First - that image is gigantic, possibly the largest I've seen posted here - one has to wait for it to load on even a good broadband connection (in fact I didn't, I pressed stop). I recommend removing or resizing it.

As regards your topic, I sort based on a combination of part size and "category" (e.g. pin, axle connector, pin connector, brick, liftarm, cogs and other items for axles). I have a couple of large crates for random "bionicle" or technic assemblies. I haven't had too much issue yet though I wouldn't like to upset all the components :) If I want a specific part/colour and it's not immediately obvious in the compartment it should be in, I empty out the compartment onto a tray - a small price to pay for quicker sorting of disassembled/mixed parts.

You should be able to find those trays at any arts and crafts / art supply store. Or, you can find them at hardware or sporting goods stores.

Sorting pieces is a huge hassle. The multitude of different connectors, gears, beams, axles, etc. makes it extremely difficult to sort. For now, I only have two small plastic organizers for my Technic, and the rest is still mixed in with the BIG BIN. (Working on organizing that currently. Whew, takes so long!) I sort my Technic partly by function, partly by part. For instance, I have all my 2, 3, 4, and 5 axles in one spacer, the mid sized axels in the next and so on. However I do keep certain parts separate, such as bushings, pins, and axle/pin perpendicular connectors, since I have a lot of those and more often than not I use them. Steering is all grouped into one, so is suspension. Once I finish organizing all my System bricks, we'll see how many containers I have leftover to sort all the Technic in.

I am using 4 big drawer cases with 60 drawers each to store Technic, Plates, Tiles and Slopes...

And I use 4 large suitcases-like tray boxes for PF, hinges, and miscellaneous,

And few more giant boxes for Bricks and everything else separated by color and functions

Zblj, where did you get these treys? http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/zblj/Col...on/technic2.jpg They are exactly what I need.

I use similar trays to keep most of my collection (technic and otherwise) organized with various drawers for all the large stuff (I have a drawer just for technic friction pegs for example and another one for 2 x 2 bricks)

The trays I use dont have the movable dividers but they come in multiple sizes with different sized compartments in each.

For those in Australia, check out Fischer Plastic Products (they should be available at your local Bunnings) and they are perfect for storing LEGO.

How do you sort your Technic pieces? Im currently working on organizing my pieces by part and it has taken a very long amount of time. Post pictures of your organized/sorted Technic workstations. Or talk about the frustrations of sorting.

For those amounts of parts I would use a drawer system on the building desk, sorting parts by function.

For larger amounts, put the ones you won't use immediately into freezer bags for deeper storage. There are big drawer systems to house the bags, but for very deep storage you can stack crates.

I use one stack of drawer units as input drawers, one drawer of which is for bags of mixed Technic parts. When a drawer gets full I sort those parts inot the deep and shallow stores.

This should work OK up to about 1 million bricks, but it takes a long time to keep it working!

Yes, the Stack-On brand of parts bins (shown above) works well for me. They will hold almost all of your Technic parts, and the clear sides makes it unnecessary to label the bins or waste time "hunting and pecking". They come in a variety of styles and shapes: http://www.akro-mils.com/industrial/coupon_display.asp?id=99 .

One important thing to note about the time it takes to sort your lego. Yes, it takes a LONG time but the time you save by not having to rummage for ages to find the elements you want is immence. You should also find that the standard of your MOCs goes up as well as the colour co-ordination. It is very tedious I know but it is worth it so keep at it. I used those stanley storage trays with the individual boxes, they are great!

I sort in two stages. First by type (bricks, plates, Technic, Train, Minifig, Roof bricks, wheels etc...) into a bag each for the sort, all type bags into the type input drawers (except if I have 20 of one piece from a set sort, when I'll give them a bag of their own). Then I sort the input drawers if they get full. If I'm looking for parts when building MOCs, I might remember that there are some of the required type in the input drawer, so I don't raid the sorted bricks, saving time by not doing the second sort. I tend to do the sorting better for type I use less often because high use of plates would waste more time sorting if I'll use them soon.

I also keep a few drawers of my mini-cupboards for types that I use all the time, e.g. a 1-litre drawer for stacks of black 1xn plates, and a drawer of mixed axles and a large bag of all the types of pegs (with small supplies of sorted pegs for when I want 20 of a type). I have dedicated supplies of bricks for big projects too. My Technic parts are moving to a deep store, shallow store system now that I have enough to warrant it.

I bought some tray organizers, they are working out perfect. But I did not get enough pf them so I have to go pick some more up soon. Ill take a picture once everything is organized.

I work purely with technic. After organisation i ended up with trays, and more once i realised i did not have enough.
