Dwarfinator Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 (edited) Hey there. The past few days I'v been working on a Lava Monster magma river/nest MOC, and I've been having trouble making the magma. I tried brick built (Kinda like mosaic) but I'm still not happy with it. I've run out of ideas on how to make realistic magma, so I need some help. Another thing is, I can't decide what color it should be. I kinda based it off of the level in Super Mario Sunshine. The last level, there's a huge cavern of lava, witch is yellow and orange with specks of white. Edited June 2, 2010 by Dwarfinator Quote
Commodore Hornbricker Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 I would think tons of orange and yellow trans round 1x1 plates....that doesn't work? Quote

user Posted June 2, 2010 Posted June 2, 2010 You could always use SNOT and make a wall of red/orange/yellow turn it sideways and build on top of it. Quote
Dwarfinator Posted June 2, 2010 Author Posted June 2, 2010 Well, I tried that too. It's my best try, but I'm still not satisfied. Quote
squiz Posted June 2, 2010 Posted June 2, 2010 I dont know whether you have seen these star wars mocs but they have some good Lava effects. This is one from Darth Yoda and this is one from DarthPineapple (hope they dont mind me linking them!) Quote
LuxorV Posted June 5, 2010 Posted June 5, 2010 Maybe combining the SNOT/wall, round 1x1 plates and cheese slopes' techniques could be helpful. I think some of the best ripple-like effect can be acheived with the cheese slopes, while the 'calm' ponds with the white-hot center will be best with the round plates or wall styles. The main problem is always the same: having enough parts to complete them. It is sad, but often we have to realise we do not have them yet, and the only option (apart for postponing the MOC) is making an order for those parts (Pick-A-Brick, BrickLink or other) Quote
The Crazy One Posted June 5, 2010 Posted June 5, 2010 I have been trying to recreate a lava flow aswell, but could someone tell me what is SNOT? Excuse my ignorance. Quote

The Crazy One Posted June 5, 2010 Posted June 5, 2010 Studs Non On Top Thanks LuxorV! Years of confusion ended. Quote
Sandy Posted June 8, 2010 Posted June 8, 2010 Thanks LuxorV! Years of confusion ended. Well, the grammatically correct meaning is Studs Not On Top. But I just wanted to add that SNOT should not be confused with tiles, which are basically just studless pieces. SNOT is when you use a brick or other piece sideways or upside down. As for your lava-problem, Dwarfinator, remember that contrast is your friend when making fire and lava and burning things. Use all warm colors from dark red to yellow, even adding white to the "hottest" places. That's how I'd do it, at least. Quote

I certainly have enough white. :P I seem to have solved my problem, but until I post the MOC, it will remain secret. Quote
Bfahome Posted June 8, 2010 Posted June 8, 2010 You could also have a few smallish rocks jutting out of the lava. I'm nowhere near professional when it comes to building stuff, but I think it's a nice detail that could save you at least a few tiles (or whatever you're making the lava with). Quote
Capt.JohnPaul Posted June 15, 2010 Posted June 15, 2010 (edited) Well, maybe you could get flat tiles and on sticker paper print out your design of magma you want. You (if you like really weird stuff) could get water, and use food dye and make all these passage ways for it to flow. (just some how seel the cracks in the bricks. VBBN Posted July 11, 2010 Posted July 11, 2010 I'm surprised no one had recommended Brickbuilt lava still looks better than that though. Looking forward to seeing what you built. Quote
VBBN Posted July 11, 2010 Posted July 11, 2010 This one here; http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=1349-1 There are two kinds available here, but I don't know if your willing to pay 40 and 50 bucks a pop for 32x32 baseplates. Quote
castlestrike666 Posted July 13, 2010 Posted July 13, 2010 Naah, I think it's kinda rubbish Maybe a 'nice-to-have', but not a 'nice-to-use' plate Brickbuilt stays the best! Quote
Defferwa Posted July 13, 2010 Posted July 13, 2010 use trans red, yellow and orange lego and built it sideways(im pretty sure theirs a name for that) but to save bricks, use a couple 1x4,1x2, and 1x3 bricks to create a rock effect. Quote
