crossmr Posted July 13, 2010 Posted July 13, 2010 A little bit old but I wanted to comment on this. While Sluban often copies Oxford this isn't an exact copy of an Oxford set. This is something I've noticed Sluban does. They often copy part of a set or copy elements of another set and make a new set. Like the military sets will have vehicles missing or vehicles added, etc. The guy is an obvious copy of the leader model from many of the Oxford sets, but Oxford doesn't sell him on his own (at least not now, they may have in the past) the face is different, but the helmet, paper thing, horse, and weapons are all Oxford. You can compare it to this box shot of the leader from one of the Oxford sets. Quote
Peppermint_M Posted July 13, 2010 Author Posted July 13, 2010 I see. I knew that Sluban was a copycat, but I never was sure if they did outright clone the entire set or not, it was hard to match sets when I was researching for reviews (mainly because there is nothing but corperate for the other brands, unlike Lego). Thanks for clearing that up crossmr. Quote
happymark Posted July 13, 2010 Posted July 13, 2010 Just want to make a note that the first picture is showing chinese SANGUO theme. (not Korean). they are chinese characters too. more here: http://www.sluban.com.cn/stzc.asp?id=69 Quote
crossmr Posted July 13, 2010 Posted July 13, 2010 (edited) Just want to make a note that the first picture is showing chinese SANGUO theme. (not Korean). they are chinese characters too. more here: http://www.sluban.com.cn/stzc.asp?id=69 of course. They're not going to sell the toy with a Korean theme in China. All they've done though is take the same model and set and add some chinese decals (military sets) or tweak the faces/story for the ancient sets to be china. Otherwise they are copying Oxford's sets. Compare Sluban and Oxford top item and soldier around the middle completely identical They've just changed the flags to a Chinese theme. But oxford doesn't release that war machine on its own. I see. I knew that Sluban was a copycat, but I never was sure if they did outright clone the entire set or not, it was hard to match sets when I was researching for reviews (mainly because there is nothing but corperate for the other brands, unlike Lego). Thanks for clearing that up crossmr. I noticed this on the Sluban F15 review. The Sluban model is just the F15. The Oxford model comes with an F15 and a towing car/truck as well. About the only nice thing out of Sluban is that they do produce individual pieces of everything it seems. I'd like to get my hands on a Sluban set or two just to compare the quality differences. The pictures on their website make it look very obvious that there is a quality difference, but I wonder how severe it is. I don't think you'd find them anywhere in Korea. Maybe when I'm in Japan next month I'll come across some. Some sets they've copied nearly identically, including box art: Sluban vs Oxford Now the only benefit here is that this model is part of Oxford's old line. You can't buy it anywhere in Korea, at least not new that I've found. Which is too bad, it's the only base for the soldiers. I'd buy some Sluban military just to give them a "bad guy" Edited July 13, 2010 by crossmr Quote
Wardancer Posted July 3, 2015 Posted July 3, 2015 I might get told off for reviving an old topic, but I am close to ordering 4 of these sets and I have a few real questions, so maybe this provides the right amount of new context which could allow me the resurrection: Has anyone ever tried: - if the horse can wear a TLG horse helmet? - if the horse can wear a TLG horse barding? - how the big bow looks in a minifig's hands? Does it still look in scale or is it too big? Quote
crossmr Posted July 4, 2015 Posted July 4, 2015 Can't answer the first two, but the bow is definitely big, it looks more like a long bow than a regular lego bow. Quote
Wardancer Posted July 4, 2015 Posted July 4, 2015 Can't answer the first two, but the bow is definitely big, it looks more like a long bow than a regular lego bow. This is what makes it interesting for me. The set decribed here costs only 2 Euro in Germany, a cheap source for alternative weapons. But I wonder if the bow is so big that a minifigs hand would grab the middle of the arrow and not the end of the arrow like it would if the fig were shooting. The horse might be too long for the barding. If you could put a barding on it, it will cover the ugly printed area and make a super high horse for evil factions. Quote
Peppermint_M Posted July 5, 2015 Author Posted July 5, 2015 Woosh, a blast from the past! I never did find that troll figure... I am away from home at the moment, but I can get a pose of figure with the bow in a while, if you really want! It is a lovely set of parts but even harder to find these days. They've really dropped off. Though funnily enough I found a MY Pirate set I think I might review. Gosh, back in the day when I was Queen of the Clone Brands... EDIT: She spoke too soon. First store I looked at. They are worth it honestly. Quote
Wardancer Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 Thanks, that would really interest me. For this insanely low price you get 2 bows which are longer than any other custom I know, 1 sword which is longer than TLGs and 1 forky thingy that is also unique. Thats what I call a good parts pack. If I find a way to use the horse, the deal gets even better! Quote
Peppermint_M Posted July 7, 2015 Author Posted July 7, 2015 A little paint removal and you have a nice tall horse Quote
