Mazin Posted January 23, 2015 Posted January 23, 2015 However, what do adults want to see? There's this stigma with animation that if it's not CGI, it's kids stuff, which is absolutely rubbish since I just recently purchased Akira and that is not a movie I'd show to a ten year old. It's partially Shrek's fault, in that since then adults seem to think that if a film's animated with CG, it's going to be aimed at both kids and adults, and it's sort of true that since then there's been a shift to CGI. Yeah, You're probably right that this can be one of the reasons. But, say like 15-30 years, was animated stuff targeted only to kids? I mean, weren't those considered adult stuff as well? Obiosuly people could always choose to watch them or not. But statisticaly, did animation become an adult stuff because of cgi or was it adored by them even before? Surely Disney never thought about his hand drawn animations as stuff targeted only for kids, or even targeted to kids at all. Those were just animated stories. At least at the beginining. Actually a lot of people still consider cgi animations as kids stuff. It often makes a lot of unnecesary confusion, as some adult say that a certain animation was too childish, and some parents complain that some animations should not realy be seen by kids. So, basicaly, they're not that universal anymore. It seems that artist have already problems if they should write them for kids or for adults... I'll agree with the big name actors who can't voice act. That's a problem. I will disagree with you on traditional animation being "fresh for decades". What about films like Toy Story? Is it not still being watched 20 years after it's initial release and adored by the general public? And there was garbage during the 80's and 90's, for both film and TV. Quack Pack, Bonkers, the list goes on. I'll add I'm not a 90's kid; I spent most of my youth during the 2000's, so saying "we were lucky to live in different times" is sort of exclusive. The 90's had Batman and Gargoyles and Ducktales. The 2000's had Avatar: the Last Airbender and Kim Possible and Danny Phantom. There were some excellent animated shows during the 2000's, just during the first half of the decade. Maybe it's a generational gap, maybe I'm missing something, but I personally think we're in a better position now when it comes to animation then we were five years ago. We're getting some incredibly good western animated shows, unlike the drivel of Spongebob clones that were constantly airing. Of course there was crap 20, 30 or 40 years ago. I didn't say that everything was perfect. I have a problem with watching some of the shows i enjoyed as a kid. Some are still great, some are not, some could be reshaped a little bit. But, say statisticaly, all those traditional classic hits are still higly enjoyed. While, with cgi, most of them, even if a box office hit, are forgetable. Toy Story is one of execptions. It was something new, fresh, and prety well written. But you can't say the same thing about Toy Story 3. Which was one to watch, as most of cgi animations, they're simply funny at the first time. But also TS3 was rather forgetable, badly written, and extremely scary, especialy at the end. And, with me saying that todays kids are less lucky, i just mean that there's nothing special about those shows. There hasn't been a single franchise in 200s that would bring something worthy, and original, and special. That would rock as much as TMNT, G.I.Joe, Ducktales, Cops, Dino-Riders, Visionaries, Captain Planet, Centurions, He-Man, Swat Cats and so on. Of course kids can watch everything, a lot of people enjoy evertything. But there's just nothing catchy in any of those novadays shows. Also, to not wholly derail this: Akira. Saw it, loved it, not a movie for kids, though. Haven't seen Akira yet But with japanese animation, manga and stuff, i'd say that it's mostly adult stuff, as it's just like a different way of showing an adult story. Americans won't use animation to film adult sci-fi flicks, or horror flicks, or erotic flicks. Well, not very often. And apparently Japs are crazy about it. Not a big fun of manga though Quote
montgocloud Posted January 24, 2015 Posted January 24, 2015 Snowpiercer...Ugh, terrible. So many plot holes and things that don't make any sense. It's not exactly a pleasant movie to watch, either. 2 hours of my life I can't have back. I can't see how it was praised so highly by reviewers. A lot of user reviews on various sites seem to agree with me though, lol...Glad I'm not the only one. Snowpiercer was more allegorical than it was science fiction. If you go into it expecting ultra-realistic, accurate sci-fi, then you're going to be disappointed. I personally love it. Quote

I got that, but to me it was to the point where I had to turn my brain off to ignore it. I'm that way with lots of movies, I couldn't watch Skyfall because it was so stupid, lol. Kintobor Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 Well... I watched the Interview. It was.... it was something alright. Quote
Artanis I Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 The Drop. Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace and so on. Went darker than I expected. I'm not a dog expert, but that didn't look like a pit bull to me. Quote
Artifex Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 The Theory of Everything. Good, solid movie. Good story, great acting. The editor deserves an Oscar. Quote
just2good Posted February 7, 2015 Posted February 7, 2015 (edited) I saw The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water. I loved the first film ever since it came out, and, this one was... interesting. The 2D animation parts were really good, but the movie was weighed down with some very crappy live-action hybrid parts that were pretty bad in terms of writing. The climax battle was pretty good, though. I'd give it a 7/10. My favorite part... was all the time travel parts. That was so funny, so well animated, and pretty clever! Sam892 Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 Ive been on a movie binge recently and Ive watch a lot of films over the past week or so. Dredd Man Of Steel No Country for Old Men True Grit Unbreakable Skyfall Ted And Gone Girl All in all theres not a bad film so far, I'd already seen Man of Steel, Dredd, Skyfall and Ted but its been a while since I saw them. I remember liking Man of Steel more the first time, but its alright, still waiting for an incredible Superman film. Gone Girl is awesome but it really screws with your head, and I absolutely loved True Grit and No Country for Old Men. Unbreakable however was a real shock for me, I forgot M.Night Shyamalan has made good movies, plus I miss when Bruce Willis cared about the films he made. Quote
Tariq j Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 I just finished watching Moonraker a couple of hours ago. Quote
Sir Brickalot Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 Big Hero 6! Really well done film, I really loved Baymax Quote
TheLegoExperience Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 Big Hero 6! Really well done film, I really loved Baymax Which happens to be my latest movies as well! Has the same charm and great story as any Disney movie, but I feel it was a bit, predictable. Quote
Artanis I Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 Predestination. Sci-fi crime type movie. The flashback story seemed a bit too long, I was wondering if the rest of the movie was just going to be about that but it all tied in eventually, and there was plenty of movie still left afterwards. Interesting, another one of those movies that you think over after it's finished. Quote
Godtshep Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 Shaun the Sheep Movie. Absolutely wonderful. 10/10 Quote
Iria Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 Snowpiercer - I expected it to be silly, but it was surprisingly decent. Quote
kibosh Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 Fury. Really made me want to build some WWII stuff... Quote
Kelso Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 I watched The Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 1 a couple of days ago, not bad :) Quote
kibosh Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 Lucy. Terrible movie. Just... dumb. Of course, Scarlett Johansson looked fabulous. Quote
dr_spock Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 Godzilla (1998 version). It was god-awful. It started out pretty good but then went down hill from there. The giant lizard lacked the spirit and any resemblance of the real Godzilla. It just ran around and roared at the main characters like a T-rex instead of using its fiery bad breath advantage to stop them. Even my CMF habitat MOC did more nuclear cooking than this excuse of a Godzilla movie. lizard man habitat by dr_spock_888, on Flickr Quote

Kelso Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 Penguins of Madagascar. Just watched that movie, it's a lot of fun! Quote
Thelegomaster Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 I just watched The Iron Giant for the first time on TV. I have got to say, that movie has topped any animated movie I've ever seen. Quote
dr_spock Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 Boxtrolls. It was cheezy. Nice vig! But it did have a cool soundtrack. Except for Puff Daddy (or whatever he is called this week) nuclear-cooking Led Zeppelin. Thanks. I don't remember the sound track. Quote
