I've went and watched another movie which I thought was stupid so naturally I feel enclined to write about it...

I watched Daredevil last night since I've had the DVD for almost 6 months, and what a relief I only paid $5 for it off eBay... All I can say is typical modern action movie - more attention was been spent developing the look of the film rather than developing an intelligent story.

I was really tired which is always a useful indicator for determining how much the movie excites me and how good the pacing is. If its really good I'll be absorbed by the movie and forget my lathargic state, but this was definitely not the case with Daredevil. At only 90 minutes it dragged terribly and I constantly kept looking at the timer to see how many minutes had elapsed. So this is a definite indicator that Daredevil didn't thrill me in the least.

The storyline raised a lot of questions that were never answered or maybe I was too tired to absorb them, that being the case they can't have been made really clear anyway. The first that struck me was Elektra. Where did she learn to fight like that? What was her motivation for developing a skill to that degree, obviously she's not the average person that took martial art lessons in her teens. A similiar question can be asked of Bulls Eye and why was he helping King Pin? Why was King Pin Killing people? And I could probably go on back you should have the idea by now.

However, what was registering high on my ridiculous scale was the scene where blind old Matt Murdock sparrs with Elektra. What was wrong with this? The fact that Elektra didn't even ponder why a blind man has these rather impressive abilities and the movie continues as though it never took place. Seems to me this scene was unintelligently added to impress the audience with a fight sequence rather than further the story in an intellegient way.

Sadly that fight sequence, like many in this movie was grotesquely over choregraphed and suffered from the residual effect of excessive wire usage. In other words the movement look so unnatural it resembled a circus act rather than a spontaneous duel. We've seen this kind of fighting in the Matrix. The Matrix is the archetype of sylised action (at least in Western cinematogrpahy anyway) so it can get away it, but everyone else making action movies FIND ANOTHER WAY TO CHOREGRAPH YOUR FIGHT SEQUENCES. Its been done to death now so don't do it anymore because it looks stupid.

The visuals look of the film was quite well done which is common place for movies these days but some of the computer generated imagery could have used some work, like the climbing sequences. The motion of Daredevil's movement looked unconvincingly synthetic and I wonder if some of the sequences, such as wall climbing would have better results if the filmmakers opted for live action. Afterall climbing a wall has been achieved by traditional methods for decades now, and from what I know creating this sequence using computer graphics would probably cost more and take longer to produce than using traditional methods given what was invovled in some of this sequences. I'll also mention the animated sequences reminded me

too much of Spiderman in a maroon suit, so once again the filmmakers have blatantly borrowed from another movie.

One thing I liked about Daredevil was they didn't beat round the bush revealing his true identity, wheras most moveis have miraculous last minute escapes that prevented the removal of the mask until the end of the movie. Or maybe to one or two characters close to the superhero. Lets pat the fimmakers on the back because they managed to come up with this idea before the creators of Spiderman 2 did. Not only that, they also killed off the heroine and the filmmakers came up with that before the creators of Van Helsing. These guys must have been on a roll, but considering everything else this ideas were hardliy redeeming.

Another interesting concept was using rain to create vibrations enabling Daredevil's extraordinary non visual preceptive ability to generate images to enabling him to see without eyes. Although bats have been doing this for millions of years so perhaps its not that impressive.

The final scene in the movie was quite stupid too. Urich has spent hours documenting Daredevil's escapades, then experiences a bout of morality and deletes the entire lot. Urich's keyboard happens to have a print button and delete button side by side, and if he presses the delete button the document starts deleting itself character by character. Urich wouldn't want to make too many errors otherwise he'd endure a slow and frustrating editing process.

Overall Daredevil conformed to the standards of contemporary main stream cinema, high production values and much effort gone into developing a look for the film yet rather pathetic in the intellect department. So to represent my overall opinion as a numerical value I'll give it a 4.5 out of 10. 5 is a pass, and unfortunately I don't think Daredevil deserves to.

Please do not overuse spaces! I was unable to read your review!

There was only one suprise in this movie- the journalist guy being good. Other than that, it wasnt much to see.

The Stan Lee cameo was a fun detail though, being a copy of the event that inspired him to make Daredevil, or so Ive heard.

I voted 6. I saw it years ago but I can remember it quite well.

I think that because of other films doing well, like Spiderman, they made Daredevil in the hope that it too would be a marvel ( ). It seems like they threw this together to get it out quickly which it why there are some faults and confusing parts.

The film as a whole was ok but the basis and storyline were a little weak.

Oh yeah, Phes, could you just edit your post as the double line spacing does stretch it out a little and make it harder to read.

Thanks,

Jon.

I gave this movie a 3 !!

Great review Phes !!! I'm happy you didn't pay more than hat :-D :-P

I really think it was a bad movie !!!

I saw it a long time agao and never saw it since so I am relying on my sole memory !!!

Ben Affleck is a horrible actor, one of the worst of the Hollywood "youngsters" !!! So the movie could not be good !!!

Then Jeni Gardner as Elektra, well... Not sensual enough, not "hispanic" enough either !!

Also the story line is pretty bad, Elektra dies way too easilly !!!!

I likers the opening scene where Urik (Joe Pantoliano) puts fire on the ground and discovers the DD, and the fight scene with Bullseye on his bike was cool.

The Kingpin (Michael Clarck Duncan) and Bullseye (Collin Farrel) were actually the two right actors for the parts !!! The rest of the main characters are not well casted at all !!!

Yoda

Phes, do you want to review another "brilliant" movie called Catwoman ?? :-D :-P

Having read DD since childhood and being obsessed by marvel comics there is no other way.

10 is the score - now if we were talking that hideous version of Hulk I might go lower.

Stay cool X3 is on it's way

You give the movie a perfect score because you read Daredevil comics as a child, despite the possibility the movie might be grossly inferior to the comics? That would equivelant of me liking 4+ Pirate LEGO just because I like SYSTEM Pirate LEGO! But anyway, how does the movie compare to the comics? Are you implying they are just as stupid?

The movie had a terrible story :-X . the guy became blind then he got super powers. What is that about many people are blind but they don't become a superhero. :-P However Electra dying was a great idea. :-D I gave it a 3.

Aye phes, read your review now and I'll say its a good one! :-)

kimt, is giving it a 10 a way for you to "defend" Daredevil? I know when a crowd says they dont like what one likes a normal psychological defense mechanism is to go overboard in how much you like it.

Compared to the comic, Im pretty sure it is far from as good, even though Im more of an anime guy I do know that Stan Lee must be better doing comics than that...

Actually, I can only think of one movie that catches my fancy to give 10, and this movie has so many plot holes it will never come near a 10, If you like it alot I would say 8 as max, but 10- then we are talking Oscar prices and superior masterpieces. ;-)

Well, atleast they removed the outdated idea that just some nuclear waste can give you super powers. :-D
