(from http://www.flickr.com/photos/hartnupj/3014730901/ and http://safa.tv/447,12-famous-structures-in...-in-lego,9.html )" Yum - looks gorgeous ! And while they're at it, perhaps they'll give us the Tower of London as well !
zyrex Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 Wow, by the sounds of it, I am going to want this one!
danim Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 going by the measurements and my calculations this lego model is going to be in 1/45th scale which is reasonably close to minifig scale, this is going to be an amazing set
BrickWild Posted June 12, 2010 Posted June 12, 2010 A tower bridge?! HOLY COW! Will it have an opening span, like the real thing?
squiz Posted June 12, 2010 Posted June 12, 2010 A tower bridge?! HOLY COW!Will it have an opening span, like the real thing? Sounds like it will, someone has just translated the description properly on brickset and it mentions that the bridge will raise and lower Also sounds like the green bike will be a motorbike.
blueandwhite Posted June 12, 2010 Posted June 12, 2010 Perfect choice for a landmark! And more than any of the other choices, this set sounds like it could be reasonably close to minifig scale. While I don't expect the 1:50 or so scale that I associate with minifigs, I could see 1:100 being very possible. It would still allow minifigs and vehicles on the bridge. The fact that it apparently comes with a cab is a nice bonus. I haven't purchased any of the other landmarks but this is really a difficult decision.
Superkalle Posted June 12, 2010 Posted June 12, 2010 Yeah, but were are you supposed to place such a monster? I'm completely swamped allready with sets, and now one that's 1 meter (!) long.
AFOL SF Posted June 12, 2010 Posted June 12, 2010 First time I've heard of this Tower Bridge set was about a week ago, from a Lego store employee. They already have it on hand to build as a store display. No word as to when it'll be out for public display. I suggest for those who lives near a Lego store to keep an eye open if you'd like to see this new set in person...
Jargo Posted June 12, 2010 Posted June 12, 2010 I was watching a documentary on telly about London bridges last night. I realised how ugly Tower bridge is. How over designed it is. Typical Victorian ostentation. I'm sure the set will be impressive but it's not for me.
BrickWild Posted June 13, 2010 Posted June 13, 2010 Will the bridge be for expert builders of either 16 or 18 years?
Superkalle Posted June 13, 2010 Posted June 13, 2010 Will the bridge be for expert builders of either 16 or 18 years? That's a bit of an odd question. Why do you ask? (And I guess you have read about the huge size and 4200 pieces, so allready there you have a clue )
allanp Posted June 13, 2010 Posted June 13, 2010 If it does have an opening span I wonder if it will be motorised!
spid3r Posted June 14, 2010 Posted June 14, 2010 10214 TOWER BRIDGE has appeared on Amazon Japan.October 1, 2010 Retail Price 39,900yen : about US$438- Amazon Price 28,550yen : about US$314- Not a picture Amazon Japan http://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B003Q6BQOY/ref=...5179&sr=1-4 My Blog http://legojapan.seesaa.net/article/152843517.html Cant wait hopefully it will match with my taj mahal and eiffel tower
astra Posted June 14, 2010 Posted June 14, 2010 I don't think the bridge will be motorized, somehow I don't think that fits the Exclusive range. But I sure will be saving up for this one. Never regretted buying the Eiffel Tower and this will probably look great next to it! (although I don't think it is the same scale)
Fugazi Posted June 14, 2010 Posted June 14, 2010 I don't think the bridge will be motorized, somehow I don't think that fits the Exclusive range. We did get a motorized Grand Carousel, so it wouldn't be totally unheard of. But I'm not sure I would want the price be driven up even more by adding power functions to the set.
blueandwhite Posted June 14, 2010 Posted June 14, 2010 The question I hav is whether the bridge will include the suspension cables that attach to the smaller towers at either end of the bridge. Without the smaller towers Tower Bridge just won't look right, but if they include all 4 towers I just can't imagine this being minifig scale. Does LEGO include the extra two towers and make the bridge very small (like the Taj and Eiffel Tower) or do they forego the land-based towers and just focus on the large towers, the upper walkway and the bascule mechanism? I'm kind of hoping for the latter as I would rather have this as close to minifig scale as possible.
Rick Posted June 14, 2010 Posted June 14, 2010 Without the smaller towers Tower Bridge just won't look right, but if they include all 4 towers I just can't imagine this being minifig scale. 'Minifig scale' is commonly a downsized version of what minifig scale would be according to (for example) the height of a minifig. Especially houses tend to be relatively small. So, it is very well possible that the bridge will be suitable for minifigs, but nevertheless not entirely 'correctly' scaled. Although I doubt I will get this set, I can't wait to see it.

Although I doubt I will get this set, I can't wait to see it. This is true, however with all four towers the bridge would be way too small to even force the issue. Tower Bridge is over 200 metres long. A minifig is about 1:50 scale. If the set is 1 metre in length, then if all four towers are included the scale is closer to 1:200 which is forcing the issue for even a minifig. If on the other hand LEGO drops the two shoreline towers that the bridge is suspended to the bridge could be built closer to 1:100 which isn't unreasonable for a minifig. I'm kind of hoping for the latter as it also leaves open the challenge of building your own shoreline towers while keeping this open for figs, something that is very important to me as an AFOL.

If they already have it, my guess is that it might be revealed at BrickWorld this weekend. They revealed the minifig-scale Death Star at BrickWorld '08.

Cwetqo Posted June 14, 2010 Posted June 14, 2010 It will surely be in minifig scale. The brige is proportionaly longer then higher and would look strange without outer towers. My best guess is that it will be in "corrected minifig scale", similar like above mentoned death star (now THAT is out of scale). Road must be around 16 studs wide (to allow 2 city vehicles to pass)and everything else could be adjusted . And on one meter long structrure even menifig will not look so unproportional. The other option is that bus and taksi will be in microfig scale (like those on creator ferry). I never saw any minifigures mentioned (although I dont know how they would do bikes then.

After reading the dimensions of the set and comparing them to the actual bridge I expect that we probably won't be seeing the outer towers. The actual bridge is 286 metres long, whereas the two pedestrian bridges at the top of the bridge are only 43 metres high. If we consider that the set is 102 cm x 45 cm, it would seem that LEGO has decided to simply build the two centre towers and forego the smaller towers which have the cables anchored to them. If the bridge includes all four towers and is still 45 cm high the proportions would be wonky. I guess we'll have to wait and see at Brickworld.
David Thomsen Posted June 16, 2010 Posted June 16, 2010 (edited) This sounds fantastic... I wonder if the vehicles will be vintage, or modern? When I think of a London bus, I can only think of the old red 'routemaster' bus, so I hope it's nothing too moden. I was hoping they'd eventually produce something minifig scale larger than a modular building that isn't anything to do with Star Wars, and this sounds like it. Or course, what I really wanted was a six-story modular building 'tower' to add to my modular range, but I might buy this anyway... if there's absolutely nothing else to buy in 2011. That's the only way I can afford it. Edited June 16, 2010 by David Thomsen
Jasper Joppe Geers Posted June 16, 2010 Posted June 16, 2010 Sounds promising! Looking forward to see this one!
