General Redwater Posted May 30, 2010 Posted May 30, 2010 That certainly is a cute bird. Its amazing that it let you pick it up. But what happens if nobody claims it? Quote
Lordofdragonss Posted May 30, 2010 Posted May 30, 2010 Yay for animal helpers! Great job! I hope this little birdie will find his family! Quote
BobaFett2 Posted May 30, 2010 Posted May 30, 2010 Good job helping it! My cat dragged in a sparrow two days ago, and it was still alive so we shooed the cat away. My mom picked up the bird and put it outside though, so we didn't help it much. Quote
prateek Posted May 30, 2010 Posted May 30, 2010 Yay for JD! I like pigeons, so this is nice to see Quote
JimBee Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 Racing pigeons? How does that work? Wouldn't they fly away? Anyway, nice find. Hopefully someone will come around and claim it. Quote
EspEth12 Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 I didn't know people raced pigeons I imagine that would be hard to train them not to fly off. Good job on helping it. I would keep it as a pet. Quote

I didn't know people raced pigeons I imagine that would be hard to train them not to fly off. Good job on helping it. I would keep it as a pet. Pigeons are trained to fly to their home "loft" and once they are ready, many are taken to a specific point. These are then released to race to their home. The winner is the first of the pigeons to return to their loft. They can sometimes get lost, due to a variety of reasons to do with our modern world. It is a semi popular hobby, training the birds and then taking them to race. Quote
escortmad79 Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 The person behind our house keeps homing pigeons & they keep cr*pping all over the car & washing on the line! If it's one of theirs, you can keep the dirty sky rat! Quote
The Legonater Posted June 2, 2010 Posted June 2, 2010 She seems to exercise by flying in the other side of the coop and scaring the chickens. Don't know how she does it though, considering the gaps are all covered. Maybe it'll help you find how bugs get in closed light fixtures... Quote
Wout Posted June 2, 2010 Posted June 2, 2010 Very nice of you. I had once also a pigeon in our garden which was thirsty just when I give water to the flowers. He/She tried to drink it, so I made a special drinking plate for her/him and also gave some bread. The pigeon was then another half hour in the garden resting and them flew away. Quote
-JD- Posted June 6, 2010 Author Posted June 6, 2010 Thats good Wout! The Pigeon got picked up a couple of days ago by the owner. She was bred this year and had gone missing with two other pigeons one month ago! She probably landed around our area and managed by herself until the cold weather closed in. Anyway, I'm glad she is 'home' again! Quote
Dan the Brickman Posted June 6, 2010 Posted June 6, 2010 good to hear it this story had a happy ending! Quote
Corvus Posted June 8, 2010 Posted June 8, 2010 Cool! It's always nice to take care of a live bird for a day or two- compared to finding dead ones outside the window, as is usually the case. I help take care of injured raptors at a local museum, so they're not quite as cuddly. Quote
