I saw Watchmen over the weekend (a couple of times actually). I ended up watching it with a friend who has also read the Graphic Novel (as in, we have both read it) at the midnight show on an IMAX screen. I've only watched 3 other movies that (Transformers, The Dark Knight, and Beowulf 3-D). This one doesn't have any IMAX specific scenes and I didn't think it would going into it. I just wanted to see it on the huge screen because I really liked the GN (which I actually read about 2 years before I heard the movie was actually going to become a reality). As with any adaptation, it couldn't have everything. This one in particular would be very difficult to live up to the hype as it has been considered one of the best comics out there for at least a decade (probably since shortly after it came out, realistically). It did better than I ever had any hope it would. Even after seeing production shots and seeing previews filled with scenes straight out of the GN, I never let my hopes get raised because I have seen too many adaptations turn out terrible. This one had more than I ever thought it would have. The DVD will have another hour or so on top of that. The end was changed and I thought I would hate it, but I really think it works. My only real complaints are that some bits involving Ozymandias weren't there and I think it hurt his character. Beyond that, great job.

Warning to those considering taking minors: It's rated R for numerous reasons and it will remind of that every few minutes. The violence, though not all over the place, is graphic. There is nudity (female and male, lots on the latter for anyone bothered by that) and a few sex scenes (they are all part of the plot and serve a purpose beyond bringing in male fans, or female fans as the case may be). It is all handled straight and isn't played for laughs. Also, a primer on the state of global affairs in 1985 (particularly events related to the Cold War) is probably in order if you don't know your history.

I just finished watching Innocents of Ryloth on youtube and I thought it was ok

Er, that's not a movie. :sceptic: Such comments should go into the Clone Wars Discussion Thread. Of course, if you post it there, you should say more than "it was OK".

Anyway, here are the last two movies I've seen:

TAKEN: Not bad, but nothing special. For my taste, it could have used a bit more action since it had so little story. It's entertaining though.

Futurama - Into the Wild Green Yonder: This was actually pretty good! It felt much more like a Futurama story than the other three movies and was funnier too. It was better than the other movies, but still not quite as good as the show IMHO.

Watchmen - Loved it! Rorshach is still the best character. I loved the opening montage set to "The Times are A Changing" - it just fit the spirit of the book. However, the changing of the ending was a bit disappointing, but I think this made more sense.

I saw Watchmen this afternoon and I must say I'm quite impressed! It was a great movie, I really liked it. Everything was worked out very good and the graphics were amazing. The music was also nice, a bit unexpected, but after a bit of thinking, it did fit in well (All Along The Watchtower, wow), awesome movie. I'll definitelly order the comic book when the time is there.

I just watched a couple of older movies I bought through Amazon. I have a soft spot for horror movies and 80s movies (particularly 80s horror movies) so I am always on the look out for ones I have not seen that sound interesting (or so bad they're good). So, here's what I got earlier this week:

Inferno

This is a film by Italian director Dario Argento. It is basically a sequel to Suspiria. As a horror movie, especially one made in 1980, it's not bad. Suspiria was the better movie in my opinion. Both movies (and the recently released 3rd part The Mother of Tears) all suffer from not really defining the abilities and motivations of the witches that are the villains of these movies. They seem to enjoy killing everyone they come across, but we never really know why. We never really find out how people end up allying with the three sisters. Not that any of that really greatly matter for these movies, but it does stop them from being considered movies by traditional standards. This movie and Suspiria feature innovative camera angles and very unique scenery along with what I would describe as a technotronic horror soundtrack. It's worth watching if you like 70s style horror movies. Unfortunately the third movie looses most of the charm that older horror movies have and looks more like a modern horror movie (and stars the directors daughter, Asia Argento).

The other movie I got that I had not watched before was Ladyhawke

This movie stars Rutger Hauer, Matthew Broderick, and Michelle Pfeiffer. Hauer and Pfeiffer are lovers cursed to change into animals by a jealous bishop who tapped the powers of Hell to make the curse happen. He turns into a wolf at night and she turns into a hawk during the day. As animals they basically have no memory of their human lives. Broderick is a thief who escapes the bishop's executioners and gets picked up by Hauer to help him get revenge on the bishop. The plot is interesting and is definately one that works best as a mid 80s fantasy movie. If the movie had a better soundtrack (even if it were still a technotronic soundtrack, it could have been better), a higher prop budget so everyone wasn't armed with obviously stainless steel weapons, and possibly better transformation scenes (or any at all for that matter) it would have been a decent fantasy movie for it's time. It wouldn't have been great, but it wouldn't be nearly forgotten.

I don't regret getting either movie, but I won't rewatch them with tremendous frequency.

Last film I watched properly? (I have a bad habit of flicking over film channels watching a few scenes at a time of each film.) Fifth Element is what I watched last, just after I,Robot. Both are good films and I love me some sf action film. Killed time while I waited for my laptop to get better.

I recently watched Slumdog Millionaire  (for a new movie) but most recently watched Howl's Moving Castle  (for the fifty millionth time)

I'd give Slumdog 5 stars, I thought it was brill, funny and very clever... but I can't usually watch a whole movie in one sitting as I have the attention span of my 1 year old. So I have been watching tv shows. Latest favourites are SKINS (UK) and The Mighty Boosh (UK), so so so so brilliant. Incidentally the dude from Slumdog is in Skins seasons 1 and 2.

Last night I watched Tales of the Black Freighter and Under the Hood. For anyone who doesn't know, these are both add ons to the movie Watchmen. They are parts of the graphic novel that they made but didn't actually include in the film. They are sold together as one DVD.

As seperate movies apart from Watchmen, there's not much reason to watch them. As add ons (that I hear may be added into the movie on the super ultra edition DVD) they are nice. Tales of the Black Freighter was a nice adaptation of the story within the story from the Graphic Novel. It works as a parallel to the story of one of the characters in the movie (which was it's point in the GN). It was animated and looked decent. Under the Hood was live action. It featured the actors from the movie in their respective roles. It is set like a TV interview with Hollis Mason (Nite Owl I) discussing his book (Under the Hood). It features several characters that are more or less background characters in the movie, such as Silk Spectre's manager, Wolly Weaver, and Newsstand Guy (unfortunately no sign of the kid reading Tales of the Black Freighter). It also features a small bit (less than a minute) with the Comedian and quite a bit with Silk Spectre I. It also features 80's commercials at random points as the interview cuts to commercial breaks and at least one is a product from the GN made by Veidt Industries.

Overall I think Under the Hood was the better add on and could seemlessly be a special feature on a DVD version of Watchmen or bits of it could work as background material put into the movie. It seemed to be the more original of the two. Tales of the Black Freighter could probably be worked into the movie if they expand the role of the newsguy and the kid and use it in bits and pieces throughout the movie. I am glad that they made these and I am interested to see how they work these into the movie in the ultimate DVD.

I finally got around to watching Apocalypse Now (Redux I believe is the edition name, it looks like a dosier). I bought it a while ago when I saw it on sale somewhere. I had already watched the movie prior to that. It was a movie that I bought and just didn't get around to watching it, until now. If you've never seen the movie, you need to. It shows the chaos of war (Vietnam in this case) and the characters that can populate it. Good acting all around from Martin Sheen, Robert Duvall, and Marlon Brando all as men who have clearly been through too much, though each acts differently based on their experiences. It also fetaures a Harrison Ford cameo. This movie is the reason some people associate Ride of the Valkyries with Vietnam (and it's probably the reason they used that song in the Vietnam scene in Watchmen).

I just got done watching the new Fast and Furious movie. It was nice seeing most of the original cast back together. It seemed to be somewhat more serious than the other 3. There is a lot more of the criminal element than the other 3 and the plot is mostly revenge driven. Overall I thought it was a good movie. I was suprised seeing at least one character in the movie and his inclusion (and the end) point towards this movie taking place before Tokyo Drift.

Last night me and my boyfriend went to see Inkheart in the movies. I haven't read the books, but I thought it was a nice little adventure film. Nothing spectacular or very original, though.

And today we watched the old 60's Doctor Who -film "The Dalek Invasion in 2150's" (or something like that). We wondered why there were so many things off in comparison to the series, and later found out from Wikipedia that the movie isn't even considered canon in the Whoniverse. Go figure. It was a hilariously poorly done b-class sci-fi movie, anyway. The daleks were cute, though, albeit awfully vulnerable for "invulnerable" creatures. Seriously, one exploded just from being tipped over in the movie!

Lets see... It might have been Happy Tree Friends (Aww, they're so cute when they tear themselves to bits! :alien: )

Lets see... It might have been Happy Tree Friends

There's a movie of those??

Anyway, I've seen a couple of films lately: Knowing, I Love You Man, and 1408. All of them are pretty good.

Knowing is very exciting and has some very good disaster scenes. But the ending kinda kills it. I don't know what I was expecting, but it wasn't this, and IMHO, there could have been much better endings to this. :sadnew: But it's definitely worth a watch!

I Love You, Man was a very funny movie. I wasn't exactly rolling on the floor laughing, but it was one of the best comedies I have seen in a while for sure.

1408 was very entertaining as well. I love movies where people are locked into a deadly place for some odd reason (like Alien, Cube or Saw II), so I liked it. In the end, it didn't make a whole hell lot of sense, but that's not what Stephen King stories are about anyway.
