Oh my...

Now that we have some better pictures I can see the sheer size of this thing!

Its huge and would look far too large beside my other ships but I don't care I'm getting it anyway!

Its amazing!

The amount of detail is outstanding and if none told me this was a set I would have mistaken it for an exellent MOC!

It would also be the first UCS set that I own!

But it will leave my wallet feeling hungry...

Bad news. Very bad news. :hmpf_bad:

Look the video at 2'37''.

It seems that there is one knob for each wing.

Indeed, when the designer turns the knob, only the left wing rise (since the right wing is already up).

They really could have make something like 7191 with one knob for 2 wings (on the 7191 it is even one knob for 4 wings !!).

:sadnew:

Well spotted!

Perhaps a single large knob (no pun intended  ) might have put the mechanism under too much strain and not have looked as aesthetically pleasing. There have been complaints from Lego consumers in the past about UCS models being unstable, fragile or not internally strong enough to take their own mass (Star Destroyer nose, Y-Wing engines, X-Wing wings, Tantive IV engine block etc.). Could be (as this is designed as a display piece) they've compromised the wing feature to ensure more durability. It certainly doesn't impact on the two display options available to us and lets face it, 'swooshability' doesn't seem a priority inherent in the design.

On the bright side it also gives MOCers something to modify!

Knob? Surely already paying 250 on this it deserves its own motor for a real retractable landing gear and the folding of the wings. This is just screaming for modifications. :classic:

I found something

Well, it now becomes clear why the TLG Shuttle is so very similar to the fan-built one as discovered before. Just one question now: Did the polish fan (DMAC I think) who did the first version get credits on the box or in the instructions. We'll have to wait and see I guess.

I dont think this has been posted yet so here is the official description:

i can confirm that to fold the wings together with one mechanism put a lot of strain on the gears and tech axles so i decided to just fold them by hand. after seeing the video i think that i can now destroy my shuttle and use the parts for summat else

Love the size and the 4 seater cockpit - however, with no interior, it basically is - to me at least - a 260 dollar paperweight. I mean, c'mon - it's a shuttle. Interior is kind of the point...Would have preferred a smaller set with an actual shuttle component to a very pretty but very pricey UCS set.

As far as stickers go I can see several inside the cockpit there's at least 4 "controls" stickers and of course theirs the UCS display card. Some of the comments on the youtube video make me laugh. One of them said "It's not big enough :(".

For once I am glad that I was wrong...wrong about the cockpit being only a two seater. Four seat cockpit FTW!!

Rear laser cannon...check!!

I understand the reason for no hull interior (an interior would compromise the structural stability of the shuttle) and not being able to deploy/retract the wings simultaneously (one mechanism most likely would cause too much strain as cavegod has mentioned). Obviously I would prefer these options to be available, but I can see past them and I am okay with it.

The only thing that I have a gripe with is not having a boarding ramp. I was wrong about this too. Having a ramp that would serve as a decorative piece at a minimum would be good enough for me, even if it didn't lead to an interior. But, I can see past this as well.

This shuttle will be transporting my Imperial dignitaries and Rebel Scum by the end of this year!

Wow, the Lambda shuttle looks stunning! It's one of my most favorite ships in the Star Wars universe, and this LEGO set recreates it perfectly.

I love the features, especially the opening cockpit, and how it's large enough to fit 4 minifigs!

The only thing I wish the set had was an interior. So much could've fit in there...

Its definitely beautiful but I dont think this will take priority over any other set though just because its huge. I not usually collect USC cause it cost heaps.

Yes, just because of its sheer size I don't think I'll ever buy this set. :cry_sad:

Dmac's statement about shuttle:

Thanks, backbone! After watching that video, I guessed that the "Polish friend" was Dmac. In the video, Misterzumbi (I'm presuming he's the guy in the video) said that the shuttle was 65% his own original design and 35% Dmac's. It's nice that a LEGO designer would give official confirmation and recognition that he had help from an AFOL.

Oh, and now I finally know who designed the Hyperspeed Pursuit set in Space Police! The license plate on the skull interceptor reads "ZUMBI", and the designer said he worked on Space Police a bit. :sweet:

I'm eagerly awaiting a review of this set!

EDIT: Thanks, grogall, for the high-resolution pictures!

I think the set is beautiful. And even though it meets the 10 cents per piece ratio, I think it will be a hard sell to some of the casual lego people.

The Star Destroyer was $300 when it came out, Millennium Falcon was $500.

Those are two ships are icons of the Star Wars franchise which to a degree justifies the price. And while I will be definitely be buying the shuttle, I don't think it has the same iconic status. So we'll see how it goes I guess.

So this is £260 but the at-at is £90? Lol THREE AT AT's or this? Hmm, same number of bricks but 19 extra minifigs and enough imperial tech for one hell if a diorama! Got 3 at at's already, I do love em.

New one where the head doesn't fall off = score!

Thanks for the confirmation (I suspected as much). If your shuttle is recycled then take heart knowing TLC is unlikely to release an AT-AT to rival yours. I think it will serve you as a fine dinner table for a long time to come yet! :sweet:

I'm happy for the dual wing mechanism to serve a pragmatic reason such as durability. The fact that the knobs are removable is also a nice touch (I know its Lego and its all removable but you know what I mean). I suspect the mechanism is also lockable, at least referring to the knobs as 'keys' seems to suggest the notion of a 'lock' strongly.

[snip]

The lack of a ramp is understandable given the design brief probably required four minifigs to fit in the cockpit. If you look closely at the side of the shuttles 'neck' you'll notice its a little thicker than the corresponding ILM reference material (by about a brick's width). This distortion in detail looks to be a sacrifice in accuracy for the sake of the figures inside. When you think about it that's the first time a UCS has forgone looks for the inclusion of a minifig.

It also means you don't get a functional ramp!

On this model you'd require an opening under the neck right where the rear seats are for the ramp to look and work realistically. Given the marketability of minifigs then the choice becomes clear when you have the following options to choose from - have 4 minis seated or settle with just two and include a boarding ramp. Its the age old Lego division- expect external accuracy or demand internal features for minifigs. What we have here is a compromise which can't satisfy everyone but its less of a glaring compromise than including a decorative ramp leading up to a dead end.

In my own design brief I'd have dumped the figures, lost the bulk in the neck and required a functional ramp. A UCS doesn't need figures nor a consistent scale between similar models for them to be beautiful decorative sculptures. That being said I don't begrudge a collectors love for minifigs nor the inclusion of the little guys in this set. It may have resulted in some design compromises but its slight and it makes more AFOL happy to have them present.

And lets face it, despite the odd missing feature or niggling inaccuracy what we have left is simply an epic UCS...

They could've had 4 seats and a ramp both Dmac's and mine do, the body has plenty of room inside without the landing gear in the way so an interior could easily fit, it's like a tardis in there!

Oh this is just absurd

did they just keep going till they designed something no one could actually display?

Less concerned about the price than the room I'd need to leave aside to store it in.

Is it actually practical to even lift this thing?

Well done Lego, you've made a set for only the people in this thread...

Ohh wow nice one lego

i think that the History with dmac is very funny.

It is nice too see the wings are folding all the way down and up !!

and ohh yes the cockpit got 4 seats Yes very nice... ohhh wait! Were dos the Stormie gos?????-_-

I for one are looking forward to potenial fan mods to this Shuttle set. I'm sure TLG did everything they could, but it's usually possible to squeeze a bit more out of every TLG design. So, what do we have on the list: Ramp, Built-in retractable landing gear, single-winch wing mechanism, motorized wings....

And then off course we're all looking forward to see the Shuttle placed in Mortens Death Star Hangar MOC, which naturally has to be expanded and updated to handle the beast

I agree, The possibilities for MODs on this thing are incredible. If someone can figure out how to blow smoke up with the MODed landing ramp lower, that would be awesome!
