Very nice, looks more efficient than many others i've seen.
February 21, 201015 yr Good concept and explanation, but like many Lego automatic transmissions it does have a problem with slipping at the intermediate speeds. I actually liked your last automatic (or actually CVT) gearbox better, the one based around differentials.
February 21, 201015 yr Author Well the slipping is not present here at all. Because as soon as the first gear is disconection the second one kicks in. This was just an expriment, which actaully succeeded. Comapring to CVT, this gearbox doesnt need any friction to work, but is louder.
February 21, 201015 yr It seems to me that the gears slip a bit whenever it switches between speeds (such as around 1:15 in the video), resulting in that "cracking" sound. This is a common issue with almost all the automatics I've seen on Brickshelf though. That's why I liked your CVT, which had extra friction as you said but never slipped at all. Still, as an experimental concept this is certainly pretty cool.
February 21, 201015 yr Author That sound isnt slipping of the driven gear, but slipping of the second gear, which isnt engaged. The ouput never slips :)
June 8, 20159 yr Sorry to bump this old thread ! But i would love to have some pictures or a ldraw file of your gearbox ZBLJ. I do have looked at your youtube video, but there were some steps that i dont understand..
