Legostein Posted March 7, 2010 Posted March 7, 2010 Hello! There are so many great techniques used in this complex, so that it's an incredible source for inspiration. Alone the big variety for the plant environment is amazing. Using those green rock parts as hedge is a very useful method of using big ugly rock pieces. Cheers, ~ Christopher Quote
JimBee Posted March 7, 2010 Posted March 7, 2010 This is truly a luxe creation, Svelte! I really like the tiled roof- very interesting texture. The army men stands work well for adding variety to tree leaf shapes, and I can't wait to see what you do with them next. Is this based off of a real building, or just certain type of building? Quote
erined5 Posted March 7, 2010 Posted March 7, 2010 Really nice MOC Svelte. I like the roof technique, but my favorite part was the use of the army men base in the trees. I am always looking for new tree foliage techniques and I think now I have to go buy some more 7595's and maybe even a 7594. Good job! Quote
Rayman Posted March 7, 2010 Posted March 7, 2010 So many great techniques jam packed into this cute little building! The texture on the roof is my favourite part of the build. Thanks for sharing Svelte Quote
Svelte Posted March 7, 2010 Author Posted March 7, 2010 The first post has been updated with the promised reference pix Full view showing recessed courtyard and gate. View showing roof tiles. Courtyard detail. Quote
Siegfried Posted March 7, 2010 Posted March 7, 2010 Update 8 March: here are the promised reference pix The building is almost adjacent to the famous Wayside Chapel in King's Cross Yeah that's the one. It is a stronger resemblance than I remembered actually. (I haven't been to Sydney for 10 years... OK. I'll shut up about Sydney now.) Are you going to show the residents photos of the MOC? Quote
Svelte Posted March 7, 2010 Author Posted March 7, 2010 Yeah that's the one. It is a stronger resemblance than I remembered actually. I'm amazed you remember it so well! There's so many great buildings in this area for inspiration. Here's a cafe on Elizabeth Bay Road I've had my eye on to do for ages: There's also another great apartment complex on Lizzie Bay Road in dark brown and tan shades which the new PoP arches will work brilliantly for It definitely poses different design challenges to work from something grounded firmly in reality - like certain kinds of photography, it becomes about the lines and shape rather than specific details. Are you going to show the residents photos of the MOC? They may take offence at any unintended resemblance to the figs I included Quote
ACCURATEin Posted March 8, 2010 Posted March 8, 2010 Your MOC has features that remind me of a Historic Spanich hotel that I stayed at in Los Angeles. Nice work! Quote
MetroiD Posted March 8, 2010 Posted March 8, 2010 Once again - I really enjoyed seeing this one. Clean & sweet! Great work, Svelte :) Quote
Zorbas Posted March 8, 2010 Posted March 8, 2010 Excellent work Svelte! The colour choice you've made is just beautiful and the whole design is really eye capturing! I just love LEGO buildings that have a different style from the ordinary! Man, those trees... Thanks for the pictures! Quote
benny Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 Very nice! Look like the real building! I like the dark yellow slope roof so much! Well done! Quote
Lorentzen Posted March 13, 2010 Posted March 13, 2010 Wow - I really love this MOC. It's amazing. Great idea with the green army men baseplates as leaves on the tree. After seeing the reference pics, you've really captured every detail from the original building. oh, btw - excellent roof technique. Quote
awesomebrick Posted March 13, 2010 Posted March 13, 2010 WOW Thats really good! I'm a big fan of your MOCs This is probably one of your best Keep up the amazing work! Quote
I Scream Clone Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 I must have missed this, good thing its in your sig I love the whole art deco styling of this atrocious Kings Cross domicile, its seediness pervades the nearby parkland, and don't get me started on the Lothario and his bohemian shirtless offsider. Underbelly anyone? The roofing looks spectacular and loving the dark tan highlights around the tan windows too Great stuff on the trees, the 1/2 barrels work alright for trunks and the lily pads are a nice touch. Well done. I'm amazed you remember it so well! There's so many great buildings in this area for inspiration. Here's a cafe on Elizabeth Bay Road I've had my eye on to do for ages: Are you sure its not the clientele you have your eye on? All these Svelte undercover photos haven't aroused suspicion yet in the neighbourhood? Quote
Svelte Posted April 1, 2010 Author Posted April 1, 2010 All these Svelte undercover photos haven't aroused suspicion yet in the neighbourhood? When I wear my bonnet and push the pram with my cat Sable in it, wearing a frilly bib, no one bats an eye! But this is King's Cross after all. Here's an extract from today's e-news from the pastor of the famous Wayside chapel which is just a few doors down from this fine MOC in real life: One of our street dwellers got himself into an argument some months ago that finished with a blow to his head with a bottle. The man has had most of his skull removed and I'm sure he's supposed to be wearing a helmet but he never does. He was talking about it all to me yesterday and suddenly grabbed my hand and rubbed it against his brain where there was no skull, as if I couldn't see that half of his head was missing. Local colour ON! Quote
The Eye Posted April 2, 2010 Posted April 2, 2010 The first of your MOC's I've seen, and I can presume it's one of the best, because to me and everyone on here, it is. The tree with the Green Army men bases is awesome, as is the apartment itself and as mentioned before the colourful characters. How long did this take you? Quote
