Hi. I really want to build famous 8421, however i don't like the idea of paying more than $300 for the set. Thus, i've come to an idea about building it on my own, using parts from other sets that i have and buying missing ones from BL. While analyzing inventory for 8421, i've found this piece - http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=2847c03 It is fully assembled enclosure with battery inside, which cannot be replaced ? Can this part be replaced with something else ?

Hi.

i own the 8421

and this is really the best part to fit in

of course it would be ok if it will be in any other color

it is also pretty cheap

you can put the pf battery box

but you will need to change many things

This battery box uses 6 AA batteries, which are very easy to be replaced because the whole cover can be removed. Also if you want you can replace this battery box with any other you want, but you will need to modify the set a little to make the new battery box fit in and also make sure the new one has the right type of cable connector.

I hope this helped you.

From the BrickFactory webpage http://www.brickfactory.info/set/index.html , there are 277 individual scans of the instruction sheets. There are these pictures of the battery box area:

There are some 2847c03 "Yellow Electric 9V Battery Boxes, 4 x 14 x 4 with Dark Bluish Gray Base, Complete Assembly" available on Bricklink: http://www.bricklink.com/catalogPG.asp?P=2...3&colorID=3 . You could always use a "normal" Light Gray box and surround it with yellow bricks....

Ok, thanks a lot everyone. My main concern was that this part could use custom sealed batter, which by this time would obviously gone bad. Since this isn't the case, i would try to get an original part then.

This is what I did, although I wish I had put in the newest LG battery in, but this works great as a counter weight as well. This set has a lot of parts, be ready to spend a grip on Bricklink. I am currently building the alternate attachment for the crane, I am waiting on parts from bricklink, my crane attachments are interchangeable.

To my surpise a complete set of parts for that set comes out around 310-320 USD without shipping. Is this an usual situation ? Being new to Lego, i was kinda expecting that buying by parts would be much cheaper, something like $150.

The #8421 Mobile Crane was sold from 2005-2008 for US$150. So, it would be unrealistic to find a used set for that same amount (since it's sold out and there's several years of inflation since then). I actually bought all of the 1,914 individual parts needed from Bricklink to build my 8421, and it's a tough way to go. I ended up spending about US$225 and lots of time/aggravation gathering all the parts. You can use the Peeron.com parts inventory at http://peeron.com/inv/sets/8421-1 to see what is needed. Be prepared to make about 10 ea. different Bricklink orders to get everything, and several weeks of effort.

Here are some sites to monitor to pick up a used, complete 8421 set:

eBay: http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksi...-All-Categories (note the "International Sellers" at the bottom of the list)

Bricklink: http://www.bricklink.com/search.asp?q=8421 .

If you're going to get this set, don't wait too long -- it just gets rarer and more expensive over time.

Well, my impression was that collectors are ready to pay a premium for original box and instructions, so loose parts would be cheaper than complete set. Guess i was wrong. Also, how did you come with 1914 parts, Brickset says it has 1884 parts ? 220$ (with shipping i assume) actually sounds pretty reasonable.

Although the original Set 8421 box says 1,884 pieces (see pic below), the official "LEGO COLLECTOR Collector's Guide" says 1,914 parts. I guess the book is wrong; sorry.
