drdavewatford Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 Guys 'n' gals, Genuine question here - how do the mods decide what to front-page on the site ? I ask because while reviews of highly anticipated new sets of all themes and stunning MOCs obviously make the front page, I also regularly see what I consider to be nice but not outstanding MOCs and also reviews of older (non-Star Wars) sets on the front page, while epic reviews such as Rufus' recent Star Wars UCS reviews of the Snowspeeder and Y-Wing don't get the exposure they deserve IMHO. The same could be said of some of Big Cam's superb Star Wars reviews of a few months back which were at least as good as the non-Star Wars reviews that were front paged but never got the glory. I'm not looking to be controversial or cause offence - I'd also like to add that I think Eurobricks is an outstanding and invaluable site, and that this is a very minor point, but I am curious. Cheers to all, Dr. D. Quote
Rufus Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 Cheers for the compliment, Dr D! I don't think it's a Star Wars thing, though, more a question of timing. Whilst of course I'd love to have my reviews frontpaged, everyone's excited about the new Prince of Persia sets at the moment, and it's only right that they receive the limelight. The two SW reviews of mine that were frontpaged were both of new 2010 sets that I was lucky enough to get to review before anyone else; one at least wasn't particularly high quality . It is, after all, a news feed, so reviews of old sets won't hit the spotlight unless there isn't much else going on. I'll let the mods give a definitive answer if they wish, but that's how I see it. Svelte Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 Just so you know, there is no strict front-paging policy - news and competitions attract first priority but we do recognised older set reviews of interest and great MOCs too Unfortunately, whilst its true that the Staff of Eurobricks are rewarded for their labours by being regularly showered in chrome bricks, leaked sets from the Vault and massages from LEGO set designers, occasionally real life intervenes and the Staff might have other work or personal concerns that mean not everything gains the attention that some people think it might deserve. To adapt an old showman's adage, you can't please all of the people, all of the time Personally I think EB tends to go on swings and roundabouts - there have been periods of intense SW related frontpaging in the past and I have no doubt those days will come again. Eurobricks Emperor Bonaparte Posted March 31, 2010 Eurobricks Emperor Posted March 31, 2010 I think Rufus and Svelte already summarized things very well. We give first priority to LEGO news, first time set reviews and Eurobricks contest stuff. We try to give each of those 24h-48h on top of the frontpage unless there's another breaking news event arriving sooner. During quieter times we do frontpage MOCs, reviews of older sets, etc... . I agree that the Rufus reviews are great, but a big part of the reason why they are not frontpaged is the PoP stuff, the new Star Wars set, Whack-a-Fig II contest prize announcement, etc... Quote
drdavewatford Posted March 31, 2010 Author Posted March 31, 2010 Thanks for the responses, guys - makes sense, and seems fair enough. Certainly logical that timing plays a big part. It's entirely reasonable that the PoP sets are in the spotlight right now - there does seem to be a lot of interest around them, and they look a lot better than I expected. Keep up the good work ! drdavewatford Posted April 2, 2010 Author Posted April 2, 2010 I note that Rufus' recent Herculanean reviewing efforts have now been frontpaged - nice one, Bonaparte, and richly deserved IMHO ! Reviews (and sets) as good as those need maximum exposure. Dr. D. Quote

In this case we held off over the last day to prevent people confusing April Fools Day news with real news. Now it's over we want to forget about it all ASAP! Unfortunately, whilst its true that the Staff of Eurobricks are rewarded for their labours by being regularly showered in chrome bricks, leaked sets from the Vault and massages from LEGO set designers, occasionally real life intervenes and the Staff might have other work or personal concerns that mean not everything gains the attention that some people think it might deserve. Ahh good times. Quote
