Artanis I Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 Boxtrolls. It was cheezy. Thanks. I don't remember the sound track. Well it had Wallflowers, RATM, Fuel, Foo Fighters, Silverchair, Jamiroquai, Green Day & Ben Folds Five which made it cool if you were in high school at the time! Quote
robuko Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 (edited) Before I go to sleep. Fantastic cast of Mark Strong, Nicole Kidman, Colin Firth all excellent as usual. The set up is conceited and the story is disappointing, basically a bad version of memento. 4/10. Dr Strangelove. Excellent acting, directing, camera work, sound. A truly remarkable film about war. Stuff crazier than this seems to be happening everywhere now. 10/10 Gone girl. A well acted and directed thriller. Predictable plot twist but nicely done. Ben Affleck was good in the role. 6/10. Birdman. Excellent cinematography and interesting, unconventional story with a stagey feel. Michael Keaton was pretty good, Edward Norton excellent and all the female characters were good. Deserved the best cinematography oscar but not the best film of last year, I probably wouldn't watch it again. 6.5/10. Out of Africa. Beautifully staged film of memoirs of 1920s Kenya. Meryl Streep was outstanding. The script, music, and directing are very good, although the story felt unresolved. I guess life can be like that. 8.5/10 The expendables 1-3 Stallone and friends having fun blowing stuff up in movies about Stallone and friends blowing stuff up. Extremely violent but very good within the genre. 7/10 each. Yes, I am rating these higher than Gone Girl or Birdman, because I would enjoy watching them again. Edited March 2, 2015 by robuko Quote
kibosh Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 Gone Girl. It was 2+ hours of awesome, but the totally crashed and burned in the final 5 minutes. Worst. Ending. Ever. It's like they were running out of film and just stopped. Quote
Jedi-Bendu Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 Quite a lot..... Jodorowsky's Dune 9/10. Mindblowing documentary about 'the greatest movie Never made'. Fantastic stuff. Nightcrawler 6/10 Many critics praised this movie as one of 2014's best....but I don't agree. Great images of L.A. by night and Gyllenhaal is in fine form, but I found the story not that interesting. The Guest 7/10 A VERY enjoyable thriller....with a perfect soundtrack (DAF, Front 242, Sisters of Mercy) and an outstanding Dan Stevens Prisoners 8/10 An 'edge of your seat' thriller with fantastic powerful performances from Jackman and Gyllenhaal. Highly recommended! The Equalizer 6/10 Denzel Washington is great (as he always is), but a rather standard story. Non-Stop 7/10 Taken 3 6/10 Quote
SomeAssemblyRequired Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 * Saving Mr. Banks: Whilst I acknowledge the historical inaccuracies in the film, I still loved it. My 2nd fave film of 2013, behind another Tom Hanks movie "Captain Phillips". 5/5 for both * Gran Torino: My favourite Eastwood film, very underrated! 5/5 * And then I treated myself to Taken 3....what the heck was that. 2/5 Quote
robuko Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 Just endured the Hobbit Battle of Five Armies. Beautifully over-produced and photographed rubbish. The overwhelming fearsome Gundabad army barely showed up, the dwarves and elves and humans were all hopelessly overmatched but somehow won, and the Eagles got 10 seconds of screen time. Looked great but it was rubbish. 4/10 Quote
Artanis I Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 Looked great but it was rubbish. 4/10 You're right again. I just can't find the words for the Dol Guldur sequence. Quote
Vindicare Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 Chappie. It was a great movie. The story wasn't what I expected it was going to be. Quote
SomeAssemblyRequired Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 Watched Chappie too but felt left down completely after only watching the first trailer. 2/5 Quote
Jedi-Bendu Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 Predestination (2014) 6/10 Mind boggling movie....not sure if the big twist is genius or just silly. A Walk Among the Tombstones (2014) 6/10 Average. The 6 is because of Liam Neeson, otherwise it would've been lower... The Hole (2009) 7/10 F****** creepy! A movie only Joe Dante can make. And yes: there's the obligatory Dick Miller cameo. Cold in July (2014) 6/10 This one has a promising start...but then things get mediocre. Don Johnson is great as a supporting character though. Quote
SomeAssemblyRequired Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 The Hole (2009) 7/10 F****** creepy! A movie only Joe Dante can make. And yes: there's the obligatory Dick Miller cameo. I love The Hole - my favourite horror film I've seen in recent years. Quote
Artanis I Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 Predestination (2014) 6/10 Mind boggling movie....not sure if the big twist is genius or just silly. The twist just gets twistier! Quote
Iria Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 Finally got around to watching The Machinist. I didn't think it was that great. Christian Bale's mannerisms in the film reminded me so much of my former friend who had schizophrenia, which made the film almost uncomfortable to watch. Quote
Kelso Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 I watched Interstellar yesterday, I'm not sure how I feel about it. Quote
Kalhiki Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 Song of the Sea. After seeing The Secret of Kells, I was highly anticipating Tomm Moore's next movie. Been following Song of the Sea's production for about a year, and it all paid off. A beautifully animated movie with loveable characters and wonderful music. The story felt a bit simple, but I think it worked. It was just a cute, fun movie, and I loved it. Quote

General Magma Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 The past one-and-a-half month: The Magnificent Seven Django Unchained Tombstone A Fistful of Dollars For A Few Dollars More The Good, The Bad and The Ugly Great films - I especially liked "Tombstone", "For A Few Dollars More" and, my favorite, "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly". More westerns, here I come... Quote
Kintobor Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 Saw The Grand Budapest Hotel with my grandmother. I don't think she liked it as much as I did, especially since I loved it. Quote
SomeAssemblyRequired Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 Watched Secret Life of Walter Mitty for a second time. It's harmlessly entertaining, with a good sense of humour. 3.5/5 Elysium: It's pretty good, much better than Chappie. Not sure if Blomky is the best choice for Alien 5...or if we even need an Alien 5. Robocop2k14: I am yet to see the original, so it may have been even worse than I thought if I had seen the original. 1/5 Just. Lazy. Quote
Gremer Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 I watched "Do You Believe?" on Friday. I enjoyed it, but it felt disjointed at parts in retrospect. Quote
Iria Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 The past one-and-a-half month: The Magnificent Seven Django Unchained Tombstone A Fistful of Dollars For A Few Dollars More The Good, The Bad and The Ugly Great films - I especially liked "Tombstone", "For A Few Dollars More" and, my favorite, "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly". More westerns, here I come... Solid list. The "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" graveyard scene and score is beautifully epic, and is what got me into watching westerns. Love how some of the musical scores were recorded before scene filming took place, just as in the movie "Once Upon a Time in the West", which is my favourite Western. Quote
SomeAssemblyRequired Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 (edited) Treated myself to Nolan films... Prestige: Pretentious and just trying too hard to be smart. 2/5 TDK trilogy: Good films but no need to rewatch. 3.5/5 as whole. Inception: Good movie 4/5 Interstellar: Refer to Prestige. Not a big Nolanite...smart but wastes talent. Edited March 24, 2015 by SomeAssemblyRequired Quote
Palathadric Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 The Back to the Future Trilogy for the first time First time? You can't be serious! Glad you finally got around to it though. Quote
SomeAssemblyRequired Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 So I caught up on all Best Picture noms * Imitation Game: Was really great and shows me Cumberbatch is extremely talented. 5/5 * Theory of Everything: Great performance from Redmayne, probably the best one nominated. 5/5 * American Sniper: It was good...but not best picture worthy, and not as strong as Eastwood's previous films. 4/5 * Boyhood: More of a concept than a movie. Bland cinematography with no plot, but Arquette raises the film from 2 stars, to 3. 3/5 * Whiplash: Really good. JK Simmons was really great. 4.5/5 * Birdman: I thought it was really dull, self indulgent, and a slight rip off of Death of a Salesman, and Walter Mitty. 2/5 * Grand Budapest: Was very funny and entertaining. 4/5 * Selma: Really great and very emotional performance from Oyelwo. 5/5 Quote
Iria Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 Watched the Godfather. Possibly for the first time. Quote
