Hey,

Just wondered what you guys do with boxes once the set is built? I keep mine, but does anyone...throw them away or anything.

I'd like Lego to make boxes which can be folded afterwards to store the fully-built set. Safe a lot of space, and stop a lot of dust.

Until now I have kept all my boxes ( :-$ ...since September last year), but when there is not enough space for them in a time I will only keep the Harry Potter boxes and the ones from important or bigger sets. ;-)

Up until I had to move I kept every box. But after finally deciding to dump them, and having a knee-high pile of cardboard in my room, I now opt to abandon them asap.

And now I hardly feel any emotional attachment to Lego-packaging anymore.

I've asked this question in the past too re. how people store their sets. I store all of my sets in the original box. I've got huge moving boxes packed with sets. There's got to be a better way as these boxes do take up a lot of space and are hard to find when you're looking for an old set. I just hate mixing pieces from numerous sets because when you attempt to build an old model, finding the pieces becomes so difficult. I do like saving the boxes for both the art/imagery as well as alternate models on the back of the box.

A collapsible box would be a great idea though. I've also noticed that some of the new larger sets require you to rip the back sides of the box to lift the top/cover. Don't like this at all (7893 Passenger Plane is an example). There must be a better way.

I keep all the boxes of sets I buy now I have got some large cadboard boxes in my attic full of boxes.

I try to put the smaller ones inside the larger ones to reduce space.

I wish TLC would invent a box that folds flat to store easily without ripping the sides.

I keep most of mine in a cupboard, but if I buy a set for parts I tend to chuck it out.

Jon.

I keep boxes for almost all sets. The only ones I don't are ones I got for parts and have multiple copies of. It does become a storage issue, though.

Bin them.

Except:

Kids have harry potter castle box with all their harry pot stuff in and a belville castle box with all the belville in.

And I have kept a couple of starwars boxes that house my collection of instructions.

I have 3 big plastic 'under the bed' boxes of the stuff. I couldn't possibly store all the boxes as well.

I throw mine away. I used to hold on to one or two of the big ones (like the AT-At or UCS boxes or whatever) but only because I used them to hold all my instruction manuals. But then my manuals outgrew the boxes, and I had to switch to a more conventional filing system. :-)

But here's what I figure: the only reason I would see for keeping the boxes is if I thought I might re-sell the sets someday. Having the original box always seems to up the value of something for a collector. But the fact is, I don't think I'll ever sell my sets. At most I would pass them on to my own kids or something, since that's how I got my first Lego (hand-me-down from my uncle). Even the Star Wars sets, which for now I just keep assembled, will probably eventually be broken down and returned to the mix.

So keeping the boxes seems a waste of space for me. Why take up space with cardboard when you can fill it with more Lego? :-D

I used to throw all the boxes in the basement, but then we got a termite problem and found out that the termites were all living in the empty Lego boxes in the basement. Now I throw them out after I'm done building the set.

Ickelpete, they don't need to invent one. The store Ikea already uses boxes that do that. I keep a few, only ones I like, but I keep instructions in a bucket.

I have no intention of selling my sets so I've not kept any boxes. Again storage is an issue. I have kept the box from the AT-TE (top folds open) as I keep all the instructions in it. Also, the lttle plastic boxes that SW mini sets come it make for handy spares storage.

I used to have all my sets on display but now find they take up way too much space so most are in collapsable boxes, grouped by SW episode. Only the really big sets like Cloud City are still out.

Everytime I get a big one (ATAT, RGS etc) I use it for all my pieces.

I throw all the others away, with the exception of the ISD which I just didn't have the heart to do (it's so big)

I was keeping all of mine. I even had the boxes from my childhood (8860, 8841, 8845, etc...). But I live in a small flat, and my "lego room" is right now invaded by a surprize and welcome guest for the last 9 months (my baby daughter..:-) ) and I throw them away (every single one of more than 400) to make room for the new member of our family. Cutting and keeping back sides of the boxes (the ones showing alternative model ideas) would be a very nice idea, which, unfortunately, I didn't realize at that time.

Regards,

Sel

I tried to keep all my boxes but have gone through one move too many for all but my favs to survive. As others have said... the new packaging isn't as inspiring anyway (in my opinion).

God Bless,

I can't keep the boxes because of the lake of space. But when the boxes can be opened on the top, I keep them to strore my LEGO by theme.

Here, it is a castle box, all the different sets are well separated. And all the separation are made with other LEGO boxes! :-P

Also, I have a technic box with a very usefull original system to strore my extra pieces
