Hi guy's!

I was just browsing the LEGO web when I thought of a question.

Do people even buy the set's for the set's themselves?

Or do they just buy them for the fig's?

I think why some people are buying the set's for thier fig's is because of the growing detail in fig's these day's.

I was thinking on buying POP quest against time just for Nizam

What are your thoughts on this?

What do YOU think?

For me, it's often the opposite: I buy the sets for parts, and sell the figs! I'm thinking of themes like Toy Story, SpongeBob, etc that have sets with useful parts but figs that I have no use for.

But yes, sometimes a nice minifig could drive me to buy I set I wouldn't have bought otherwise

I tink a perfect example of this is the new Slave 1, people who have already gotten the very simillar earlier edition from 2006, are jumping up and down for this new one just for the awesome figs.

Hhhmmmm............ interesting.

I agree about Toy story/Spongebob set's having useless figs but instead of selling I usually swap with my friend's (I rip them off because I have mor experiance in LEGO than they'll ever have  ) but I'm not really the biggest MOCer ever so I don't buy sets for peices.

It's both really. I bought the Battle of Alamut for the black minifigure because I really wanted one but I also wanted a large amount of tan pieces, as well as the new darker sand colored bricks. I also wanted the new arches etc. I don't think I would buy a set specifically for a single minifigure; if the set wasn't alluring on its own. The only instance of this I can of is when I bought the 'Monster 4' board game for all of the minifigure heads that came with it.

Either way there's nothing wrong with buying a set just for one purpose. If you just want the minifigures then there's no real harm in buying the set because let's face it, there's no such thing as having too many bricks. If you just want the bricks then you could always sell the minifigures or just hold on to them. You never really know when they'll be useful.

Most of the time I get it for the minifigs, some of the sets coming out now have alot of holes and weird designs. Sometimes it's for parts, but all sets that I get eventually are taken apart except for the Death Star.

I love sets, so that I keep even extra pieces in labeled sachets.

So... I buy sets for sets, and when I buy a set, I consider it in all its parts, including minifigs!

A set with beautiful minifigs surely has an added value.

I do both. It depends on the set. Some sets I like only the minifigs, the rest of the set would go into my parts for MOC collection. Other sets I like the whole thing and keep them intact.

I am one of this crazy people who don't buy on Bricklink, so yes, I buy many sets just for minifigs. Like The battlepack from Indiana Jones, Gold Tower from Exoforce, And of course any Castle set to have Trorcs in it!

I do because some sets are just not all that great but have great figs and you geat some nice parts so its all good.

And who buys battle packs for the set and not the figs?

Great topic.

9 out of 10 times I get a set for the model itself, not the figs. I'm all for the playability factor in a set - lots of functions or play features is a big selling point for me  However, if I can't decide between two sets, I strongly take the included parts (moc potential) and minifigs into consideration.

Don't get me wrong, I love minifigures, but when there are so many great sets out there I just can't afford to make my purchases solely based on the little guys.

Sometimes....

Like, Luke's Landspeeder... I think it was worth it because of the figs... in other words, I wouldn't have bought it for the figs, but the figs made it worth the price (IMO).

I guess the answer is no... I don't buy just for minifigs, ever, they just add value to what I am buying.

Normally I don't buy sets just because of one or more minifigs. I cannot remember when I last made an exception and ignored this principle. I must admit that I'd break this rule if I really wanted to get a minifig. I can't remember if I've ever broken it.

By the way, what about minifig sets? Do I want the set or just the minifigs in it if I buy it? *Just kidding!* Don't take such a remark seriously!

The success of the creator line (which have no figures) should, at least somewhat, answer your question.

I think why some people are buying the set's for thier fig's is because of the growing detail in fig's these day's.

I'm not much of a fan of the increased detail in the figures. They don't fit well with the simpler printing of the prior figures.

I think there is a magnet set with him in it coming out soon, which could save you some money.

This is a great and very interesting topic, awesomebrick!

I nearly always buy a set because of the whole set - so even the minifigs, but not only them, but even vehicles, buildings and accessory.

It's only sometimes with very small sets (esp. Impulse sets) that I buy some of them, collect the bricks and only use the minifigs which I most of the time then put together indivdually.

But the most of the time - esp. when sets are more than 10 Euros - I really don't buy them only because of the minifigs. That would be much too expensive. When I only want the minifigs of an expensive set, I try the customer's service or/and Ebay.

I would never buy a set just for the figs (excluding battle packs). I would like to but I don't have enough money for that.

Instead I see a minifig as part of a set it is a factor in whether I would buy it or not, just but not a very big one.

I guess I'm in a group of people who purchased the 2006 Slave 1 and are desperately hoping the new Boba Fett minifig will be in a good quality magnet set.

The same goes for Grievous's Starfighter.

Good Topic.

I've been thinking about the LEGO purchases I've made, and I don't think I've ever purchased a set just for the minifigures. The Battle Packs are the only exception I can think of, but don't really count for this discussion as the minifigures are the purpose of those sets.

That being said, the minifigures are still an extremely important aspect of the set. I have passed on sets before because the minifigures didn't excite me (7680 The Twilight for example). And due to the absence of minifigures the Creator sets don't give me the same rush as the System-scale sets.

The new Slave I is really bothering me. I love the 6209 version from a few years back, but the minifigures in the new set are great. I don't need the new Slave I, but I want the minifigures. However, I don't have the financial freedom to be paying $70 for 3 minifigures! I'll keep my fingers crossed for a magnet set, but this will end up being a wait-for-the-sale purchase from me.

edit:

I didn't even see your comments Lord Arjay before I posted, but it sounds like we have similar thoughts on this matter

Ultimately the minifigs. Since I am too lazy and paranoid to order from BrickLink and Ebay for minifigs. That means minifigs will only be around to me for a short while. And a shelf can fit more minifigs than sets. So I will get one of the set for the set. And if its inexpensive, I will get at least another for the minifigs.
