Flatfoot Thompsen Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 I recently came up with the idea to glue my Lego sets together. Do you think I should?
Peppermint_M Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 Um... Why? The whole point of Lego is to take it apart and build something new. Glueing will defeat the purpose. Using the wrong sort of adhesive could damage the plastic and stuck together sets would be worth nothing to anyone... Not to mention the uproar that it will cause. I will be keeping an eye on this thread to make sure it doesn't get out of hand. Please fill us in on why you think glueing your sets is a good idea?
LuxorV Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 Personally, I don't see a great use in glue-ing LEGO sets, unless you tend to make them fall too often . Or are you talking about display-only sets, like they do in LEGO shops and parks? Perhaps a few more words on why you got this idea could be useful in directing the discussion and will get you more useful advices LuxorV
BobaFett2 Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 Here's a little anecdote: McDonald's used to give out Throwbots in happy meals glued together. My friend threw them away. Why? Because they were useless. The same applies to normal LEGO. Many functions will not work as well. If something breaks, you have to get the glue off to replace it. My friend ripped a fingernail off because he glued a part to a large baseplate and forgot. I would never glue them unless I had enough to make a LEGO-Scale statue.
Mariann Asanuma Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 Being as I glue LEGO on a regular basis I will tell you this -- don't do it unless you never want to take it apart again! Gluing LEGO, especially depending on the type of glue, makes them useless for anything but display purposes. Certain parts like hinges I don't even glue because they will break. The kind of glue I use, I don't even recommend to anyone unless they know what they are doing as it is toxic. You need plenty of ventilation, special glue applicators, and special training to work with it.
Rick Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 No, are you nuts? Seriously, as has been said before, in my view, it defeats the whole purpose of LEGO: (1) Build, (2) Take apart, (3) Sort, (4) GOTO 1. Besides, if something doesn't stay together like you expect it to, I actually enjoy working with the limitations of LEGO and find ways to make it sturdier.
Modulex Guy Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 No, do not glue, LEGO is meant to be used without glue, thats what separates LEGO from other building type model kits etc.
General Redwater Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 NO!!! DON`T GLUE!!!! If you glue them together, you can`t take them apart; and if you can`t take them apart, what happens if you need one peice that you had glued? Well, I`ll answer that for you........................................you can`t get it out. - General Redwater
Fugazi Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 Not to mention that you turn an eternally recyclable toy into a plain boring toy, that you will be able to display and dust but not to modify, trade or resell. Knowing more about your motivations would help us give you better advice on how to avoid any extreme actions!
dr_spock Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 I recently came up with the idea to glue my Lego sets together. Do you think I should? If you don't plan to ever take them apart again or if you have small children who may swallow small parts...
Milan Posted May 11, 2010 Posted May 11, 2010 I would not glue them. Maybe if you are preparing sets to be just for show, static and unplayable, and if you need to travel a lot with them...maybe just then. But as other said, it is not Lego anymore...it becomes just another toy, with no challenge.
badboytje88 Posted May 11, 2010 Posted May 11, 2010 (edited) DO NOT DO IT! Edited May 11, 2010 by badboytje88
Commodore Hornbricker Posted May 11, 2010 Posted May 11, 2010 The thought of glueing Lego together makes me feel sick to my stomach. There are wonderful model kits that exist that are ment to be glued together.....The magic of Lego is that its a building system. DON"T DO IT!
Peppermint_M Posted May 11, 2010 Posted May 11, 2010 Mr Flatfoot, are you planning on making a reply or do I have to mark this down as Trolling? 24 Hour warning!
MacK Posted May 11, 2010 Posted May 11, 2010 Why not? Laissez-faire. If you're never going to use the parts again but need them glued together for what ever reason what's stopping you?
happymark Posted May 11, 2010 Posted May 11, 2010 I agree.! no glue. However, maybe OT, I do have some LEGO (from sets or MOC) which I keep it for certain long time. I guess everybody does the same? No, are you nuts? Seriously, as has been said before, in my view, it defeats the whole purpose of LEGO: (1) Build, (2) Take apart, (3) Sort, (4) GOTO 1. Besides, if something doesn't stay together like you expect it to, I actually enjoy working with the limitations of LEGO and find ways to make it sturdier.
Big Cam Posted May 12, 2010 Posted May 12, 2010 I recently came up with the idea to glue my Lego sets together. Do you think I should? No, buy a model if you want to glue.
Spyder Posted May 12, 2010 Posted May 12, 2010 Listen, even if he doesn't reply, let this be a warning to all others- Do NOT glue you Lego, it's what sets it apart from other model kits!!! However Flatfoot, if you really want to, what's stopping you? Do it... ...and destroy your Lego.
lowbike1 Posted May 12, 2010 Posted May 12, 2010 I glue minifigures together, but only the ones my kids play with, otherwise they take them apart constantly and eventually the torso bottom and arms start to crack, I dont glue them all though because like everyone says, Taking them apart is part of the fun and if the kids break a couple, I get to buy more
LuxorV Posted May 12, 2010 Posted May 12, 2010 Listen, even if he doesn't reply, let this be a warning to all others Indeed, this can be a 'warning', or at least a reference discussion topic for the future. But, we do not like to have topics thrown in just to start a discussion while the poster who made the original question does not partecipate at all. LuxorV
Peppermint_M Posted May 12, 2010 Posted May 12, 2010 Right, seems Mr Flatfoot hasn't come and joined in this discussion he started within my 24 hour warning, I shall lock this thread. PM me or some Staff or another Fellow if you can really think of any reason for it to stay open.
