What a great topic! Somehow I haven't seen it before...

And what a coincidence that it is today that I'm visiting my parents, I'll try to dig up some photos of my so called MOCs from early 1990's. Of course we didn't have a digital camera back then, but I remember taking some pictures of my LEGO with my analog camera. I'll try to find and scan them, their quality won't be that good but I'll do my best. But be warned - they look like a LEGO MOCer's bad dream.

On a side note - when I was a kid, Internet was not a popular and easily available medium, so when kids built their MOCs, they could only show them to their friends and family. I remember how much I loved my creations as a kid, despite them being quite ugly (not to me back then, of course). If I were like 10 or 11 years old today, I'd probably post my MOCs somewhere on the web as well, not realising how ugly they'd be. What I'm trying to say is, the kids of today can easily learn to post MOCs online, even before learning how to build them properly. I guess people of my age were actually a bit lucky that we could not share our MOCs with the world, showing how poor builders we were and possibly getting criticised for what we thought back then were awesome creations. Back then we kept them to ourselves, but at least our dignity was intact. I hope I'm making at least some sense here.

Also, Ralph, awesome jet, it makes me feel deprived

Well, you have to keep in mind that back then I wasn't much younger than many of the people who post here (as AFOLs) are right now and had already been building for many years and built up a sizeable collection.

The internet didn't exist when I was a child, so I was in the same boat. I developed a lot of the things I did pretty much in isolation. It also meant that whenever I wanted to build a scale model of something I had to rely on books and the library. I see that as one of the advantages today's children have. If they start out being poor builders, they've got many more resources at their disposal to improve dramatically than we had, such as all the great stuff that is being done by other builders. They don't have to develop everything themselves.

Cheers,

Ralph

Yeah, that's the flip side of the coin I was going to refer to as well. Nowadays you can post whatever you want, but you can also study lots and lots of MOCs online, thus finding inspiration. When I was a kid, I could rely solely on my imagination. Nowadays, you can find tons of MOCs to inspire you, as well as read about all kinds of building techniques and so on. Internet has changed a lot of things, inluding the way LEGO fans do what they do.

OK, I found some old photos in my parents' album and scanned them. The pictures are quite blurry, but hey, it's just for fun! For the same reason, don't be harsh on me - I was like 9 or maybe 10 when I built those!

These houses are supposed to form a street, I remember I loved building streets, but as I didn't have any street baseplates, I just built houses (well, sort of) and placed them in a row. At the top you can also see what looks like two race cars preparing for the race, and a police car, a police motorcycle and a horse (maybe it was supposed to be a police horse, I'm not sure). At the bottom part you can see something that looks like a small spaceship, and the big and very colourful vehicle in the middle part of the picture is a bus - I remember building those quite frequently. :classic:

The first building on the left is actually a set, so obviously it looks much better than everything that surrounds it. Right next to it you can see what I think are two more houses, one of which is also very colourful, and the other one - the blue one - seems to be partially demolished, I'm not sure what my intentions were here.

One more shot of the whole thing, and the last picture I found. You can see the front of the bus here. Now that I think of it, the blue building was probably supposed to be a bus stop - note the raised platform that allows minifigs to get onto the bus. What you see here was probably half of all my LEGO collection at the time, if not more than a half.

As mentioned earlier, those things were built by me about 20 years ago, when I was about 9 or 10, and despite their obviously poor quality, I'm happy that I found these photos as I feel quite nostalgic about them. And I actually had the courage to post them here!

Thanks for sharing Dreamweb! I wish I had photos like yours of my earlier builds, alas they appear to have been lost in the mists of time. I used to have cities looking a lot like yours, I guess most of us went through this phase, so no need to be ashamed. :sweet:

These are the only MOCs that have lasted from my childhood to teen years. These were built from 97-2004. A few have been modded too add color but, still have their original designs.

They are as follows: 97 Utility Truck; 98' Sport Truck and SUV: 97' MTV Bullet w/ jet ski; Mariokart 64 racer; 97' Banshee 3-Wheeler (was watching 91's Batman while building); 98' Cargo Jet; 02' Rally Car.

The cargo jet has been modded for more space in Jan. 2011 but, looks as it did 12 years ago.

My brother collected Star Wars Ep.1. When he quit, I built this. Thinking about scrapping it now.

Finally, as a kid, my neighbor hood friends an I built, what I call a Gravity Tram from 2004. Our longest span was almost a quarter mile down hill. I took about 2 1/2 minutes to run. I would like to rebuild this one and try again:wacko:

moc_04_gravity_trams.jpg Most have a safe place and will not be rebuilt, the ship and gravity tram are on the chopping block though:classic:

It is a boat. I was 13.

As a long time LEGO Pirates fan, I actually used to build ships that looked a lot like yours! At that time I only wanted them to be as big as possible, didn't care about the design too much.

I have one more childhood memory I'd like to share with you. When my uncle once came to visit us, I showed him my bricks and he (possibly with my father's help, I'm not sure) built a space-buggy sort of thing, which looked totally awesome to me! I remember trying to rebuild it from memory by myself a few times later on, but couldn't. I think he would've made a good AFOL.
