighbors. Good, but a bit... Profane. No nudity, just a lot of swearing and adult jokes. I'd give it a B. Quote
Artanis I Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 Neighbors. Good, but a bit... Profane. No nudity, just a lot of swearing and adult jokes. I'd give it a B. Everybody needs good neighbours. Quote
robuko Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 Space station 76. I didn't really enjoy it at the time as it is a study in awkwardness and alienation. A lot of scenes that seemed tedious when watching it, in retrospect were completely brilliant. I wonder why Liv Tyler and Matt Bomer signed up for it. Patrick Wilson and Marisa Coughlan were excellent, the staging was superb, the script was so-so for 90% of it and great for 5%. On balance I liked it although it was dull to watch. 6.5/10 Quote
samurai-turtle Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 I watched Transformers: Age Of Extinction on DVD. I felt that they were blowing thing up throughout out the whole movie and, it was about 3 hours long. (Probably to long for that stuff.) And the Dinobots did not show up until the end of the movie. As for being the best live action Transformers, that is not really saying much is it? i did like the 2 easter eggs in the movie I spotted. I am wondering if their is more. (I am not going say what they are incase some one did not see the film yet.) Quote
K-Nut Posted October 4, 2014 Posted October 4, 2014 Been meaning to see it for a while, but tonight I was finally able to go out and see This Is Where I Leave You. Very bittersweet movie that I truly enjoyed. The funny parts are hilarious and the sad parts are tear-jerking. Definitely recommend it. Quote
Captain Nemo Posted October 4, 2014 Posted October 4, 2014 I just watched Gone Girl, with Ben Affleck. I was interested to see it, since well it looked good, and to see what kind of Batman we are in for! The latter of which I didn't get any idea on, but I did find that the movie was very, very, good--and super suspenseful. I've not read the book it's based off of so that helped add more suspense. This thing had so many twists and turns it rivaled GoT (Or at least a few episodes of it!). I will say it did seem a bit long, like really long; because of the twists there was no sense that it would end (This is not necessarily a bad thing, but there were times when you expected more common movie things to occur and signal the end is near); and that I didn't find the ending too satisfying. It's very surprising and unexpected, but not very satisfying. Still, Gone Girl is a great movie...although I'm still iffy on an Affleck Batman! Quote

The words "tedious" & "dull" were what won me over... "Hmmm, sounds like a good slow movie in set in space, I'll check it out!" I actually enjoyed it, contrary to most opinions I've heard. It was pretty much 90 minutes of character exploration, but despite nothing happening for the most part I never got bored. I laughed quite a few times especially near the start. The awkwardness exceeded my preferred limit at times though. Quote
Sir_Basil_Ashton Posted October 8, 2014 Posted October 8, 2014 The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers - Extended Edition. Kept me and the son engaged while cleaning his room and organizing his LEGO. Quote
Palathadric Posted October 8, 2014 Posted October 8, 2014 How can you watch Lord of the Rings while sorting LEGO. Blasphemy!!! Quote
OHarra Posted October 11, 2014 Posted October 11, 2014 I finally watched both Hobbit films and I am looking forward to see the last part. Longer and more complicated than I expected (considering simplicity of book), but very enjoyable. Quote
arc Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 Saw transformers age of extinction the other night, so I'm a person who has never seen any other transformers anything, or know anything about them. So it was a little weird to me, but I enjoyed it. Although it seemed to go on for long time, (almost 3 hours) and after a while the constant barrage of special effects messed with my eyes. But it wasn't bad. (Should satisfy my need for dinos until jp4) Quote
montgocloud Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 I just saw Gone Girl. Non-spoiler review ahead! Gone Girl is a thrilling mystery driven equally by style, director David Fincher's intense and bleak vision, and substance, the masterful performances of Ben Affleck and Rosemund Pike. It is founded on the core elements of the classic detective story: Affleck's Nick Dunne even remarks that he feels like he's in an episode of Law and Order. But instead of following through with the viewer's expectations, the film subverts them all effectively. This is achieved through Fincher's knowledge of visual storytelling. He sets up these expectations with his camerawork, use of contrasting ice-blue and warm-red color pallets, and score, provided by Fincher regulars Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. In essence, Fincher trains the audience with Pavlov's dog conditioning, manipulating the audience into expecting a certain tone or plot direction with the repetition of shots, colors, and music cues, and then completely turning these expectations on their head, leaving the audience dumbfounded. While many directors would merely focus on the verbal, especially when adapting a novel, Fincher takes full advantage of the unique opportunities offered in the film medium. This is not to say that the film only works because of Fincher's style. As stated before, stars Ben Affleck and Rosemund Pike truly breathe life into this world. The actors portray extremely complicated characters, and repeat viewings of the film bring to the forefront the nuances each actor gives in their performances. They do not fall into the convention of giving two different performances for the same character, rather, the misdirection comes from everything else. In other words, characters remain consistent throughout the narrative regardless of whether the audience thinks they are good or bad. The audience's opinion of the character's morality comes from the plot, not from the performances. This increases rewatchability of the film. Also, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the brilliant advertising campaign. In a world where trailers show all and leaks are not only abundant but expected, David Fincher ensured the best movie-going experience possible by working closely with the trailer editors. It shows the tone and gives a rough idea of the plot, yet it doesn't show too much. Gone Girl truly shows how David Fincher has grown as a filmmaker. Sure, he restricts himself to the detective mystery genre, and some may view this movie as pretty safe, but it cannot be denied that he is a director who, while playing to his strengths, builds and improves upon criticism from his past films. Gone Girl is Fincher's definitive work thus far and the definitive mystery film of the year. 5/5 Quote

I think all of my favourite scenes featured Patrick Wilson on his own, although Marisa Coughlan with the medical droid was first class too. The awkwardness factor was why I kind of struggled with it, but I agree, worth watching. Edited October 13, 2014 by robuko Quote
